OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students will a picture of Ellen and her husband William to predict what is going on in the picture. After all students read their predictions, they will read William Craft’s Running a Thousand Miles to Freedom.

PREPARATION PROCEDURES

Lesson Description

STUDENT OBJECTIVES

Students will work independently and answer the who, what, when, where and why questions about the picture of Ellen and William Craft.

 

PROCEDURES: SESSION 1

|1. |The teacher will introduce the lesson to students. He or she will explain the importance of using primary resources. Students should |

| |understand what a primary resource is. |

| |The teacher will explain that the picture from Smithsonian Magazine takes place during the period of slavery in the United States. |

|2. | Students will then be instructed to predict who these people are and what is going on in the picture. |

|3. |Each writing must answer the questions: who, what, when, where and why. All prediction writings will be collected |

 

PROCEDURES: SESSION 2

|1. |The teacher will begin by having students read their predictions. |

|2. |Students will then read the background information about the Crafts in Smithsonian Magazine and discuss their impressions of their |

| |predictions and the actual story. |

|3. |Teacher can then begin reading Walking a Thousand Miles to Freedom by William Craft. |

PROCEDURES: SESSION 3

|1. |You might want to break up your lesson and activities in different ways. This could be by sessions which occur on different days. You |

| |might want to break your lesson into introduction, warm-up, teacher modeling, guided practice, etc. Feel free to change your headings |

| |to something that is more appropriate. (For example, instead of listing this section as “Session 3,” you might want to list it as |

| |“Student Practice,” etc. |

EXTENSIONS / MODIFICATIONS

The reading assignment could be shortened to aid those who need accommodations. Instead of doing both readings, the students can just read the Smithsonian article or students can work in pairs to make predictions.

Extension: Students can read the book Walking a Thousand Miles and stop periodically at certain points to predict what will happen next.

 

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed by means of discussion and quiz.
