Regression Line Equation - University of Louisiana at Monroe
Regression Line Equation
Suppose we are given the following paired data:
x
1
2 4
5
y
6
8 10 10
We have already seen how to enter this data into the TI-30XII calculator.
Remember to clear out any previous data ("CLRDATA") and make sure the calculator is in "2-VAR" mode.
Once the data is entered, press the "STATVAR" button (1) and scroll through to find the linear correlation coefficient, "r" (2). As we have seen before, the value is 0.953 (3) which indicates there is a strong linear correlation.
We would now like to determine the equation of the regression line and the calculator makes this very easy. The "a" value of 1 (1) is the slope and the "b" value of 5.5 (2) is the y-intercept.
So, the equation of the regression line is = + . [that is, = + ].
