NEW: Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York (part of Northwell Health) is offering a 9-12 month paid internship in clinical research related to child development and neurodevelopmental disorders. NEW: Research Tech position with Dr. Glenn Jaffe’s laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke.? Dr Jaffe is a Clinician Scientist who conducts?clinically relevant basic research to determine the molecular and cell?biological mechanisms responsible for macular degeneration (the leading cause of vision loss in individuals over 65 years old).? ?Some of the specific techniques used in the laboratory include: Cell culture using ocular-derived human cells and other non-ocular cell types, immunofluorescence, immunocytochemistry, RNA purification, polymerase chain reaction, agarose and SDS gel electrophoresis, Western blot, plasmid preparation, and transfection, adenoviral-mediated gene transfer, apoptosis assays, and ELISAs. Specific job responsibilities: The technician will perform a variety of complex technical duties to support Dr Jaffe’s research program.? Specifically, the technician will: conduct experiments under Dr. Jaffe’s guidance, using techniques described above; compile and analyze data from these experiments, and document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results; confer with Dr. Jaffe to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required; review laboratory methods manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments; determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests; help organize and orchestrate?in vivo?studies, including pre-operative set-up and post-operative examinations; maintain a colony of transgenic mice;? obtain, prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examination; prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions; sustain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties; ensure that expenditures are in-line with budget; clean and maintain laboratory equipment; review work of lower level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel. ?A Bachelor's degree in a science-related field is required. The lab is affiliated with the Department of Neurology, the Friedman Brain Institute and the Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple Sclerosis at the Icahn School of Medicine located on Fifth Avenue at 98th Street in Manhattan, New York City. Their work investigates mechanisms of lesion formation and repair during central nervous system inflammation, with a translational interest in multiple sclerosis, which is the most common non-traumatic cause of paralysis in young adults in the US. ?The research assistant will work on a focused project investigating how resident CNS cells control?entry of immune cells into the brain and spinal cord during inflammatory disease. The research assistant will be engaged in the following techniques: immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, mouse genotyping, in vitro culture and co-culture of CNS and immune cell lineages, genome-scale analysis of gene expression, and models of multiple sclerosis. ?Opportunities to learn flow cytometry and 2 photon imaging will also be available. The research assistant will be responsible for mouse colony management, ordering laboratory reagents, and general lab maintenance. Opportunities for scientific mentorship and manuscript authorship are available. The position will start in July 2017 and is initially available for one year. Position at the Duke Center for Macular Diseases: This position for a Research Technician is open in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke University, working with clinician-scientists in the Duke Center for Macular Diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 55.?This research includes NIH-, foundation grant- and industry-funded research in dry and wet AMD, with a specific focus on understanding the role of inflammatory cells in AMD. The technician will be involved in focused studies for imaging of postmortem eyes (high-resolution MRI, two-photon imaging, optical coherence tomography, photoacustic imaging) and flow cytometry analysis of inflammatory cells of interest, monocytes and macrophages from patient volunteers (i.e. human research subjects) with AMD. This work will involve processing and preparation of cell and tissue samples from patients. Prior applied research experience is preferred but not required. Specific experience with imaging methods and flow cytometry methods is not required. Knowledge of good laboratory and good clinical practices is desirable but not required, but the successful applicant must be willing to learn and apply these practices. The successful applicant will have a strong educational foundation in the biological sciences (especially cell and molecular biology) and will be motivated, hard-working, have excellent critical thinking skills, embrace and understand safety and compliance protocols, and work well with others, including collaborating research scientists, clinical research coordinators, and supervising faculty investigators.
