Having so many options for strong and exporting your pictures there is no wonder that you can tie yourself in knots. In our article, we will talk about the two most popular image formats and provide you with the detailed information on how to convert PNG to JPG. Do not start panicking, as this article does not apply to professionals in raster and vector graphics. It is a brief analysis in order to better understand for what purposes to use these two formats. What is JPG and when to use this format JPG was designed to compress and store full-color photos. Depending on your preference, you can use this format as "JPEG" or "JPG" as both are acceptable variants of one acronym, namely, Joint Photographic Experts Group. Despite being the property of the association of American photographers, the association itself says it is an open format. This format has become very popular especially after the introduction of digital photography. Its main advantages are the possibility of fast, non-resource-consuming and very strong compression of full-color images. JPG allows you to flexibly adjust the degree of image compression: from 0% (strong compression) to 100% (without compression). Typically, 60% -75% is enough to significantly reduce the weight of the file, while maintaining excellent quality on most screens. In addition, JPG files "weigh" a little. They can be easily transferred from phone to phone, by email or put on the Internet. Also, a small size allows you to store a large number of images. What kind of images should be saved in JPG format? JPG format is best for saving photos with smooth transitions of brightness and contrast, but to save something like drawings, texts and other photos with sharp contrast transitions, it fits very badly, and in this case, you need to convert JPG to PNG. What is PNG and when to use it? At first, PNG was developed as an alternative to GIF at that time as no one from outside was allowed to develop it. The abbreviation PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics, and originally it was designed for using it on the web. This format of raster graphics is completely open and its description is on the site of the W3C consortium. So what are the advantages of the format? Full support for alpha transparency that allows you to make the image areas transparent and translucent. An efficient compression algorithm without loss of quality. Similar to LZW, but slightly more effective. A possibility of interlaced scanning both vertically and horizontally at the same time. Built-in gamma correction that allows you to attach to the image the settings of its display so that on different monitors the image displayed exactly the same as on the author's screen. What kind of images should be saved in PNG format? The most common for PNG format is the tasks of storing graphics information with sharp boundaries, patterned drawings, text graphics, individual graphic elements (logos, ornaments, pictograms). In this guide will offer you 4 simple ways to batch convert several .PNG images to .JPG and vice-versa using Linux command-line tools. We will use convert command line tool in all the examples, however, you can as well make use of mogrify to achieve this. The syntax for using convert is: $ convert input-option input-file output-option output-file And for mogrify is: $ mogrify options input-file Note: With mogrify, the original image file is replaced with the new image file by default, but it is possible to prevent this, by using certain options that you can find in the man page. Below are the various ways to batch convert your all .PNG images to .JPG format, if you want to convert .JPG to .PNG, you can modify the commands according to your needs. 1. Convert PNG to JPG Using `ls' and `xargs' Commands The ls command allows you to list all your png images and xargs make it possible to build and execute a convert command from standard input to convert all .png images to .jpg. ----------- Convert PNG to JPG ----------- $ ls -1 *.png | xargs -n 1 bash -c 'convert "$0" "${0%.png}.jpg"' ----------- Convert JPG to PNG ----------- $ ls 1 *.jpg | xargs -n 1 bash -c 'convert "$0" "${0%.jpg}.png"' Explanation about the options used in the above command. -1 ? flag tells ls to list one image per line. -n ? specifies the maximum number of arguments, which is 1 for the case. -c ? instructs bash to run the given command. ${0%.png}.jpg ? sets the name of the new converted image, the % sign helps to remove the old file extension. Similarly, you can use above command to convert all your .jpg images to .png by tweaking the above command. 