***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

Maeve is in the Ryan parlor mending when Frank, assisted only by a cane now enters and she greets him. He has been at the city council and he stood while taking the pledge. There are three newcomers including him. He found his office in the basement and Maeve likens his tale as that of his first day at school. She hopes Mary’s first day on the job was as enjoyable. They speculate that the workday doesn’t end at Channel R. Frank notices that Maeve is altering LJ’s jumper as he grows. Frank asks where Dee is. Maeve skips over this question telling how a friend of John’s came over met LJ and the three had much fun. Dee has spent the day in bed and Frank believes they should move back to their place. Maeve tells him the problems will be there no matter where they live. She then reminisces to when Bob brought Dee as a child to Ryan’s. She felt sorry for her then and still does. Frank speculates that she is still a lost child. Maeve tells him he still misses Jill but Frank maintains he will continue to try with Dee. She sends Frank in to see Dee.

Mary is holding cue cards as Sam does a newscast on an historic house saved from demolition. She also finds time to move the tv camera around and just generally takes over. The show ends and they all continue to rave about how well she is doing. Sam brings up the sewage treatment plant and Jack enters. Sam’s trying to talk business but Jack distracts her with promises of dinner and basketball tickets. Sam wants to introduce Mary to Channel R’s “overtime policy” but Jack maintains she has put in a full day already. Sam reluctantly relents; they can talk sewage all day tomorrow. Mary and Jack head out.

Frank enters the bedroom and Dee is curled up on the ubiquitous green blanket. He apologizes to her but her arm still hurts. She brings up that he told her she was an awful person and that made it impossible for her to even look at LJ today. He tells her they both said hurtful things to each other and they have to keep trying. She insists that she has been trying but he continues to hate her. He contradicts this and tells her he needs her to which she responds warmly. They embrace and she questions him about his ability to make her happy. She wants to feel safe and warm. She worries that he still feels that she is smothering him and he tells her not to worry about it. They agree that this could be a start. She now wants to hear all about his first day at the council. She vows to be as perfect as she can be and he tells her to take one day at a time. She then brings up the possibility of having another baby.

Mary and Jack enter Ryan’s debating whether she should have left Channel R when she did. Johnny is at the bar and when Mary refers to “hogging the covers tonight” he is affected. John asks about Mary’s day and actually offers a handshake to Jack. He again asks about her first day on the job but they have tickets to the basketball game. She has stopped by to get her camera to bring to work the next day and John deduces that Mary is going to spend the night at Jack’s. She talks about how hectic her day was and that Sam wanted her to work overtime on her first day. Jack speculates that work wasn’t the one thing on Sam’s mind then excuses himself to call his editor. Alone, John asks Mary how long she is going to keep “carrying on” with Fennelli. He wants to know how this is going to end with him not wanting to marry her. She is only hoping to have a wonderful time for as long as it lasts. He doesn’t want to see her hurt but she tells him she is having a warm, wonderful time.

Frank is concerned that when they made love on New Years that Dee didn’t prevent pregnancy. She denies it but still thinks LJ deserves a little sister. Frank believes another baby is the last thing they need citing Dee’s inability to take care of LJ today. She takes this as a refusal of love and wonders how sincere his moments of tenderness were. She challenges that his mother told him to come in and pat her on the head. He tells her how lucky she is that Maeve is on her side. At this, Dee speculates that Frank only wants children with Jill. “Good God, what do you want from me?” he asks her. She wants everything he gave Jill and then some. She deserves that and everyone knows that. He goes to leave and she begs him not to but to no avail. She collapses crying on the bed and Maeve enters. It’s no use she tells Maeve and speculates Frank went to Jill’s which Maeve denies. The next shot is Frank ringing Jill’s apartment doorbell.

January 15, 1976 Monday, February 7, 2011 2nd Episode

Jill is surprised to see Frank and hesitates before letting him in.  Faith expresses to Ed the need for tranquility and peace and says that she wants to take Pat to the beach house.  In her excitement she has a warm conversation with Kenneth and shares with him about the teacup that Maeve gave to her.  This leads him to make a decision.  Jill refuses to resume her relationship with Frank – although she wants one more than anything.  Frank returns home and sadly vows to Delia to try and mend their differences.  Kenneth breaks into the Coleridge home and finds the teacup.  Faith convinces Clem to give her and Pat the same time off.  Faith arrives home and realizes that someone is there when she is attacked from behind.

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

Continue of previous arc with Frank ringing the doorbell marked “J Coleridge”. She opens the door and says hello. She’s glad to see him and is surprised. He tells her things are not going too well and wants fifteen minutes. She doesn’t think it’s a good idea but lets him come in.

Faith is looking speculative in the lounge as Ed enters looking for notes for a seminar. He notices she is upset and asks what’s wrong. She tells him she is upset about her stalker and he finally shows some parental concern. The police can’t do anything as no crime has been committed but he warns her to be careful. She also admits things are not going that well with Pat and he tells her to get some rest. She tells him about a plan to go to the beach house, rest, and eat carbohydrates. He doesn’t want her to go alone so she wants to ask Pat. Kenneth enters and greets both Dr. Coleridge’s. Ed excuses himself and asks her to save some dinner for him and exits after kissing his daughter on the mouth. Faith then shares with Kenneth her desire to go to the beach house which is an hour away. He tells her it’s too bad she has to go so far away to feel safe. She extols wicker furniture as providing creature comfort and he tells her of a smooth stone that brought him comfort when his father would start yelling at this mother. Rather than being totally creeped out Faith tells him she thinks he still has that stone. She also tells him of being in the Ryan kitchen and drinking from Maeve’s “surprise teacup”. She now has it on her own kitchen shelf. Clem enters and greets Castle and Faith. Kenneth leaves and Faith asks Clem for the intern schedule. He happens to have it fresh off the mimeograph!

Kenneth is picking up a set of keys.

Frank is talking to Jill and grabs her and kisses her. She breaks away and tells him how much she misses him. But being together is all wrong. He can’t leave Dee now or in the future. He tells her he doesn’t love Dee but he loves Jill. He’s miserable without her. She will not go back to him now no matter what she wants. He tells her he’s been trying to work things out with Delia but she does not want to hear about that. It’s not what he wants but she tells him it is what he decided. It’s been sheer hell for her but he has to accept it. “We can’t start seeing each other again?” he asks. No because he’s not going to leave his child, his wife, or his career. She doesn’t regret it and she’s not angry but it’s over. She tells him to go home and not do this again. He leaves.

Frank re-enters his and Dee’s bedroom a broken man. She apologizes to him for thinking about having a baby and for spoiling their moment together. She helps him with his jacket and tells him she wants to make him happy. He admits to wanting to make her happy too which thrills her. She offers to make him dinner which he says is too much trouble. He’s too tired to even think about eating and she wonders where he was all this time. He maintains that he was just walking and it was a long day for him. He tells her they will make a fresh start tomorrow but she looks doubtful.

Kenneth enters the Coleridge kitchen and looks in refrigerator. He finds the surprise teacup and saucer. Faith meanwhile is trying to get Clem to change the intern schedule so she and Pat can have some time off together. Clem is wondering what has gotten Faith to change (he lived with the Coleridges for three years) into a non-studious and now fun-loving person. He does change the schedule to her wishes.

Kenneth is wrapping up the teacup when the doorbell rings. It startles him and a nearby glass breaks into pieces as he darts into a closet. Faith enters the kitchen with groceries, wondering why the lights are on and sees the broken glass, speculating the housekeeper left it. As she cleans it up Kenneth shuts off the kitchen light and grabs her from behind.

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

In the Coleridge kitchen, Ken has just grabbed Faith and is holding his hand over her mouth to keep her quiet. He hisses at her that he didn't expect her to come home and that he does not intend to hurt her. He apologizes for frightening her, repeating that he didn't expect her home so soon. They struggle some more, then he throws her down, saying he has to get out of there, which he does. Faith is left gasping for air and desperately calling for help. *SONG*

At the hospital, the crew is wheeling in a "Mrs. Monroe". Clem tells them to take her down to room 614 (Was that Frank's old room or was it Nick's?). After they've taken Mrs. Monroe away, Pat emerges and tells Clem that he's gotten to the point where he can't bear to see a new patient come in.

