Roles and Rules

Debate Roles:

Opening Statement Presenter:

Gather the main arguments into an introductory statement. Do not give specific information; just provide the main argument with a rationale.

Topic Presenters:

Present the main arguments for the team. Each presenter gives specific details that prove each rationale.

Rebuttal Presenters:

Answer the arguments of the other team. These presenters must take notes as the other team is presenting their arguments and respond to every argument, using specific information to disprove them.

Closing Statement Presenter:

Present the closing arguments for the team. Repeat the main idea with rationale and or counter-argument.

Debate Rules:

Be respectful.

Do not interrupt.

Do not whisper while another speaker is talking.

A grade reduction will occur for each violation

Debate Structure/Time:

Opening statements for both sides = 1 minute each side

Arguments for both sides = 2 minutes each side

Rebuttal conference = 2 minutes simultaneous

Rebuttals = 2 minutes each

Closing statements for both sides = 1 minute each

Total time for each debate = 14 minutes

Debate Preparation:

1) Read the materials provided by the California Secretary of State’s office on their website:

2) Read the arguments both for and against your assigned propositions, and research the people who argue each side for further information.

3) Develop your arguments/ choose which side you will take (2 people per side)

4) Write out in one thesis statement what your position is and the reasons that support it.

5) Use these note cards topics to organize your info: (Total of 9 note cards)

6) Provide quotes, statistics, or other evidence for each card with its topic.

7) Each 2 student team should assign roles of Opening Presenter, Topic, Rebuttal and Closing Presenter

8) Each 2 student team should Practice, Practice Practice TOGETHER. Meet, use Skype or the phone. Each person should be VERY familiar with the other’s roles for support and good Rebuttal Conference mid-debate.

An in-class essay will result from this debate.
