Plantar  Fasciitis

 What is it?

Plantar Fasciitis refers to an inflammation of the plantar fascia - a ligament which runs from the heel to each of the five toes.

It Hurts Where?

Pain will usually occur most intensely on the bottom of the heel.  However, because the fascia runs along the length of the foot it is possible for pain to occur anywhere along the sole of the foot.

Similar Injuries:

Any athlete with plantar fasciitis should be monitored for heel spurs and/ or a stress fracture of the metatarsals.  If the injury does not improve with 3-4 weeks of rehab, then referral to an orthopedist or podiatrist should be considered.

How does it Happen?

This fascia may become inflamed and eventually even tear if there is sufficient pressure exerted on the bottom of the foot.  This pressure may be the result of a sudden turn or landing that causes the arch to flatten or the toes to spread.  In most cases, however, plantar fasciitis develops over a period of time.  Some athletes are predisposed to this condition because of "pronating" feet.  This means the feet flatten and roll inward while walking or running.  Since the arch drops this causes added  tension on the plantar fascia.  This particular problem is easily addresses with an orthotic that is placed in the shoe to mechanically support the arch and keep the arch ligament from straining.

Treatment:

Part of the treatment includes controlling the inflammation. In severe cases a doctor may recommend a cortisone injection or oral anti-inflammatory medication. Icing the area at the end of the day and more often if able will be very beneficial. If rehabilitation has been recommended by the doctor, the physical therapist or athletic trainer may choose different modalities such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, or iontophoresis to address pain relief as well control of the inflammatory process.

You may also be advised to use a night splint.  Many people report that the most painful time is when they put their foot on the ground in the morning.  This is because the toes have been in a "down" position through the entire night which allows the plantar fascia to shorten.  Placing the foot on the ground causes an immediate stretch of this already tender and inflamed area.  The brace (or night splint) will place a comfortable but continuous stretch on the plantar fascia throughout the night, resulting in significant reduction of pain in the morning. A stretching and strengthening routine for the calf muscle group and intrinsic muscles of the foot is always essential to successful treatment.

Participation Status:

Return to "normal" activity will largely depend on the pain level.  An athlete should not return to running or jumping until she/he can manage standing and walking through an entire day without significant pain.   It is safe to say that if walking causes pain it will become worse with these activities and cause additional damage.  Be sure to ice after the first few times you try returning to these new activities - even if it feels good at the time.

Once it's back to normal ... the athlete should continue to use their orthotics if they were recommended, even if all symptoms resolve.  They're one of the keys to preventing re-injury as well as good footwear with shock absorption qualities.  Be sure to maintain adequate flexibility of the calf muscles and plantar fascia.  Maintaining your optimal body weight is also essential to prevent additional stress on the plantar fascia.  Try to intersperse prolonged periods of standing and walking with periods of non-weight bearing.  Return to the exercise routine and icing frequently if you feel the symptoms returning, but that won't happen in most cases if you've taken all the right steps.

The Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots head into the final week of the regular season with a 22-3 record. The Lady Patriots have won nine consecutive games with regular season games remaining this week against Warren Central and Russell County.

Perhaps the season’s biggest win to date came on February 1st as AC-S defeated Monroe County, 54-50. The win assured the Lady Patriots the top seed in the district tournament next week. In the game, the Lady Patriots built a 17-point first half lead before facing a furious Monroe County rally in the final half. However, a clutch three from Morgan Rich and a textbook defensive stop by Savannah Gregory enabled AC-S to post the win. Rich led the way with 21 points while Gregory led in rebounding with eight.

Additional wins in the past 15 days have come against Butler County (52-32), Greenwood (69-36), Franklin-Simpson (49-310 and Clinton County (35-29). The win over Greenwood on Tuesday, February 5th nearly featured three players with double-doubles. Rich and Holly Robinson each scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Gregory led all scorers with 19 points and finished with nine rebounds---one shy of her own double-double.

Last Saturday, AC-S survived an upset bid at Clinton County. Cold shooting for AC-S (just under 28 percent from the floor) made for a long night. However, in the end, a clutch jumper from Rich and a defensive stop enabled the Lady Patriots to avoid the loss.

This week’s games will not be easy. Warren Central (13-14) is an athletic team that has pushed Bowling Green in two narrow losses this year. Russell County (19-4) is an up-and-coming team whose only losses have come to Bowling Green (75-63), Monroe County (63-54), Glasgow (56-50) and Adair County (59-48).

The Lady Patriots will then enter district tournament play next Tuesday against Barren County. The Trojanettes have struggled this year but AC-S coach brad Bonds knows not to take the team lightly.

“John Butler (Barren’s coach) will have his team ready to play.” Coach bonds said.

The wins in the past week have also brought Coach Bonds to a personal milestone. AC-S’s win over Monroe County was also Bonds’ 100th win as basketball coach. He is in his sixth year of coaching.