Clem explains what happened - how Mrs. M fell down some stairs at the nursing home - and explains that the prognosis is not good. Clem leaves Pat in charge of the new patient. Pat enters her room and they chat. Mrs. M thinks that Pat is her grandson (Tony). She is confused and talks about various unrelated topics. But eventually, the discussion turns to the topic of conditions at the nursing home, which are pretty bad; the people who run it don't care about the resident's needs.

Back at the Coleridge's, Faith is screaming for help. After a bit, Roger arrives and asks what happened. Faith explains, but she doesn't know who it was that attacked her. Roger runs off to investigate, but (of course) doesn't find anything. Faith continues to scream hysterically until Roger grabs her and shakes her, yelling at her to calm down. Dr. Roger prescribes a drink, which he prepares and administers. As Faith calms down a bit, Rog calls the police.

At the hospital, Kenny is re-buttoning his lab coat. He goes up to where Pat is standing and greets him in his usual smarmy fashion. He tells Pat that he looks like he is having a "rough day". Pat agrees, and Ken says "Me, too. I've been slaving away in the lab all evening." He then prattles on in the same vein to the nurse, going on about how busy they all are. Pat agrees and then excuses himself.

At the bar, Johnny is entertaining a group of customers with his usual blarney. Nick enters and catches Johnny's eye, spoiling the happy mood. Nick goes up to the bar, where he is joined by Johnny. They need to talk.

Nick opens his spiel by saying that he's always liked Johnny and that he hopes they can still be friends (Ed: Yet another form of JBF'ing - there's a lot of that on this show...), but Johnny interrupts and says words to the effect of "not after what you did to my son! (and the rest of the family)". Nick insists that that was all "strictly business", and not intended to be taken in any other way (Ed: yeah, right...).

Nick continues to bluster about how business is business and how Frank has caused him a lot of problems in his business (with all the summonses and the fact that he lost the hospital deal). As Nick continues to kvetch, Johnny asks him if he expects him to cry some tears for him. Nick says no, but he wants Johnny to see that Nick and Frank are about the same; in fact, Frank is still on the council, so actually, he comes out ahead.

Nick asserts that it does make him happy to know that the son of his old friend Johnny Ryan is on the council, but Johnny isn't buying his BS. Johnny tells him that they used to always hear stories around the neighborhood about Nick, but they never paid them much attention; they always assumed they were just that - stories. Nick assures him that that's all they are. Just then, one of the customers calls out to Johnny for another round of drinks. He attends to preparing the drinks.

Nick tells him that he wants their friendship to go back to what it was, but Johnny piously tells him he doesn't think that is possible, because what hurts Frank, hurts him. And none of Nick's money or influence can change that. Nick then re-iterates old events - the story about him cosigning the loan on the bar and then Maeve getting Serena into the special school, etc.

Nick wants Johnny to realize that there is a lot more to their friendship than what has happened in the past few months. But again, Johnny isn't having any. Johnny ends up telling him that they can't be friends any more, and Nick philosophically says "If that's the way it has to be, ..."; J says yes, that is how it has to be. Nick grabs his coat and hat and leaves the bar.

At the hospital, Pat is attending to Mrs. M. She is getting ready to leave for surgery, but she wants Pat to do it. Pat explains that he is only an intern, so he does not do surgery. Dr. Moultrie does - and he is very good at it. She wants to be sure that he will be back here waiting for her when she comes back from surgery; he assures her that he will be. The nurse and the orderlies come in and wheel her away.

Roger and Faith come in off the elevator, still discussing the recent incident and talking about getting the locks changed. The orderlies yell out to them to hold the elevator, which they do, and they wheel Mrs. M onto the elevator, as Pat looks on wistfully. Once again, good ole Ken is there and he greets Dr. Coleridge as he always does. Faith asks how he is, and he says he is fine - a little tired maybe - but that exhaustion from a lot of hard work feels good. He excuses himself and leaves.

Faith goes over to talk to Pat, and tells him about the break-in. She is pretty sure that it is "her friend" (but of course, she has no clue that she was just this minute making small talk with said "friend"). She then tells Pat the whole story - all the while, good ole Ken is watching & listening attentively.

Eventually, Faith tells Pat that what she really wants is to get in the car and drive out to the beach house (tomorrow). She asks him to come with her, but he protests that he is on duty that day. She explains that he is not on duty - she had the schedule changed. Shocked, Pat tells her that she should have consulted with him before doing that. She says that she thought it would be a nice surprise for him, but he tactfully declines the offer, saying that he needs to be here for his new patient, Mrs. M. He then explains the situation with Mrs. M.

Faith suggests that it will be OK - that Mrs. M's problems won't interfere with their glorious time at the BH. She whimpers and whines and begs him to come with her, but he coldly maintains that he cannot do so. When she tells him how nice Clem was to change the schedule for her, he tells her that his schedule is his schedule and she should not interfere with it. She apologizes (for changing the schedule). He apologizes (for that awful thing happening to her).

Pat then tells her that he thinks it would be a nice idea if she got away by herself for awhile. He walks away, she calls out after him, but he just tells her to have a nice time. Meanwhile, Ken continues to watch...

January 19, 1976 Tuesday, February 8, 2011 2nd Episode

Pat continues to cool things off with Faith.  Later, he goes through extraordinary means for Miss Monroe, which concerns Nell.  Sam is clearly disappointed when Mary sets him straight about Jack.  Faith refuses Jill’s advice when she tells her to let Pat make the next move.  Pat is shaken when Mrs. Monroe dies in his arms.  Nell and Mary try to comfort Pat who feels he should have done more to help his patient live.  Faith tries to reestablish her relationship with Pat and is upset when he breaks things off with her.

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

Open on Pat, on the phone talking to Mr. Monroe (Mrs. M's son). Pat emphatically tells him that he should speak to the owners of the nursing home, because he doesn't think they were sufficiently concerned (with his mother's well-being). They (Pat & Mr. M) argue over the phone as Faith wanders in and takes note. Eventually, Pat hangs up in disgust; Faith inquires and he explains the situation - including that the son is out in Colorado and not about to come east to help his mother. He asks how she is and she seems better (pretty good, in fact, considering what she's been through).

She says that she had a lot of trouble getting to sleep last night, and that she keeps expecting her "friend" to materialize out of the closet. Pat sympathizes with her plight, saying that it must be tough to live with the fear. They then talk about the upcoming visit from the police (specifically, Bob) and how they are going to see if they can get some police protection for her at the hospital. He asks if they got the locks changed and she says yes and shows him the new keys.

Next, Nell comes in from the elevator and greets Pat. Pat had arranged to have her take some more pictures of Mrs. M; she apologizes for the delay, citing a session she just completed with "a very active 2 year old". Pat and Nell proceed to talk shop, ignoring Faith, and generally making her feel abandoned in her desires for a romantic getaway.

Pat/Nell arrive in Mrs. M's room and continue to talk shop. Pat wants her to do a set of chest X-rays to confirm his diagnosis of pneumonia. Nell agrees, but questions his motives, pointing out that if the diagnosis comes back positive, well, there's isn't much they can do about it. Further, she says (no doubt thinking of her own prognosis) that if she were Mrs. M, she'd welcome pneumonia. Pat is shocked at this lapse in her professional ethic. He reminds her that keeping people alive is what they (doctors) are there for.

*SONG* (with announcement that the part of Mary Ryan will be played by Carol Richards)

Mary arrives at Sam's office and asks how Channel R's star reporter is feeling today. She offers him coffee, which he gladly accepts. They make small talk, which leads up to Sam telling her about his long night the night before and that he is now one of the foremost experts on the city's sewer system. Mary starts yammering about all the work involved and how she doesn't see how she'll ever be able to get caught up; Sam coldly reminds her of Channel R's unpaid overtime policy.

Catching Sam's meaning, she agrees to stay late tonight and get it all done. After some more banter, Sam informs her that what he'd really like to do is to reserve a few nights of her time - for the rest of her life! Giggling at this, she agrees to take it all home with her and work on it there. Sam then asks if she would, for business purposes only of course, clarify for him her relationship with Jack - mentioning, incidentally, that the first time he saw him, he thought he was her uncle or something...

Mary clarifies, identifying Jack as her "friend" and, also, as the man that she happens to be in love with. Sam then wants to know where he should call if he needs to contact her late at night; Mary replies that she is not "living with" Jack (yet), but smirks that she does spend time at his place now and then. Getting up, Sam concedes that Jack is a very lucky guy. Mary cautions Sam that Jack is going to be around the station from time to time, picking her up and such, and that he is not a very tactful person. He is honest and you can rely on what he says, but he can be very direct.

