Ten Commandments for Safe
4-H Shooting Sports
1. Treat every firearm and bow with respect.
2. Watch the muzzle or arrow point. Always be in control of the direction the bow or firearm is pointed, even if you stumble.
3. Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions, and that you have only the proper ammunition or arrows for the gun or bow that you are shooting.
4. Be sure of your target before you pull the trigger or release arrow; know your backstop or DON’T SHOOT!
5. Unload guns and take arrows off the string when not in use. Carry guns and bos in cases, UNLOADED and secure.
6. Never point a bow or firearm at anything you do not want to shoot; AVOID ALL HORSEPLAY!
7. Never climb a fence or tree or jump a ditch with a loaded firearm. Never pull a gun towards you.
8. Never shoot at a target on a flat, hard surface or water. Be sure of your target before you squeeze the trigger or release the string.
9. Store guns and ammunition or bows and arrows separately beyond the reach of children or careless adults.
10. Anyone shooting a firearm or near a shooter should wear safety glasses.

4-H record keeping is a life skill. Your 4-H record is an organized presentation of what you have learned and accomplished in 4-H. It is a useful tool for determining your own progress and personal growth.
Assembling Your 4-H Record Book
Assemble your 4-H record book in the following order:
Cover: Use a standard 4-H record book cover
Current 4-H Member’s Annual Report: A new 4-H Member’s Annual Report is completed each year.
Accumulative Record For Shooting Activities: This is an ongoing accumulative record of your Accomplishments & Awards you have received. Every year you should update the record and bring it forward in your record book.
Your 4-H Story: The story may include:
• What your 4-H shooting sports experiences have meant to you
• Goals
• Challenges/Problems encountered and how met
• Results and what you learned
• Plans for next year
Photos: Tell your 4-H story with photos. Your photos should have captions and a date.
Clippings: Try to include clippings from the shooting sports articles that are in the newspaper. Underline or highlight your name in the clippings.