2. Convert PNG to JPG Using GNU `Parallel' Command GNU Parallel enables a user to build and execute shell commands from standard input in parallel. Make sure you have GNU Parallel installed on your system, otherwise install it using the appropriate commands below: $ sudo apt-get install parallel [On Debian/Ubuntu systems] $ sudo yum install parallel [On RHEL/CentOS and Fedora] Once Parallel utility installed, you can run the following command to convert all .png images to .jpg format from the standard input. ----------- Convert PNG to JPG ----------- $ parallel convert '{}' '{.}.jpg' ::: *.png ----------- Convert JPG to PNG ----------- $ parallel convert '{}' '{.}.png' ::: *.jpg Where, {} ? input line which is a replacement string substituted by a complete line read from the input source. {.} ? input line minus extension. ::: ? specifies input source, that is the command line for the example above where *png or *jpg is the argument. Parallel Command ? Converts All PNG Images to JPG Format Alternatively, you can as well use ls and parallel commands together to batch convert all your images as shown: ----------- Convert PNG to JPG ----------- $ ls -1 *.png | parallel convert '{}' '{.}.jpg' ----------- Convert JPG to PNG ----------- $ ls -1 *.jpg | parallel convert '{}' '{.}.png' 3. Convert PNG to JPG Using `for loop' Command To avoid the hustle of writing a shell script, you can execute a for loop from the command line as follows: ----------- Convert PNG to JPG ----------- $ bash -c 'for image in *.png; do convert "$image" "${image%.png}.jpg"; echo "image $image converted to ${image%.png}.jpg "; done' ----------- Convert JPG to PNG ----------- $ bash -c 'for image in *.jpg; do convert "$image" "${image%.jpg}.png"; echo "image $image converted to ${image%.jpg}.png "; done' Description of each option used in the above command: -c allows for execution of the for loop statement in single quotes. The image variable is a counter for number of images in the directory. For each conversion operation, the echo command informs the user that a png image has been converted to jpg format and vice-versa in the line $image converted to ${image%.png}.jpg". "${image%.png}.jpg" creates the name of the converted image, where % removes the extension of the old image format. for loop ? Convert PNG to JPG Format 4. Program worked as described. Wonderful no frills interface needed no training to use or understand. I had the job I wanted done completed within 2 minutes. I would recommend this in it's current version to anyone Bulk Image Converter v2.0.1.0 by slade73 on Win 7 64 This works great, exactly what I needed. I run a PC gaming website and game screenshots in Bitmap format are taking up hardcore amounts of space on the HDD. There are several thousands of Bitmap images, converting each file individually would take forever. With this Bulk Image Converter I can convert entire folders full with thousands of image files all at once! The only thing is in Windows 8.1 64bit, when I select let's say 7,000 Bitmap image files in a folder and get it to start converting to Jpeg, the Bulk Image Converter says "stopped responding", and in task manager it also shows it as not responding. BUT, it is running, no problem, you can see the HDD light flashing and high HDD activity it is converting perfectly, just give it some time, don't stop the process. When it finishes, it will notify you that it has completed. SuperComTech Admin Windows 8 transcodes all wallpapers that aren't png or bmp to ~60 quality jpg for no logical reason whatsoever (someone needs fired!), and this solved my problem in one click. Thanks we just noticed our project had color space issues with JPG images and we need to convert all our images to PNG. Worked perfectly all problems gone, thanks! Btw => download, doubleclick, GO without any installation ... i like that :) Wow. Being *barely* technology literate, I am impressed by how easy this was to use and how fast it processed the changes! I will be making a payment for you. While I appreciate 'free', I also believe in paying for someone for their expertise. Excellent program! Thanks for this project. Even though it's only 71 KB (which is a plus btw in the era where programs less than 1 MB are rare), it sure pack a punch an does it's job in a straightforward manner. I need a converter that can traverse whole sub directories and this one does the job perfectly. Maybe in future versions it can be made so that we can set the compression ratio of the output, but for me, it's still 5 stars for what it is now. This tiny program was PERFECT! So easy to find the directory, select the files and choose the output. Crammed a day's worth of work into a few seconds. No spam or irritating ads either! Free to use, but I just had to make a donation to the genius programmer. A must have for me - will use this in the future for sure! Very good program. Saved me a lot of time converting PNG files for my Delphi apps Thanks, this little Tool is great. :) 5 Stars from me Bulkimageconver is great! Thanks. This converter is simple and fast. Great job!