She then explains Jack's childhood and background - how it led to his being the way he is. After her long spiel on the subject, Sam crisply informs her that he is "sorry". "Sorry about what?" she inquires, to which he simply says that he is sorry that he (Jack) met her before he (Sam) did. She is suitably amused at this and giggles like a schoolgirl.

Jill is in her office as Faith enters. Faith needs to talk to someone before she bursts; she goes into a routine about how she knows it is going to happen but she can't stop herself. Upon inquiry, she explains that she is talking about Pat (not the stalker/intruder; as far as she is concerned, the stalker/intruder thing is old news by now. Anyway, it is in the hands of the police). She really wants to talk about Pat, but she wants to be sure that Jill has time for it now. Jill assures her that it is OK.

Faith declares that she is messing things up with Pat. Upon inquiry, she explains about her little schedule switcheroo and how unappreciated her efforts were by Pat. All she succeeded in doing was getting Pat really, really mad at her. She explains that she knows that Pat doesn't want her hanging around his neck - that he needs to feel free and uncommitted.

She says that she thought that was what she wanted too, but now she realizes that she wants Pat "all the time" and "all to myself" - and that, yes indeedy!, what she really wants is to marry him. Shocked, Jill replies "Faith, come on. That's not very realistic!". Faith agrees that it is unrealistic, but it is what she wants. She can't help it; that's the way she feels.

She goes on to say, though, that now she'd be content if she could just make things be as good between them (her & Pat) as they once were. Jill tells her that she shouldn't play games and she shouldn't deny her feelings, but she should back off a bit and let Pat direct things for awhile. Faith rebels at this, asking if that isn't just "role playing", but Jill defends it as just being considerate, that is, giving Pat the same consideration that he gave her in the past.

Jill explains this, saying that at the start of the relationship, Pat allowed Faith to do most of the driving. Now, he's beginning to feel a little shaky and the best way to let him regain his confidence is to let him do some of the driving. Jill asks if she understands; she says sure, she understands, but she doesn't think she can do as Jill suggests.

Faith goes on to tell the story of Mrs. M, and how she actually gets jealous when Pat spends any time with her; she is actually worried that Pat may prefer to spend time with Mrs. M than with her (!). She concludes by saying that she definitely does *not* want to be "that kind of person", but she doesn't know how to stop herself.

Meanwhile, back in room 614, Nell is barking orders to someone on the phone. Concluding her phone call, Nell goes over and consoles Mrs. M, who is swathed in headdress (having just had skull surgery). Pat arrives and takes up the baton, holding Mrs. M's hand, and speaking encouraging words to her. He tells her that he talked to the son in Colorado and that he is on his way. Mrs. M brightens at the sound of his voice, but then fades away. Pat looks panicked, as he realizes that she's gone. Nell tells him that she is sorry, but for him, not for her.

At the bar, Pat is talking to Nell in a booth. He wonders if there was anything else they could have done for Mrs. M. Nell says that, in her opinion, there was not. Nell offers a word of advice: She says that there are any number of doctors who would do anything to keep a patient alive, because death is an embarrassment (Ed: Well, that is how doctors keep score, isn't it?). Nell explains that death should be a "natural and merciful release for the patient", but instead it becomes the doctor's own personal failure.

She says that it is a trap that all of us (Ed: doctors) fall into now and again. Pat demurs, saying that although he didn't like losing her, he doesn't think that's exactly it. A cheery, chirpy voice then asks "Who's lost?" The voice belongs to Mary, who has just arrived from work. Pat asks her what she is doing home at this hour, and she explains that Sam sent her home to get her camera because somebody in the sales department is using theirs.

She asks again who they lost, and Pat says that a patient of theirs died a little while ago. Mary expresses her sorrow, and Nell explains that Pat helped her a great deal. Pat says "But she died". Nell assures both of them that Pat helped her die more easily and that he should feel good about that. Mary asks what she died of; Pat says "essentially, a skull fracture", but goes on to say that he really wishes he knew the whole story behind the accident.

He asks Mary if she's ever heard of the Hillside Manor Nursing Home, then explains that Mrs. M was a patient there. He explains the rest of the family situation and that Mrs. M kept thinking that he (Pat) was her grandson. He details the delay in getting her medical attention. Nell explains that they could probably have kept her alive with machines, but that she is glad that they didn't. When pressed on this, she admits that her reaction is, of course, colored by her own situation.

After explaining her history (since she arrived at Riverside), she re-assures Pat that he did the right thing. Pat isn't so sure, but she tells him not to torture himself, saying that Mrs. M is at peace, and he should be at peace as well.

Pat enters the medicine room and finds Faith there. Faith asks him how he is; he gruffly tells her he is OK. She expresses condolences for Mrs. M; Pat says that for a while there, he really thought they were going to pull her through. Faith re-assures him that he and Clem did everything they could, then reverts to asking him again if he will come to the beach house with her. She waxes on about the fun they will have, but Pat is just not in the mood.

She continues to beg, until he finally blows up and tells her to "cut it out!". Now, unlike Dee, she does *not* fall to pieces at being yelled at; instead, she just asks what's wrong with her wanting him to come with her. Really incensed now, Pat bellows that she is "crowding" him and that she has got to stop. Getting totally ridiculous now, Faith babbles something about they don't even have to be together, they could each have two bedrooms by themselves and wouldn't have to eat together or anything - if he would just agree to go with her.

Getting totally serious, Pat closes the door and tells Faith that this isn't any good and that they have to stop. "Stop what?" she inquires, and is told that they must stop seeing each other. Things go from bad to worse. Eventually Faith screeches that he doesn't have to come to the beach house with her; she will go by herself. But the ball is in motion; Pat tells her that she is a wonderful girl but the relationship just isn't good.

***** Recap Written in 2010 *****

Faith and Ed meet with Bob and describes her incident at home. Bob questions her and Faith answers. Faith thinks the intruder has been in her house before and knows her schedule. Bob asks for an idea of who would know that. Faith doesn't think it's anyone at the hospital. Ed asks if there is any police protection but Bob says none is available. Bob tells her to stay with people and change her habits. Ed promises an escort always. Bob promises to work on it some more. Faith tells them she is off to the beachhouse to get away. She's confident no one will follow her out there despite the men's worry.

Mary and Sam are working at Channel R. Sam is having difficulty with his sewage story. Mary gives some ideas to help get his message across but Sam is less than enthused. Mary offers Bucky's houseboat to capture a shot and a river expert to add to the story. Sam agrees and then asks Mary how she can take care of all his problems with such confidence. Mary brushes him off and goes to the hospital to find Bucky.

Pat runs into Faith and they discuss a patient. Faith compliments him and Pat asks about her meeting with Bob. Faith tells him she is not supposed to be alone. Faith asks if they are still friends which Pat agrees to. Faith thinks it's because of Mrs. Monroe and asks to talk it out which Pat refuses. Faith asks him to come to the beachhouse and pleads with him to go. Pat refuses again and Faith tries to convince him. Pat starts to walk out and Faith calls out to him that she loves him with Kenneth watching near by. Pat leaves without a word. Kenneth arrives in the breakroom and makes small talk about birds. Faith remembers a canary she once had and how good she felt back then. Faith leaves as Kenneth smiles and claps his hands.

Mary finds Bucky and asks him about the houseboat and his expertise on the river. Mary pulls out a tape recorder and interviews him about the sewage treatment plant. Bucky is flustered and Mary tells him to speak from a medical perspective about the river and its effects. He does as Mary records it. Bucky is paged and Mary takes his picture before he goes. Sam arrives and offers to help. Mary plays her tape but the interview is ruined because the battery died. Mary is upset she didn't check her equipment. Sam tries to console her and Mary mentions them as a team which Sam is pleased to hear.

Faith says she need some time but she'll be okay. She tells Maeve about her plans for the beach house.

Kenneth makes a call about finding a yellow canary. He finds one and asks if the bird can survive in a room without sunlight.

***** Recap Written in 2010 *****

Ed finds Faith at the hospital and asks what's wrong. Faith tells him about Pat and their breakup. Faith blames herself and tells Ed about the warnings about Pat and his womanizing. Faith got too wrapped up and smothered him until he pulled away. Ed tells her she is overreacting. Faith thinks Pat has moved on and Ed tells her not to do anything now. Faith says she is off to the beach house which Ed agrees is a good idea. Faith thanks him and kisses him goodbye.

