1. You are planning on leasing a car. You’ve narrowed your choices down to a midsized Taurus, which gets 23 mpg (miles per gallon) and an Excursion SUV, which gets 13 mpg. You are aware that a gallon of gas when combusted releases 28 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. You intend to drive an average of 12,000 miles per year during the lease period.

a. How much more CO2 would you be releasing into the air annually if you were to chose the SUV over the mid-sized car?

b. How much more gas money would it cost you annually, if gas averaged $3.00 per gallon?

c. How many gallons of gas would you waste annually if you were to pick the SUV over the mid-sized car?

d. The Sierra Club claims that switching from the mid-sized car to the SUV would waste enough energy to keep a 75 watt light bulb lit for 30 years. How many kWh would this involve? (hint: 75 watt light bulb burns 75 watt hours/day)

e. If electricity costs 17 cents per kWh, which would cost you more… to pay the electrical bill on the 75 W light bulb lit up for 30 years, or the extra gas money it would cost if you were to pick the SUV over the mid-sized car (use the answer you calculated in part b.)? How much more or less would it cost?

f. Describe three ways the environment would be more damaged if advertising influenced a significant number of people to lease SUV’s over a midsized car.
