Pool Update - We Now have a HEATED Pool

Why not take advantage of our wonderful Southern California weather and take a dip in our newly Heated Pool? Just call any Board Member for a key and try it out. Not a member, yet? Call Natascha at (562) 440-2110 for a membership application (just $15/month), or go to and sign up on line!!

Since Lakewood Aquatics will be handling the swim lessons for LGCA there will be a lot of new faces around, so members will need to bring their LGCA Membership card with them when they come to the pool. This is to ensure that pool users are members and not outside persons or lapsed members “piggybacking” on someone who lets them in the front door. Remember, the clubhouse is for members in good standing. Lapsed members are not entitled to use the pool and/or clubhouse facilities.

Swim Lessons have begun.

Spring Swim Lesson Schedule: M-F 5pm – 7pm

LGCA members will receive $15 off monthly swim lesson fees if you show your LGCA membership card at the time you register with Lakewood Aquatics. For more information or to sign up for lessons, call Lakewood Aquatics at 562-370-0955 or visit

Check the LGCA website for the complete seasonal pool schedule.

We are currently planning for this year’s Fireworks Stand—our biggest fundraiser of the year! We’d love to have any interested volunteers help with the Fireworks Booth (you don’t have to be a member if you’d like to help.)

We currently need help in the following areas:

June 30th (Morning): Help unload the fireworks delivery and stock the stand.

July 1st – July 4th: Sell fireworks in the stand, 3-hr shifts from 8am all the way until 10pm are available. We need the most help on July 4th. (Correction: Must be at least 16 yrs. old to buy fireworks and 18 yrs. old to sell fireworks.)

We also need “sign wavers” to bring in sales from those driving by. Great job for teenagers and/or outgoing people! You get to wear silly 4th of July themed costumes!

July 4th (Evening): Help clean up after the fireworks stand closes for the night.

We will be having a Volunteer Orientation & Potluck in June at the clubhouse for those wanting to help. Please RSVP by calling Laura Havlik (626) 675-3097 if you would like to sign up! It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also a lot of fun! And you’d be helping a good cause and working with great people!

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”

– William Shakespeare

As part of the Fireworks Pre-Season, we plan on selling $20 SCRIP tickets redeemable at the LGCA Fireworks Stand when it opens!

Stay tuned for more information!![pic]

TIP OF THE MONTH

This is the month to take steps or being better prepared for an earthquake or other natural disaster. Remember to compile supply kits for your home, work and vehicles. Include in each of your kits enough food, water, clothing, medications, cash and First Aid supplies for all family members to survive for at least 7 days. Make sure you have an out-of-state contact person, as long distance calls may go through when local services are unavailable. Make sure neighbors know one another and are aware of any special needs and encourage them to practice their individual family disaster plans.

Upcoming Events

Please SLOWWWWW DOWN!

With longer daylight hours and school breaks, children are outside playing more often and may be out later in the day. So please be aware and drive the Speed Limit of 25 MPH in the neighborhood and watch out for kids playing in or near the street .. If you see a ball rolling out in to the street, STOP IMMEDIATELY! A small child may be running out to retrieve their ball and you may not see them in time to stop. Remember: Where there is a ball, there is a child.

Speeders who race down our streets pose a hazard to our neighborhood pedestrians, bicyclists, and children. As you drive around we ask that you consider those around you and keep your speed in mind. You won't get to your destination that much sooner, and there is more at risk than you can ever imagine.

When you come to a STOP SIGN, please come to a complete STOP. A rolling stop is just not safe.

Thank you for helping keep The Gardens safe for everyone.

Lakewood Gardens Civic Association

The St. Patrick’s Day Dinner was so much fun! The hall was decorated beautifully! The food (prepared by Chef Rudolph) was fantastic! The corned beef was prepared with a dry rub and smoked to perfection! The Shepard’s Pie was so good that I had to have seconds! And we had the absolute pleasure of enjoying an Irish Dance performance by Amada Skye Alexander! What a talented young lady!

The Lakewood Community Run had our first Team Lakewood Gardens group participate this year! Let’s make this an annual event for our team!

I’m so glad that the LGCA Craft Fair is on the same day as the Castana Ave. Block Sale (May 9th) since it will really increase the attendance for this event! We still have a few vendor spaces left so sign up before the April 29th deadline so if any of you are crafters, this is your chance to sell your wares and grow your customer/client list!!

Volunteers are always welcome for this year’s Fireworks Stand! Choose from set-up, sales, clean up, and/or “sign waver” positions. The stand is open from July 1st – July 4th. We will provide cold beverages and snacks for all volunteers during July 1st – July 4th. You can contact me at (626) 675-3097 or email me at PresidentLGCA@ to get on the schedule.

If you can’t volunteer but would still like to support us, why not come by and be a customer! LGCA members get 10% discount when you show your membership card! Our stand is located in the El Pollo Loco parking lot at the corner of Cherry Ave & Candlewood/Market St.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful…

If you are 30 years old or older you need to stop renting IMMEDIATELY!

Forget that homeownership is the American Dream .. Forget that you like where you live and you can afford it .. Forget that you are living with your parents and it’s free.

Otherwise; you can forget about having a pleasant retirement.

All the news  is out.  They’ve been telling us for years to save, to invest, and now that the economy has been in the dumps for the past 6 years it is more important than ever to Stop Renting.

Yep, another blog about Retirement, but with a twist.

If you cannot save, or your company doesn’t have a 401K, or you can’t afford to contribute to your 401K, or you have an IRA, or don’t have a huge inheritance coming to you then you need to buy property.  It can be your home or an investment property, but you need to “invest” in your retirement.  You have 30 yrs to pay for this investment.  An investment that grows over the years, that you have control over, that you can actually touch everyday, and will be there when you retire.

If you are young and can’t afford it on your own then get roommates,  get a second job!  When we are young we have all the time in the world.  I was young once, and then time started doing double time on me.  Look around at your family, parents, your friends parents.  When you were young they were doing great right?  Now what is happening?  Many don’t have any extra cash.  BUT they do have their home.  A home they have been paying on for 30 years, that can now pay them back.  See the thing is once you get older you don’t have time to “make-up” lost income, or lost stock market investments.  You’ve already put in your time, you are done!

It’s tough I know.  Jobs these days.  I’m talking about jobs where you work for someone else.  There are not a lot of jobs out there.  It’s hard to get full time work.  You can do it.  I see 55 yr olds who have not saved at all or not enough for retirement.  They wanted to retire at 65.  Well, for 7 in 10 households these people are going to have to work longer, much longer.  If they own a home and have diligently paid their mortgage every month without taking equity out of it like an ATM machine then they quite possible could have money for retirement.

Whether you rent or own you have to make a payment every month.  You can make it for 30 yrs if you own or you can make it for the rest of your life if you rent.  I have not heard of any landlords that will give you back your rent if you’ve loyally been paying him for 30yrs.

You don’t know what you can afford to buy until you sit down with a Mortgage Consultant, and put a plan in place.  So give us a call. It might not be this year, but set a goal of less than 3 yrs to purchase.  It’s an hour of your time today, but it could be how you live the rest of your life!