Kenneth is down in his basement room with a canary. He gets the bird to sing and says Faith will give the bird a name. He declares the room ready for Faith to see and imagines she'll be surprised.

Roger meets Seneca at the hospital. He tries to smooth over the 'misunderstanding' and apologizes. Seneca stands firm and says an apology changes nothing. Roger insists on making amends and Seneca asks him not to manipulate him. Roger thinks he's unfair and Seneca disagrees. As their voices raise, Nell comes by for their evening plans at Lem's. They leave as Roger complains to Ed about Seneca. Ed is thankful he is not head of the department especially with Roger's predicament. Roger asks if he would have fired him and Ed is grateful not to have been forced to make that decision. Roger complains bitterly and resolves to find a weakness in Seneca to make him change his mind. Ed warns him about going up against Seneca but Roger is determined to keep his job.

Faith calls on her car as Roger walks in. Faith finds out her car will not be ready for another half hour. Roger asks where she is off to and Faith tells him about the beach house. Roger is worried about her safety but Faith syas she'll be safer out there than here. Faith says she needs some isolation and Roger wishes her well. Roger bumps into Kenneth as he leaves and Kenneth greets Faith and asks her about her going away plans. Kenneth asks to show her something while she is waiting for her car. Faith is hesitant but Kenneth presses that he has a surprise for her. Faith thinks about it and finally agrees to go look. Kenneth grabs her suitcase for her and Kenneth hopes he hasn't built it up too much for her. Faith asks which direction and Kenneth takes her to the elevator.

Seneca and Nell are dining at Lem's and reminesce. They kiss and decide to skip dinner and go home. Nell decides they should stay and then go home. They discuss the nature of their relationship and how they fell in and out of love through the years. Seneca thinks the only couple in love at the moment is them. Nell agrees and they tease each other. Nell suddenly sees a flower boy who looks like a family member named Kevin. Seneca buys her the box of gardenias and Nell thanks him. Seneca asks what they would name a little boy if they had one and Nell says Kevin.

Kenneth brings Faith to the basement room and tells her he knows exactly where she is, the basement of the old hospital. Faith is hesitant and Kenneth tells her she is perfectly safe. He finally brings her just outside the made up room and tells her that her father is the reason he found this place. Ed encouraged Kenneth to find some old rooms that could be left standing and he did. They continue on and Kenneth brings her down a pitch dark hallway. Faith is scared and asks to go back. She demands to know what's in the room. Kenneth tells her he has found a buried treasure of old hospital records and instruments and he wants her to be the first to see it. Faith tells him not to let go of her and Kenneth readily agrees. He brings her to the door and asks her to open it telling her she'll love it. Faith presses on the door and sees the room Kenneth has re-done. She is shocked to see her picture hanging and turns back to him realizing who he is as Kenneth says 'Surprise.'

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

Faith checks out her new digs down in the secret room. Ken says he hopes she likes it, because he's been working very hard. It was worth it, though, because he was thinking of her all the time. Faith asks what it is, and is told that it is a "sanctuary" - dedicated to her. A place where she can be quiet, calm, and surrounded by the things she loves. Still more amused than panicked (as she should be, heh heh), Faith wanders over to the table and finds the "magic teacup". Seeing it, she realizes that Ken is her stalker - and the person who was in the kitchen with her the other night.

Ken states that he was very afraid that she would have recognized him - and that that would have been such a shame, because it would have ruined the surprise. He certainly didn't mean any harm and he hopes she wasn't hurt. Faith says she wasn't hurt, so Ken invites her to look around the place. He shows her the canary, but Faith thinks it is cruel to keep the bird down here with no sunlight. Ken assures her that it will be OK, citing the pet store guy. Next, he shows her the picture and explains how he made it from her ID card photo. As Ken continues to babble on about how much he loves her and thus how foolish it was for her to be afraid of him, Faith starts to get really creeped out. *SONG*

At home with Nell and Seneca, Nell is placing the gardenias all around her apartment, and complaining that she's running out of places to put them. They reminisce about their "salad days" together as residents - how they didn't have money for such extravagances back then. Nell reminds him that they did have money (because she has family money) - but Seneca says that doesn't count - as far as he was concerned, they lived on their salaries, which were minimal. Nell questions this - why they couldn't have used her inherited money - Seneca says he didn't want anyone to think that he had married her for her it. Nell brushes this off, asking who would think that; Seneca lists off various of their relatives, all of whom might quite reasonably be concerned.

She brushes this off and asks why else. He tells her, facetiously, that if they were living on her money, then he wouldn't be able to control her (!); he goes on to say "and don't ask stupid questions!". She jokingly tells him not to get huffy; she just wasn't sure if he knew the right answer. She goes on to tell him that he will inherit the money someday, and that she wants him to do something good with it.

After that, they resume their cuddling, using the gardenias as marital aids, then start talking about the "water of the Senecas". Upon inquiry, Seneca tells a corny tale (worthy of Pat or any of the Ryans) about the animals and stuff. They then go out onto the balcony, as the love music plays.

Down in the secret room, Ken is explaining all the preparations that he's made in the lovely room. Faith listens attentively. Ken invites her to sit down and make herself comfortable - an offer which is declined. Ken assures her that there is time - that it will be another 20 minutes until her car is ready - then asks her if she is frightened. She denies this, but he then asserts that she is and that that is "awful"; there's no reason to be scared.

She goes on a bit about his having claimed that there would be medical instruments and medical records there (which there aren't); Ken defends this little deception on the grounds that he really wanted it to be a surprise. She states that it certainly was that...

She asks him why he went to such trouble. He replies that, first, because she's always been very kind to her (Ed: Has she???) and also because he has come to realize what a lovable and lovely person she is (Ed: Hmmm. He sounds like Bucky now...). She protests that he could have just told her that; he didn't need to go to all this trouble. But he says that it is much more than that; it (the room) is a refuge for her. She asks "A refuge from what?" and is told "A refuge from Dr. Ryan". Shocked, she asks what he means by that.

Ken declares that what she needs is a place to get away from Pat - a place that he doesn't know about (and can't follow her to). She's flabbergasted by this, but he goes on to say that he knows all about her and Dr. Ryan and how much he (Pat) has hurt her - and will go on hurting her, over and over again. Faith protests that this is not so - and that she and Pat are not even "going around together" anymore.

Ken maintains that, regardless of what she says, they are still involved with each other, but that they shouldn't be. He figures that if she could, from time to time, come down here, to a place that is dedicated to her, to meditate on things, she would come to see what a terrible mistake he was for her. Faith requests that they go back upstairs now, but Ken insists that she hasn't given the room a fair shake yet. She goes over to the door, but sees that it is tightly shut (no escape route there). She then asks him if he knows what this room used to be; he replies, yes, it used to be the old hospital morgue, but goes on to say that she needn't worry about that because there haven't been any bodies here for at least 50 years!

Faith tries to convince him that she appreciates all that he's done and that it was very sweet of him to go to all this trouble for her, but Ken is skeptical. He tells her that she is just saying that. He sputters that if "Dr. Ryan" had done all this for her, she'd look at everything. She protests that she thinks she *has* looked at everything. Ken then starts babbling about how when she was a little girl, she probably dreamed of having a place like this - a place to go away and hide out from the world.

She agrees that, yes, when she was 12, she put a platform in a tree. Ken picks up on this and says that this is just like that. Faith notes that this place (the room) isn't exactly like any run-of-the-mill hiding place, but Ken says that's what makes it so great. That, and the fact that nobody else (other than the 2 of them) knows about it. Faith then asks him about how he acquired all this stuff, and begins to realize that he's been stalking her for quite some time and that he took her keys and has been in her house and in her intern's quarters room, and everything.

Now (finally!) she's really getting freaked by all this. Ed: It's so good, because even as she is realizing how creepy it all is, Ken still thinks everything's fine. Ken continues to babble about how closely he's been watching her with "Dr. Ryan" and how well he understands how bad that relationship is for her. When she just doesn't seem to appreciate his concern, he tells her that she is not being at all understanding. She asks "What is there to understand?" and notes that he has been sneaking around all this time.

When she figures out that he stole the teacup, she yells at him that that was really crazy! Not liking the sound of that word, Ken loses his cool (finally!) and bellows that it isn't "crazy"!

