Enduring Understandings:

Fashion styling is composed of several different wet styling techniques. Wet hairstyling never goes out of style; styles created from wet styling techniques last the longest.

Essential Questions:

• What effect does directional placement of styling tools have to do with the finished result?

• Why is it important to thoroughly wet the hair prior to the service?

• What results can you expect from partially wet hair?

• How can wet styling tools be a carrier of contagious diseases?

Knowledge from this Unit:

Students will be able to:

• Compare and contrast the uses of different styling tools.

• Compare and contrast the results of using these different styling tools.

• Draw, label, and define pin curls.

• Explain theory of many hair styling techniques including:

o finger waving

o pin curling

o roller sets

o wrapping

Skills from this Unit:

Students will be able to:

• Perform many hair styling techniques including:

o finger waving

• LESSON 1: WET SERVICES THEORY

1. Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom.

GPS Focus Standards:

HS-CS-II-3 Students will study the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo and create various hair styles and shapes. Laboratory training includes 15 hours in theory of shampooing, 20 hours of styling training on mannequins and 25 hours on live models without compensation. 2. Review Essential Questions. Post Essential Questions in the classroom.

• What effect does directional placement of styling tools have to do with the finished result?

• Why is it important to thoroughly wet the hair prior to the service?

• What results can you expect from partially wet hair?

4. Interest grabber:

Ask Students… have you ever dreamed of working for the movies or Broadway? Well the styles the director chooses are from the decade the theme is set in. Example: Hair spray was in the 50’s, footloose that was just filmed in Georgia was set in the 70’s. Most of the styles can be achieved with wet styling techniques. Even on the Red Carpet, movie stars are wearing finger waves and pin curls.

5. Begin the Wet Hairstyling Pincurls PowerPoint.

6. Discuss the tools, implements, and materials.

7. Demonstrate how to find a hair part.

8. Explain the different methods of wet styling we will use.

9. Break the methods down one at a time.

10. Have students make flash cards for a review of the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo and create various hair styles and shapes.

11. Summary:

• Discuss the answers to the essential review questions as a group.

• LESSON 2: WET STYLING NOTEBOOK AND LAB

1. Hand out the Mind Maps Worksheet with each method posted in the center as the main topic. You will need one each for Finger waves, pin curls, rollers, and wrapping.

2. When all students have had time to work alone on the mind maps, ask for a volunteer to record answers on the board.

3. The volunteer will draw a map and add answers as the instructor facilitates the process.

4. YOU MUST MAKE MODELS FOR EACH SERVICE FOR THE STUDENTS TO HAVE AN EXAMPLE.

• NOTE: Use bald manikins and wig pins. The wig pins will work for rollers. Wig pins and clippies work for pin curl clips and you will need to do a finger wave and wrapping model.

5. Handout the Wet Hairstyling Notebook Worksheet and give detailed directions. (attached)

6. Handout Wet Hairstyling Rubric for grading lab activities.

• Each day I start the lab off with a demonstration of a method for the students to see. Have an

example at the desk for students to view.

7. Monitor, assist, and provide feedback as the student completes the notebook. This will take several weeks to complete.

8. Summary

• Review for written test and practical assessment.

Use for student review of key terms.