State Bound

Freshman Savannah Gregory is averaging 10.1 points and 6.4 rebounds a game this year. Gregory’s season high in points was 23 at Butler County in January.

The Allen County-Scottsville Patriots carry a 14-12 record into the final week of the regular season---a week that will see the Patriots on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway twice. Monday, AC-S travels to Adair County and Friday, the Patriots end the regular season as regional power Russell County. Sandwiched between the road games will be Tuesday’s home tilt with Warren Central.

The Patriots have dropped three of their last five games. After downing hart County (72-62) on January 29th---a game in which junior Jared Walden matched a career high with 26 points----the Patriots dropped a 63-55 decision to Monroe County on February 1st at Patriot Gym.

The loss to the Falcons gave Monroe County the second seed in the district. AC-S fell to 2-4 in district play and in a tie (record-wise) with Glasgow. Since AC-S had two wins over the Scotties, the Patriots will be the third seed in the district next week and face Monroe County in a rematch.

A night after losing to Monroe, the Patriots bounced back with a 66-58 win over Todd Central. Austin Napier matched a career high with 15 points. Dyllan Harper added 15 points and led AC-S with nine rebounds.

Last week, AC-S lost to Greenwood 60-48 on Tuesday but bounced back Thursday to upset Clinton County, 60-51. The Patriots were led by Harper and Matthew Holder as each scored 16 points. Walden added 15 in the win.

The win at Clinton County was followed by a disappointing 61-51 loss Friday night at Franklin-Simpson. Holder led the Patriots with 13 points while Harper led in rebounds with eight.

The Patriots will face the Monroe County Falcons in district tournament play Monday night at 7:45 at Barren County High School.

The Allen County-Scottsville swim team will have a swimmer in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state championships later this month in Louisville. During last weekend’s Region One Swim Championships in Owensboro, senior Travis Durocher placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 55.58, a time which earns him the opportunity to swim in the state championships.

“Travis once again broke his own backstroke record in the preliminaries Friday with a time of 59.55 qualifying him for Saturday’s finals,” added Swim Coach Janice Bloink. “Travis is presently ranked 27th in the state in the butterfly.”

Other Patriot swimmers had strong showings at the region meet with several qualifying in preliminary rounds on Friday for the regional finals Saturday.

“Vanessa Durocher shattered a long-standing 100 freestyle school record by posting a 59.75 qualifying her for finals on Saturday,” Bloink said. “She finished 14th in the region. Also qualifying for regional finals were the medley relay teams of Kristine Gillenwater, Abby Mysinger, Vanessa Durocher and Lindsey Blair on the girls side and Michael Mason, Seth Jones, Travis Durocher and Aaron Holder in the boys medley. The girls finished 11th overall dropping almost three seconds to come within point-five seconds of the school record. The boys finished in 12th place dropping almost four seconds in their time.”

The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Lindsey Blair, Abby Mysinger, Riley Wade and Vanessa Durocher also qualified for the regional finals finishing 16th with a best time of 1:59.63. The 400 freestyle relay team of Lindsey Blair, Hannah Salman, Kristine Gillenwater and Vanessa Durocher reach the finals, finishing 15th and also posting a best time of 4:30.98. Plans have been finalized for the 15th District Basketball Tournament scheduled to start Monday, February 18th at Barren County High School in Glasgow.

Boys action starts the four-day event. The opening game at 6 p.m. on February 18th will have top-seed Barren County (current record 19-5) facing four-seed Glasgow (10-10). Second-seed Monroe County (14-9) and third-seed Allen County-Scottsville (14-12) play at 7:45. The winners will meet in a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday, February 21st.

The Patriots will be looking to defeat the Falcons for the first time this season. On January 4th in Tompkinsville, Monroe County defeated AC-S 62-48. On February 1st in Scottsville, Monroe County upended AC-S a second time, 63-55.

AC-S will be looking for their first opening round district tournament win since defeating Glasgow 63-61 in overtime in 2010. Last year, AC-S lost to Barren County, 53-52, in overtime. Two years ago, Monroe County defeated AC-S 85-78 in an epic five overtime battle.

Girls action starts on Tuesday, February 19th as one-seed Allen County-Scottsville (22-3) faces four-seed Barren County (5-16) in the 6 p.m. opener. At 7:45, second-seed Glasgow (17-5) battles third-seed Monroe County (18-5). The girls championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, February 22nd.

The Lady Patriots will be looking to defeat the Trojanettes for a third time this season. In December, AC-S downed Barren County 59-31 and the Lady Patriots upended the Trojanettes 60-30 on January 18th. AC-S is looking for their first district tournament win since defeating Monroe County in 2009.

Tickets to each session will be $5 and may be purchased in advance or at the door. More information on advanced tickets sales will be forthcoming from Allen County-Scottsville High School.