Back with Nell/Seneca... Happily looking out their window and taking in the sights (including the WTC). Sounding like Lisa Douglas ("New York is where I'd rather stay. I get allergic smelling hay..."), Nell says that while Boston is home, NYC is where she is "alive". The two grow ever closer, as they continue to discuss their lives. Nell thanks him for coming to New York and finding her (after she had run away).

Unfortunately, Nell now gets a bad headache, and says "Now?" and calls for Seneca. Things look bad. She collapses on the floor.

In the secret room, Ken asks Faith how she could say something like that (I assume he is referring to her use of the "C word"). He tells her that she is not a cruel person, but that she knows that his mother is sick (but Faith claims she did not know it). Ken continues to creep her out. Faith begs to go back upstairs, but he still doesn't think she has given the room a fair shake. She claims that the garage that has her car is about to close, but he re-assures her that she still has another 10 minutes.

Faith again assures him that she really appreciates everything he has done for her, but he sees through her ruse. He tells her that she has no idea how horrible she is making him feel. He babbles on some more, then tells her that he did it all for her because he loves her. She yells back to not talk like that and that he does *not* love her. They proceed to argue the point, until, eventually, Faith tells him that something he said is "silly".

Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to like the sound of the "S word" any more than he liked the "C word" and questions why she used that word and why she isn't willing to give things a try. She re-assures him that she knows that he means well, but that this just isn't working for her. She then tells him that this is a "mistake", which turns out to be another word that one would be better off not using in Kenneth Castle's presence. He asserts that she would not be using that word if she would only realize and appreciate how deeply he cares about her.

Faith tells him that she has to go, but he says he doesn't want her to go. Not until she sees in the room what he sees in it. Shaking visibly, he picks up the teacup and explains how she will eventually appreciate the room like she does the flowers at the bottom of the teacup. Just then, Faith makes a run for it, opening the door and exiting the room.

Faith runs out into the darkened hallway outside the room. Not knowing her way around and with the place littered with old crud, she stumbles and falls. Panicking, Ken rushes out after her, sees her down on the floor, and yells out that she is going to blame him for what has happened to her.

(Closing credits: the secret room - note that the bird moves around) *END*

Kenneth shows Faith the room that he has dedicated to her and she realizes that he is her secret admirer.  Nell has a slight headache and refuses to spoil the romantic atmosphere between her and Seneca by relaying the news with him.  A terrified Faith tries to convince Kenneth to let her escape and fails.  Nell’s second anuerism explodes.  Faith manages to escape and hurts herself.  Kenneth carries her back into his basement room where he promises to take care of her.

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

(Continuation) Ken is trying to awaken Faith by repeatedly slapping her. As he babbles to her, asking why she did this silly thing, eventually she comes to. Saying that she has to get out of there, Faith tries to raise herself up to a standing position. But as she does so, she yells out in pain. Her leg is hurt badly; she thinks that it is broken. Ken assures her that he didn't do it and that he was taking care of her. Faith implores him to get her father, but he refuses, saying that he (Ed) would be angry at him.

She continues to beg for a doctor, but he states that she made a very foolish error in leaving the wonderful room. As a result, he will be the only one taking care of her. Again, she begs for a doctor, listing out the 3 she knows best (Ed, Roger, and Pat). Hearing the last name in this list seems to trigger another bad reaction in ole Kenny boy. He tells her that he will never let Pat get anywhere near her, not after all the pain that he has caused her. They continue to argue the point, with Ken steadfastly refusing to let anyone else know what has happened, since they would probably end up blaming him. And we can't have that, now can we? *SONG*

Nell is on the floor, barely conscious, as Seneca talks to her. Nell fades into various daydreams of her life, as Seneca gets on the phone to Riverside (desperately trying to locate Bucky). Among other things, we see (in her dreams) Bucky singing some verses of "MTA". Then we see them in the ambulance, then in the ER - all from Nell's POV.

In the hallway outside the secret room, Ken is begging Faith to stop crying. She, in turn, is still begging for a doctor, but Ken assures her that he will now be performing that function for her. She is freezing cold, so he picks her up and drags her back into the room, sitting her down on the chair. Again she begs to see a doctor; again, he refuses, telling her that *she* is a doctor, and he knows a little first aid, so they can handle it themselves. She starts to tell him that that's crazy (or something to that effect), but catches herself just in time. He asks her what she was about to say; she lies and says she doesn't know...

He then assures her that he is *not* crazy. She states that she was only going to say that it is very dangerous for them to work without X-rays. After all, it's not like they were out in the wilderness somewhere; there's a hospital just right upstairs from where they are sitting. She goes on to say that she can't doctor herself; that'd be really silly. Oops, there she goes again with the "S word". Ken picks up on this and asks her why she thinks he is silly. She denies that she thinks that.

Noting that she laughed at him just before she ran out of the room earlier, he asks, Taxi Driver style, if he is funny? Silly? Why did she laugh at him? Why? Claiming extreme pain, she tries to wriggle out it by claiming it wasn't real laughter; it was just "nervous laughter". Ken asks if he makes her nervous; she says "No, it was just the situation". Then he starts babbling again about how wonderful the room is and how hard he worked on it and how bad it made him feel when she ran out of there. She then posits the idea that he intends to keep her there against her will, which he denies doing.

Yet, despite her continued pleas, he refuses to seek outside help, re-assuring her that they will manage just fine by themselves. She continues to beg, promising not to tell anyone what happened. Not getting any response from him, she tries to get up, but is hit with stabbing pain. Ken advises that she shouldn't do that, as it will further injure her leg. Faith is now convinced her leg is broken. Hearing this, Ken states that he will set it for her. Despite her insistence that he can't do it because he doesn't know how, Dr. Ken perseveres, telling her that she just has to talk him through it.

Upstairs at Riverside, Seneca is watching over Nell in her bed. A nurse comes in and sets up to do an angiogram on her. Seneca talks with Bucky, who is near tears. Seneca holds out hope of operating on her, but Bucky reminds him that the aneurysm is inoperable. Nevertheless, Seneca wants to go ahead and try something - because something is better than just letting her die. Seneca tells the nurses to prep her for surgery. He then asks Bucky who is available to do the surgery. Bucky mentions Roger first, but Seneca snarls that he doesn't want Roger anywhere near his wife. They go through the rest of the list, but of course, no one is available, so Seneca will have to do it himself.

Bucky does the usual "You can't operate on your own wife" routine, but Seneca is (surprise! surprise!) adamant. Accepting this, B asks if he wants Rog to assist, but Seneca holds out for Clem. B agrees to find Clem.

Back in the secret room, Faith is still in great pain. Ken re-enters with some pieces of wood that he intends to use as splints on her leg. He tells her how lucky she is to have small bones, but then lectures her on how careless she was running out of there like she did, and how she must never let that happen again. He goes on to let her know that, although he is not "cross" with her, he does worry about her. Again, she asks for outside help, but now he's just ignoring her...

He is overjoyed to find some masking tape and prepares to operate. He rolls down her "rainbow" socks, revealing the wound. He asks "What next?" and she says something about "gross displacement", then gives further instructions as needed. She states that it is a "hairline fracture", but he takes this as good news, indicating that nothing too serious has happened. She explains that the bone has to "knit" in exactly the right position, or else she could end up with a lifelong limp, but he doesn't seem too concerned about that.

Having set the bone (causing her to scream out in pain), he proceeds to wrap it up in the splint using the masking tape, all the while stating that it will be fine and that no one will have any cause to be angry with either one of them. In great pain, she begs for morphine or something like that; he brightly notes that he has something that he got for some oral surgery last year and offers to go get that for her. Sensing an opportunity, she asks him to take her with him, but he refuses, assuring her that she will be perfectly safe there.

She begs not to be left alone in this "awful place", but again, she seems to have hit a sour note in her choice of words. Sternly, Ken reminds her that this is a special hideaway and concludes that the pain made her say that. She cannot possibly mean it, of course. He tells her that he is going to leave now to get the painkillers and also something for her to eat - a nice cup of soup perhaps. Once again, she begs, to no avail, for him to get her someone to help her, but he simply assures her that *he* is helping her.

Pleading with her to be patient just a little bit longer, he promises her that he will bring her back some wonderful things, then leaves the room. After he has left, she cries out for her father.

