Formative & Summative Assessment Evidence In pairs, all first grade students will be able to identify and create words that can be formed using the bases –at, -ell, -et, -ig, -op, -ug with 100% accuracy. Informal Formative – The students will be informally assessed by being observed. Formal Formative - The students will be asked to write the words they create on a separate sheet of paper that they will turn in to be graded. ISTE Standards for StudentsFramework for 21st Century LearningCommunication and Collaboration – The students will interact and collaborate with their classmates in order to complete the activity using the flower boards. Creativity and Innovation – The students will use their creativity and innovation to predict what words can be formed using different bases. Accommodations, ModificationsStudents who have an IEP will have adapted work projected to their particular needs. For example, having Velcro placed on each individual petal used for creating the flowers makes the petals easier to pick up off of a flat surface, accommodating a student with a fine motor disability. Explicit InstructionsBig Idea StatementThe students will be constructing flowers, using centers and petals, to help them create rhyming words using the bases –at, -ell, -et, -ig, -op, and –ug.Essential Questions StatementHow can we create rhyming words? What words can be form using the base –at? What words can be form using the base –ell? What words can be form using the base –et? What words can be form using the base –ig?What words can be form using the base –op?What words can be form using the base –ug?Objective StatementDuring the activity, all first grade students will correctly identify at least six different words that can be formed using the bases –at, -ell, -et, -ig, -op, and –ug.Transition The students will have a word using one of the bases previously discussed placed on their desk, they will need to find another student with a word that has the same base (because it will rhyme), and those students will become partners. Key VocabularyRhyming Lesson ProcedurePreAssessment of StudentsDuring the discussions, students will demonstrate their knowledge of rhyming words, and how they can create rhyming words using the same base. Modeling of the ConceptStudents will be shown the material they be using the complete the activity. Guiding the PracticeStudents will be shown an example of the flower card, as well as the worksheet they will be expected to turn in. Providing the Independent PracticeAfter the students find their partner, using the rhyming notecards, each pair of students will need to grab a “Word Flowers” bag that will contain directions and an answer key, the worksheet, along with two flower cards, and all of the petals needed to complete the activity. In pairs, the students will pull out a yellow flower center, that will have a word base on it including –at, -ell, -et, -ig, -op, or –ug. The yellow circle goes in the center of the flower. The students will then think of words that can be created using the base in the center of the flower.Using the petals, the students will find letters that create basic words they will know. Each flower is all pink or all purple; therefore the students should not be confused. They can also look at the answer key for additional help. After completing one flower, they should write down the words they have created on the corresponding worksheet. Then they can move on to the next center. TransitionThe students will name the rhyming words they created by counting the number of syllables in each word by clapping their hands before they move onto the word base. Informal EvaluationGroup Discussion – The children will be informally assess when they participate in the group discussion at the beginning of the lesson, discussing rhyming words and words that can be created using the bases –at, -ell, -et, -ig, -op, and –ug.ClosureSummary & Review of the LearningAs a whole, the students will discuss the words that they have listed under each base on the corresponding worksheet.
