Sports Connection especially seeks to ensure that young women and financially disadvantaged young men and women are an integral part of the activities provided by Sports Connection. Volunteers are Critical to Sports ConnectionDuring the past three years more than fifty volunteers worked with the sports program offered at the sports facility located at 5600 St. Charles Avenue. Most of the volunteers served as coaches or assistant coaches for T-ball, softball, baseball, and soccer teams of all ages. These volunteers included parents, college students, and a variety of other individuals who enjoy sports or working with young people. The Sports Connection staff is trying to update the contact information for all volunteers who have worked with previous teams. If you have volunteered to work with a team at the sports facility, please check the list available in the Sports Connection office and make sure that your address, telephone and fax numbers, and your e-mail address are correct. The enhancements to the Sports Connection Park and to the facilities make a much larger offering of sports activities possible. The addition of lights and the upgrades of the playing make it possible to schedule more activities per hour and to extend the hours available significantly. The swimming pool and tennis court upgrades make those facilities among the best in the city, and the usage increase dramatically. New facilities, including a driving range and practice putting green, a fitness facility, and an area for aerobics and other activities, make it possible to offer a whole range of new activities for both women and men is volunteer coaches are available to work these programs.If you have or if you know of anyone who has an interest in any of the sports activities described in this article, please call the Sports Connection office and provide the contact information. Both male and female volunteers are needed in virtually every sport offered by Sports Connection. Several coaches from the local colleges have agreed to spend a limited number of hours working with the volunteers in the various sports. Corporate Sponsorships and Leverage GrantsThe generous grant through the Community Foundation to the Sports Connection make it possible to convert an existing park and sports facility into outstanding facilities that will serve the youth of the city for many years to come. A key to the success of Sports Connection however, is the ability to work with the corporate leadership of the city to leverage that grant so that mane more of the city’s young people can participate in the activities offered.901700302260Corporate All Starts00Corporate All StartsThe Advisory Council created a program called the Corporate All Starts to provide a way to recognize the many business establishments of the community that are an integral part of the Sports Connection program. Companies choose from a wide range of options in which they would like to participate in Sports Connection activities.One of the more popular options is team sponsorship. The company provides uniforms for all members of a team. The company may include its name and logo on the uniforms provided. Another popular option involves sponsoring individuals to present seminars or special clinics. Several companies have agreed to sponsor an Olympic medal winner to work with the young people. Others indicated they would sponsor individuals with expertise in area such as nutrition and eating disorders, prevention of drug and alcohol abuse, and performance enhancement. Some companies agreed to provide one or more employees with three hours per week of released time from their company duties to serve as volunteers to work with various activities at Sports Connection. These employees assist in a variety of area such as promoting Sports Connection activities, assisting in the office, managing competition, working with coaches, and providing health services.Role of the advisory Clinic The Sports Connection Advisory Council is the governing board charged with ensuring that all Sports Connection expenditure meet the criteria established by the donor who provided the endowment for the facility. Why Should You Participate in Sports?At Sports Connection we strive to include every type of athlete from the beginners to the advanced in a variety of sports teams we offer. We believe that sports are for everyone, not just the super athlete. Sports are for both male and female, young and old, and everyone in between. Sports Connection offers sports teams with varying age ranges, all female teams, all male teams, as well as coed teams. With the variety of sports offered you are sure to find just the right sport for you. Sports are fun and are a great way to make new friends. By joining a sports team you are creating a connection with your team mates that go beyond the playing field. An excellent advantage to playing sports is that they promote fitness. While practicing and playing sports you are increasing your cardio, this type of exercise is a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy. Most importantly, and the mission of Sports Connection is to give youth a chance to build critical life and career skills. By participating in team sports athletes can learn to work as a team, give and take direction as well as learn to motivate others. Sports also offer a fun and exciting environment in which to learn how to handle both failure and success. All of the major construction work has been completed, and the final inspection is scheduled for April 4. The Grand Opening Committee encourages you and your family and friends to be part of the Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, April 15. The dedication ceremony begins at 10:00 in the morning with the Mayor declaring April 15 as Sports Connection Day and the Community Foundation President presenting the key to the Sports Connection facility to us. At the conclusion of the program, the official party will lead the tour of the facilities. Our volunteers will be available to conduct tours throughout the afternoon. A number of exhibitions featuring several coaches from Central University, some of our volunteer coaches, and some of the participants are scheduled as part of the tour. The picnic lunch will be served in the recreations area beginning at 4:00. The gymnasium has been designed as the alternate site in the event of rain. Many of our corporate sponsors generously contributed to the luncheon and also donated prizes that will be given throughout the event.Some Sports Connection activities have already begun, others will begin after the final inspection of the facilities. A complete schedule of the activities that are now available is posted at the Sports Connection office. Participants are encouraged to sign up early. As events fill, new ones will be opened as long as volunteer coaches and facilities are available. Forms are available for users to suggest additional activities that would be of interest.