(Closing credits: the secret room (with bird visible)) *END*

January 26, 1976 Friday, February 11, 2011 1st Episode

Jack finds the camaraderie between Mary and Sam disturbing.  Preparations are made for Seneca to perform surgery on Nell.  Sam convinces Mary to work late in order to interview a confidential “source”, which does not go over well with Jack.  Mary finds out that Sam tricked her into working late and comes to Jack’s defense when Sam calls Jack arrogant.  Surgery is under way on Nell.  Seneca is taken aback when he realizes what the results will be.

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

Jack arrives at Channel R looking for Mary. He sees a big flashing red light (hey, wasn’t that over Nell’s ambulance?) and a sign that reads, “Do not enter when light is flashing”; Jack enters the studio anyway. Sam’s doing a telecast w/Mary holding the cue cards (it seemed to me that Sam was looking in the opposite direction from said cards, but whatever, lol!)

As soon as Sam’s finished, they realize Jack’s there. Mary’s delighted, but the cameraman scolds him for ignoring the red light & taking chances during a live show. When Jack comments that the sewer story Sam talked about seems interesting, Mary grins that it’s so interesting they’re going to be working on it rather late tonight.

Miffed, Jack states that he wanted to take Mary to dinner. Sam interjects that this evening’s dinner will be sandwiches ordered in from the deli. Jack snarks that he can certainly adapt to the situation & gives Sam his own sandwich order! Sam crisply lets Jack know he & Mary have research to do…this is no time for a picnic, “As pleasant as it would be,” he sarcastically adds. Jack says they’ll eat quickly & then he’ll fade into the wood work until Mary’s ready to go home, but Sam huffs that Mary doesn’t need distractions.

Mary agrees w/Sam & tells Jack she’ll call him when she’s done…”Done with WHAT?” Jack grouses (um, work!!!!) Sam snips that though Ch. R probably seems like a casual operation, they do have business to attend to & their office can’t be used as a social club. “Sorry Jack-you’re out of luck!” Of course, Jack’s none too pleased….

Seneca & Bucky scrub up & Seneca defends his decision to go ahead with the surgery…he’d never forgive himself for not trying to save Nell if an autopsy showed there was any chance of stopping the aneurism. Bucky knows how Sen feels but sighs that the odds aren’t in Nell’s favor. Sen asserts that she pulled through the first time & might do so again. He talks wistfully about the wonderful time he & Nell had today & Bucky’s glad to hear they were so happy.

As Sen yammers on about the surgery, Bucky asks what he’ll do when he gets in & finds the aneurism. Sen replies that he won’t know until he sees it. Just then Roger enters & “boot licks” to Sen that he’s sorry the operation’s necessary, but he’ll do his very best. He’s stunned when Sen announces he’s doing the surgery on his own wife!

Rog sputters objections…he saw the angiograms & was surprised surgery was even considered, to be honest. Is Sen sure he’s making a medical decision here & not an emotional one? Bucky tells Rog to cool it-if they do nothing, Nell will surely die. Aren’t they there to preserve life? Rog counters that he wants Nell to live as much as they do, but he truly doubts surgery will do any good.

Sen declares that he’s going to take the chance no matter how remote it may be. When Rog gripes about Nell being put through pain unnecessarily, Sen roars that he’ll do whatever’s in his power to do! Clem then enters saying he got there from visiting his sister as fast as he could. He thinks he’ll be assisting Rog & is also taken aback to hear Sen will be at the helm.

Assuming Rog will assist, Clem asks for permission to be in the OR with them as long as it’s not too crowded. Rog is stricken when Sen chooses Clem to assist & says dismissively that Rog can be 2nd asst. (obviously throwing Rog a bone & not really wanting him around). Rog protests that since he’s the one on duty, proper protocol says HE should be the one to help; when Sen barks that Clem was Nell’s surgeon the first time around & they need his expertise, Rog meekly agrees to the 2nd asst. post, “apple polishing” that he’ll do whatever Sen wishes.

We then see Nell on the operating table (the poor thing look like a member of “The Flying Nun” cast with the way they have the white sheets draped over her head!)

Mary tries to diffuse the Jack/Sam set-to by cheerfully remarking that working late happens to the best of us, even “ace reporters” like Jack. He fusses that he may work late when there’s a deadline, but this is the 2nd time this week Sam’s wanted her to stay. Sam offers that they do indeed have deadlines & the days just don’t provide enough time to get it all done.

Jack scoffs in a superior tone that he knows plenty of folks in TV news & they rarely work late—if they do, they’re well paid for it; they wouldn’t believe the Ch. R conditions! When Sam smirks that Ch. R’s not your average station, Jack rails that Sam’s not your average boss, either. “You figure $110/wk. buys you a full time slave!”

Sam (who isn’t at all intimidated by Jack’s bluster) counters that Mary knew the hours/workload when she took the job & is no more of a slave than Sam himself. Jack moans to Mary that she shouldn’t put up with this, but Mary points out that the other night when Sam asked her to stay late, he wound up letting her get out of it so she & Jack could attend the basketball game!

Jack broods that Sam wants Mary to hang around late for personal reasons, not professional ones…he knows exactly what Sam’s got in mind! Sam then makes the announcement that Mary’s doing an interview in 30 minutes with a guy who’s ready to reveal some juicy tidbits involving the group opposing construction of the sewage treatment plant.

Jack’s peeved, but Sam states that he’ll stay behind & do research at the office while Mary’s out on the interview—they won’t be together, ok? He cheekily notes that he would’ve told Mary about this right after the telecast, but her “protector” arrived & interrupted! Jack angrily asks why Mary’s going alone (um, didn’t you just complain about her being with Sam???) How does Sam know this man she’s meeting isn’t some loon?

Sam grins that he’s arranged for her to meet the guy at Ryans’, so it’s perfectly safe. Also, Sam’s met this guy before & trusts him…his name’s Wright…Mr. Emerson Wright. Sam told Mr. W to give his name at the bar & wait for Mary at a table. She’s tickled pink, but Jack has reservations about it…”Figures” Sam remarks dryly. If Sam already knows this man & if Sam’s the producer of this garbage series (hmm, Jack, was that a pot-shot with a double meaning?), why doesn’t Sam do the interview himself…why send Mary?

Sam saucily coos that Mr. W likes the ladies…he’d certainly spill the beans to Mary quicker than he would to him. Jack growls that he’d like to give Sam some advice; “OLD TIMER, I don’t see how I’d be able to stop you!” Sam guffaws (ouch!) Jack hisses that this is Sam’s story & he shouldn’t be sending a “cub” to handle it for him!

Mary (finally speaking up!) tells Jack to cut it out…this type of assignment is exactly what she came to Ch. R. to do…he’d better not dare try to talk Sam out of letting her go! Jack demurs but wants to go along-he’ll mill about in the background while she talks to Mr. W. Sam says no way…Mr. W’s expecting her to come alone. “Well at least she won’t be stuck doing homework with YOU!” Jack seethes.

Mary tells Jack to stop & then asks what Mr. W’s like; Sam smiles that he’s a really charming fellow w/movie star looks. However, Mary shouldn’t let the handsome exterior fool her—there’s a good person behind that “Hollywood face”. Mary giddily heads out, asking Jack to drop her off. Once they’re gone, we see the wheels in Sam’s head begin turning…

Mary gleefully comes into Ryans’ & is greeted by Maeve & John. She tells them she’s there on assignment & they point out a nearby customer that’s waiting to be interviewed (M & J are stifling giggles & we get the feeling they know something’s up…) Maeve says he gave his name as Mr. Wright (it sounded to me like she said “Aimerson” instead of Emerson, but oh well) Mary notes how odd the guy looks (coat collar turned up, hat pulled down low on his head, scarf around his mouth, & sunglasses).

Mary nervously goes over to introduce herself; Mr. W answers in a gravelly, clearly put-on voice. He asks what a beautiful woman like her is doing in a place like Ch. R. Realizing what’s going on, Mary pulls off the hat & hits him with it…of course, it’s Sam! She laughingly calls him a wretch & vows to get back at him one day. Maeve & John watch them, highly amused.

Mary teases Sam for going on about Mr. W’s “Hollywood face”—he’s insane! Maeve purrs to John that a sure-fire way to Mary’s heart is to make her laugh. “I hope so,” John beams, “He’s Mr. RIGHT, after all!” Mary continues cracking up at Sam’s antics, & he explains he only did this b/c of Jack. “He kept trying to tell me how to do my job & kept suspecting my motives—I got fed up & gave in to a sudden impulse to teach him a lesson!”

