GRAMMAR REVIEW: SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

|Directions: The rules for SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT are listed below. Underneath the rules are SIX sentences that have subject-verb agreement errors. For |

|each sentence, correct the error AND next to each sentence write down the RULE NUMBER that supports your correction. |

|Rule 1: |A singular (one) subject will always take a singular verb. Singular verbs usually end with an “s.” |

| |Example: The boy IS happy. |

| | |

| |A plural (more than one) subject will always take a plural verb. Plural verbs usually DO NOT end with an “s.” Example: The boys ARE happy. |

|Rule 2: |When two subjects or more (compound subject) are separated by the word “or”, you will look at the subject closest to the verb. If this |

| |subject is singular, you will use the singular verb tense. If this subject is plural, you will use the plural verb tense. |

|Rule 3: |When “neither” and “either” are the subjects, they always take singular verbs. Look at this example: Either of us can go. In this sentence, |

| |“either” is the subject, so the verb is singular. |

| | |

| |Remember: The subject of the sentence will not follow the word “of.” |

|Rule 4: |When two subjects are separated by the word “and”, the verb tense will always be plural. (Even if the subjects are both singular) The reason |

| |for this is the word “and” joins two things together. (In contrast, the word “or” separates two things and leaves each one standing alone. |

|Rule 5: |The pronouns “each, every, every one, everybody, anyone, anybody, someone, somebody” are all considered singular and require a singular verb. |

| |RULE: |

|Each of the soldiers were given body armor to wear in case of an attack from the enemy. | |

| | |

|Many people enjoys going to the beach for summer vacation. |RULE: |

|Neither the parents nor the child enjoy amusement parks. |RULE: |
