We have a great past for which to be proud! We have a vital ministry in these present days. The risen Christ is calling us to a hope-filled future. Now, this Sunday, in a special service of song, word and prayer, we respond to these great gifts by making our pledges of commitment to the ongoing ministry of First Christian Church, Garland, in 2014. May God give each of us a willing heart of generosity. –Your Senior Pastor, Dan FOCUS ON GENEROSITY4851400889000Dr. Doug Skinner will be our guest speaker this Consecration Sunday, September 29th, preaching from Exodus 36:1-7 in a sermon entitled, “Whoever Is of a Willing Heart.” Doug is the Senior Minister at Northway Christian Church.? He has been preaching, teaching, offering pastoral care, casting vision to the church’s ministries, providing guidance to the staff and church leadership, and strategically planning for Northway’s future.Doug’s capable leadership has extended beyond Northway as he has served as the Moderator of the Christian Church in the Southwest and as the Vice Moderator of the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).? Doug has also served on a variety of local and church boards and task forces, and is heavily involved in the ecumenical partnership, Friendship Among Faiths.Doug holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from Northwest Christian College, a Masters of Divinity degree from Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.? Doug also has a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Pecos Benedictine Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico.A gifted preacher, teacher, and writer, Doug is the author of At the Lord’s Table: Communion Prayers for All Seasons.? He is also working on several new books with Chalice Press.Prior to coming to Northway, Doug served churches in Lubbock, Plainview, Houston, and Amarillo. Doug and his wife, Mary Lynn, have two adult children, Anna and Danny, and one grandchild.? When not at Northway, Doug likes to spoil his grandson, read books about history, go to the movies, participate in water aerobics, and follow baseball.HELP WANTEDThe church is actively looking for an adult to assist with operation of our sound system. The position requires work on Sunday mornings and some special events during the week. The cleaning will start at the front door of our church and work through to the back of the church. Cleaning will be concentrated on the sanctuary. We will continue the work day on February 8th at 9am. There is a box under the stairs for empty spray bottles. All donations can be placed in this box. Gospels as our primary and chief guide, using a harmony of the gospels (a book that puts gospel parallels together) to help us chronologically, methodically examine the Gospel story.? We’ll take as long as we want to look at details, words, or peculiar teachings, taking care to apply scriptural teachings to the daily challenges of Christian living.? On this day our chancel choir will sing two anthems and we will have an array of breads from around the world in celebration of Jesus Christ who is bread of the world. (John 6)First Christian Church Fall Festival, October 27thOur JYF, Chi Rho, and CYF youth groups are taking collections for the Fall Festival on Oct 27th from 5-7pm. In order to run our booths, we are requesting the following: Candy, Cakes and Baked Goods, Chili, Bingo Prizes (Gift Certificates, gift sets, movie passes.). Thank you for all of your support! Your donations help us fund our mission trip each year.?Tour to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum There will be a First Christian Church Group Tour to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum on October 21, 2013. We will meet at FCCG at 9am to ride on the bus. There are seven slots available if you want to ride on the bus.Cost: $3 for bus$9 for seniors (61 & older)$10 for adults$9 youth (13-17)$6 youth (5-12)?We will have lunch at Café 43 located at the museum. Cost is $7 and $12. If you plan to attend please give museum money to Sondra Martin by October 7th and place your name in one of the open slots on the sheet on the bulletin board.NTA Adult Mission TripOur NTA Outreach Chair, Debby Bobbitt, has arranged an Adult Mission Trip to Joplin, MO in December.? A flyer is on our bulletin board.? The cost is $75 which includes a $25 non-refundable deposit.? Accommodations are at the South Joplin Christian Church – bunk beds so bring sleeping bags or bedding.? Showers are at the church mission station.? There are also kitchen facilities with utensils and cookware and access to a laundry.? You arrive on Sunday, work Monday – Friday and leave on Saturday.? The theme of the Conference was “God can do anything!” The ladies heard many powerful speakers and some wonderful music.Called Board MeetingThere will be a called board meeting October 6th directly after the 9am worship service. At this meeting the items to be discussed will be expenditures for the A/C and the nominating committee.HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIRIt’s time to start thinking about our Holiday Craft Fair! On Saturday, December 7th from 9am-3pm, we will have multiple vendors selling their crafts and products. So far, we have Avon, Scentsy, handmade jewelry, baby quilts, and more! If you are interested in being a vendor or know someone who is interested, contact Rev. Allison Ray.OUTREACH MOMENTThe outreach ministry was able to meet our obligations to the North Texas Area, Disciples Crossing in Athens, TX.