Turning more serious, Sam snaps that Jack acts as if he owns Mary—ok, maybe that’s part of their relationship, but that doesn’t give Jack the right to breeze in & take over! Mary defends that Sam wouldn’t accept it when Jack tried to be nice--Jack would’ve been content to stay on the side while they worked (um, and what’s so nice about horning in & spying on them at the studio?)

Sam balks that if Jack loved Mary, he’d trust her. “It’s YOU he won’t trust!” Mary chortles, “And after this little stunt, maybe he’s on the right (Wright?, lol) track!” Sam tries to persuade her to work w/him tonight after all…Mary says no, not after this mean trick, but Sam insists it was a tad devious at worst. Mary sighs that she was all set to work & if Sam had just let Jack save face & make his point, Jack would’ve left them alone. “He didn’t really want to be w/us…you don’t know him…if you’d just stuck to your guns a bit longer, it would’ve been all right” (hmm, so it’s Sam’s fault??)

Sam purrs that things haven’t turned out so badly…HE’S the one with Mary now, correct? Mary grouses that she loves Jack & won’t have Sam or anybody else lying to him. Sam jeers that Jack had it coming, but Mary pouts that Sam went too far. “A minute ago you were laughing” Sam grins, & Mary admits no one could help laughing at his silly get-up!

Sam doesn’t want her to be mad at him; Mary assures she’s not, but she also can’t go along w/a gag that makes Jack look like a fool. Sam smirks that Jack needn’t be the wiser, but Mary plans to tell him when she goes over there now. Sam wants 2 hrs. of her time to work, but she says no…he finally gets her to agree to a burger w/him there at Ryans’ but then she’s heading to Jack’s…20 minutes tops!

As Mary goes to hang up her coat, Sam approaches Maeve & John who seem to be squarely in Sam’s corner. Maeve soothes that at least Sam got Mary to laugh. “Only a little,” he sighs, “But we are having dinner together”. Maeve goes to get the burgers & wishes Sam courage (hmm, in his efforts to win Mary or in his eating the saliva burgers, HA!) Sam states that at least someone’s on his side & John exclaims, “Oh we are, WE ARE!”

Later, Maeve tidies up the bar as Bob comes in…he asks how the “TV producer” is doing & Maeve laughs that Bob shouldn’t try to promote Mary so quickly. Bob swoons that Mary won’t be just an asst. for long. He says he wanted to see her for info. on the filing system at Frank’s office-new secretary Georgia is having some trouble. Maeve states that she knows Mary trained Georgia & left her detailed notes, & Bob admits he hasn’t seen Mary in awhile (ah, that’s it!)

He muses about going to meet her over at Ch. R (yeah, someone else to waltz in while the red light is on!) Maeve reluctantly informs that Mary’s at Jack’s apt. “Oh, is THAT still on?” Bob grumps. Maeve glumly says yes, very much so. Bob reports that John said Mary would be so busy with the new job she wouldn’t have time for Jack, but Maeve clucks that this was wishful thinking on John’s part…he HOPED she wouldn’t be able to see Jack, but Mary definitely has made time for him.

Bob fumes that he just doesn’t understand Mary’s love for Jack, & Maeve sighs that we can’t pick others’ mates, which is a pity. Jack’s NOT the guy she & John would’ve chosen for their daughter. “Well, I’m with you on that,” Bob sulks, “For as much good as it ever does me!” Maeve comforts that she knows how Bob feels for Mary…Mary knows as well & it means a lot to her.

Bob complains that Mary thinks of him as a pal & nothing more…he’s not competition for Fenelli, a new job, or even a good book!! “Mary’s got much more on her mind than good ole Buddy Bob!” he sarcastically grouches. Maeve fawns that Mary loves Bob in her own way & that Bob will find the right girl…she’ll pop into his life one day when he least expects it.

Bob scoffs, but Maeve coos that she believes some people were destined to be together like herself/John. He brightens a bit, promising to be more patient. Maeve adds that Mary would say “destiny” applies to herself/Jack. “Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I think a meaningful relationship includes marriage, growing over the yrs. until you have a true, loving partnership…it’s worth waiting for & once you have it, you must hold on to it!”

The scene shifts to the OR where that disgusting slurping sound is all we can hear…Sen’s frustrated over the lack of progress & snaps at Clem & Rog…he even yells at Rog to “Shaddup” when Rog tries to point out the futility of the whole thing. The others seem to agree w/Rog, but Sen stubbornly continues. “DAMMIT, give me some suction!” he hollers, his voice breaking…(I’m sure that was supposed to be quite dramatic/sad, but it was laughable, sorry to say…)

***** Recap Re-Written in 2010 *****

In the secret room, Faith’s sitting up in a chair & had fallen asleep across the table. She wakes up w/a start when the canary makes noise. Realizing Kooky Kenneth’s not there, she tries to get up to make her escape. The pain of her injured leg is too intense & she falls to the floor. At that moment, K arrives & flusteredly helps her…what was she doing? Faith claims she simply got tired of sitting.

She cries out in pain & K soothes that she won’t have to use the chair any longer—he’s brought her a mattress & some bedding. “You’ll be comfortable, Faith, I promise…Everything’s going to be fine…I’ll take care of you.” Faith looks away…it seems she’s realizing the gravity of her situation & that K doesn’t intend to give her access to the outside world.

In their bedroom, Frank’s affectionately holding LJ as Dee looks on, annoyed. When Frank grinningly comments that LJ should be tired after the outing he/Grandma took today, Dee clucks that Maeve didn’t really spend that much time w/the child & turns the topic to dinner (which I guess DEE prepared…sheesh!) Frank gives an obligatory “Dinner was fine” & goes back to sweetly cuddling his son.

He says LJ looks more like Johnny every day, & Dee naturally pushes for Frank to say he looks like her, too. She then suggests she/Frank go to a movie later, but Frank replies that he’s got reading to do for work…why doesn’t she see if Bob’s free (ole “Buddy Bob” probably is!)

Dee grows more irate when Frank keeps fussing over LJ; he tries to get the child to smile (the poor kid’s tearful) Dee huffs that LJ doesn’t have to smile on command--“He’s not going to be a politician!” she jeers. Paying no mind to her snideness, Frank beams that LJ can be whatever he wants, “He’s got it all: brains, looks, & here come those lungs again!” (LJ began to cry).

Dee pointedly interjects that LJ’s also got doting parents…isn’t that what it takes to be a winner? Frank responds that it surely doesn’t hurt…he then tries playing peek-a-boo w/the baby & kisses him, saying how much he loves him. Dee growls that LJ’s a whole lot better off than she is in that dept.!

Frank tells her to stop & she demurs that she just wonders what it’s like to always have supportive parents around—her childhood wasn’t like that. Frank counters (not nastily, just matter-of-factly) that Dee had her mom & brother…it wasn’t all bad. “Oh, sure, it was terrific!” she sarcastically grumbles.

Dee then fakes having a splinter in her foot—could Frank have a look & get it out? Frank would rather she handle it herself, lol, but finally gives in. Dee takes the opportunity to put LJ in his room despite Frank’s protests. While she’s gone, Frank wearily gets a needle from the drawer. Dee returns w/matches all peaches/cream (grrr!)

She lights the match to sterilize the needle &, in what I thought was a funny exchange, Frank leans back from the match as if she’s lighting him on fire (well, ya never know!) & he then says “Ouch” b/c the needle’s hot. When he “explains” to Dee that metal conducts heat, she gobbles that it’s “amazing” (oh boy!!!!) She does, however, segue that into a meaningful “I know how little things can hurt a lot!”

Dee puts her foot on Frank’s lap, but he doesn’t see a splinter (hmm…wonder why?) Dee insists it’s there. A second later, LJ starts wailing & Frank wants to go to him immediately. Dee tries to hang on Frank & then yells out, “I’m hurting!” (puhleeze!) Frank frowns that LJ’s a baby & she’s supposed to be an adult! “Well, I’m your wife!” she shrills, “That should count for something!”

Dee (who manipulatively takes Frank’s cane so he can’t get up!!! ) rants about how she gets no attention from him. Frank begs, “If you won’t let me go check on LJ, would you please do it?” Dee lividly hollers, “You can go see for yourself!” She flings the cane at the wall, grabs her shoes, & slams out of the room!

