ICD-9 codes will not be accepted after October 1, 2013 nor will ICD-10 codes be accepted for services before October 1, 2013. Although CMS has developed an ICD-9 to ICD-10 crosswalk known as the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) to assist converting data from ICD-9 to ICD-10, the use of GEMs is not a substitute for learning the new ICD-10 codes. ................