Meanwhile, Maeve’s in the kitchen when a somber Pat walks in…he breaks the bad news of Nell’s 2nd aneurism bursting, adding that the outlook’s bleak. Maeve expresses sympathy, “That poor woman, she’s so full of joy for life.” As soon as Maeve exits, Dee (who’s full of something…) comes in from the other entrance—as soon as she sees Pat (who has his back to her at this point) she gets a smug, sneaky look on her face….

K’s brought Faith some pain pills & encourages her to take one w/his mom’s old saying, “Down the little red lane!” He’s also brought her some tea…Faith’s peeved about the whole thing-who’s K to say what she can/can’t do? At last she relents & takes the pill, washing it down w/tea.

K apologizes for Faith’s pain…is there anything else he can do? Faith pleads w/him to take her out of there-she promises he won’t get into trouble. K sputters that they’ll see how she’s doing after the pain pill takes effect. He then begins making up Faith’s bed, informing that he got the linens out of the hospital supply closet & the mattress from a cot in the interns’ quarters.

Faith’s incredulous that he managed to get all of these things down to the room without being spotted…didn’t anyone ever notice? K reports that Clem helped him get on the elevator w/the chair she’s sitting on. “I told him it was for Dr. Beaulac’s office…he believed me…they all trust me up there & you’ll come to trust me, too.”

Faith asserts that she wants to go upstairs, but K responds that he doesn’t know why she’d want to leave a place that contains all of her lovely treasures, a place made just for her. She fumes that he doesn’t even know her, but K asks, in all seriousness, “Who knows you better?”

Faith stammers that her dad, brother, sister, Bucky, Pat all know her….when she says Pat’s name, K snorts that Dr. Ryan doesn’t know her at all. “He may have looked at you, but he never saw you. He never appreciated your charms, your kindness, your sensitivity…he doesn’t know how unique you are.”

Faith says she’s sorry for baiting him…she likes him & is flattered that he’s done this for her. Won’t he take her upstairs now? They can remain friends….K whimpers that she’s only saying this b/c she wants to go. Granted, she was pleasant to him, but she never truly wanted to be friends. When he showed her his architecture book, she wasn’t interested & she laughed at him when he brought her to this room.

As he says all of this, he’s carrying her over to the bed he just fixed up. Faith yelps in pain & tells him she never meant to laugh at him or hurt him. “You never thought I was actually worth knowing,” K broods, “And I know that even right now, the person you want w/you is Dr. Ryan”. Faith rails that if he cares so much, he’d get her proper medical help…she needs a doctor, any doctor!

K coos, “Here’s a doctor” & holds a small mirror up in front of her. Faith looks into it & groans (um, I hope she groaned b/c she saw that she’s got a big bruise on her forehead, not b/c she thought she’d see Pat’s face appear in the mirror or something…LOL! Did she think she was on Romper Room?? )

Faith tells K, “You’re really weird!” (ya think????) K quietly replies that he doesn’t see what’s so weird about trying to protect someone you love. “You think it’s funny that I did all of this, don’t you? That’s b/c you’re not used to real devotion. Others would laugh, too…so what? Let ‘em laugh! They’re jealous! Most people are selfish & incapable of true feelings. Well, I’m not selfish. I’ll look after you…we’ll stay here & be happy until you’re well again”.

Faith sobs that she’s in agony. K offers her another pain pill, but she states she can’t take one for several hours (& there’s no pain pill for a shattered romance or a terrified spirit!) K brings her some tea…it was one of his mom’s favorites that he chose just for Faith. As she drinks, K watches her longingly.

Dee smilingly says hi to Pat, still singing her “I have a splinter” song. He offers to look at it, but she says it can wait (hmm…) She then goads that it’s strange to see him without someone hovering over him. Pat tells her to knock it off & Dee asks where she is. “Who?” Pat questions. “Jean Harlowe,” Dee jokes while striking a pose, “Who do you think I mean? Faith!”

Pat grumps that Faith’s on her way to the beach house…he didn’t feel like going. Dee muses that she thought the two were inseparable & Pat snaps that just so Dee won’t die of curiosity, she might as well know that he/Faith aren’t ‘going around together’ anymore. Dee says she’s sorry, she didn’t know…she adds cheekily that Pat’s left yet another broken heart behind him.

She presses for details…did they have a huge row or was it a sad, solemn mutual agreement. Pat says they simply decided they shouldn’t spend so much time together. Dee blathers on about Pat/Faith’s relationship, much to his irritation. He tells her to back off…he doesn’t want to discuss it!

Yeah, good luck w/that one, Pat! Dee says she used to watch Pat/Faith together & thought it was unfair for him to be tied down to someone like that…Faith’s not his type! “Me on the other hand, well, I’m your type, “ she flirts, “Only you won’t admit it!” He grouchily asks if she’s looking for a fight.

Dee replies that she simply knows a lot about the Ryan men though she wishes she didn’t. “I think I’d be happier if I didn’t know Frank so well…I wish I didn’t know what was going on in his head.” Pat asks what’s up & Dee complains that no matter what she does, Frank has no interest in her. She used to think he was preoccupied w/work & then w/thoughts of Jill, but she realizes now he simply doesn’t care for her at all. “He doesn’t hate me, but he doesn’t love me…he wishes I weren’t around!”

Pat huffs that this isn’t so, but Dee whines that it’s strange for a man to have more fun playing w/a baby than wanting to do things w/his wife! Pat fires back that Dee’s being silly, but she pouts that he spends time w/LJ just so he can avoid her. As she yammers on about Frank running to the baby as soon as he cries, how she tries to please Frank but can’t, Pat’s giving her a knowing, “oh come on, get real” look.

Dee simpers that she wants things to work out w/Frank, but she doesn’t know what’s wrong (Hello! Maybe it’s the fact that you act like a total arse!) Pat calls her out on the fact that she’s jealous of her own son! Dee’s stricken, & Pat scolds that she should be proud that Frank’s a good father. “You shouldn’t envy the time he gives to LJ…in a way, that’s like spending time w/you.” Dee moans that Frank loves LJ so much & she can’t get the same emotions from him.

She then starts back-peddling a bit, admitting that she’s a tad jealous. “Who am I kidding? I’m the most jealous female this side of the Mississippi! I try not to be, but I can’t help it…do you think I was born this way?” Pat giggles about the prospect of a ‘jealousy gene’, but Dee’s serious when she states that even though she knows she’s impossible when she’s like that, she can’t stop herself…she’s so scared Frank doesn’t care.

Pat soothes that she needs to give it more time…if Dee wants Frank, he’s sure she’ll get him. “And that’s b/c you’re so lovable” Pat purrs (the two are now holding hands & Dee’s gazing up at him adoringly) He cautions her to put a lid on her jealousy & realize that Frank’s loving their child means loving a part of her as well. Dee thanks him for his support & begins to say, “You know what I wish…” Before she can finish, Pat softly interrupts, “I wish you good luck, but now I have to go back to the hospital.” He quickly leaves as Dee heads upstairs.

A forlorn Frank’s in bed & feigns sleep as soon as he hears Dee walk into the room. She calls out to him a few times, boo-hooing that she’s sorry, can’t they talk now, she wants to make amends….Frank continues pretending to be asleep & Dee plops into the chair, dejected. (serves her right!)

K enters the secret room merrily chattering on about how they’ve got hot/cold running water, the old pipes having been incorporated into the new or something like that, blah blah. He then realizes Faith’s asleep (maybe she’s _faking, too) K swoons that the water’s a ‘good omen’ & he’s not frightened any longer…he knows things will be all right…they’ll be as he always dreamed…

At that moment, a call comes into the neurology nurses’ station from a mechanic at Sal’s garage. He asks for Faith & the nurse says she’s left for the day. The mechanic gripes that Faith’s car is ready now & he’s got to close up shop for the night. The nurse clucks that she can’t help him & he wants to leave a message that the car will be in the hospital parking lot w/the keys on the floor behind the front seat.

The nurse, who doesn’t write any of this down, snips that she’ll tell Faith if she sees her, but certainly can’t promise…(um, can’t you stick a note in her lounge mailbox??) The mechanic indignantly hangs up….Meanwhile, Faith awakens to see K sitting right next to her, staring tenderly. Shaken, Faith turns away.
