Girls hockey: Ridgefield edges Greenwich in state quarterfinals

Tuesday, 28 February 2012 18:17

Meghan Galloway's goal with 51.5 seconds left lifted the Ridgefield High girls hockey team to a 5-4 win over Greenwich in a state quarterfinal game Tuesday afternoon at the Winter Garden.

The Tigers were coming off a 4-3 loss to Greenwich in the FCIAC semifinals.

In Tuesday's game, Ridgefield took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Galloway and Lucy Wemyss.

Hannah Jeffrey scored to pull the Cardinals within one goal early in the second period, but Cara Lockwood answered for Ridgefield to make it 3-1. Jeffrey then scored again to trim the Tigers' lead to 3-2 going into the final period.

Anna Marcus's goal gave Ridgefield a 4-2 lead before Erin Ferguson and Jeffrey scored for Greenwich to tie the game at 4-4 with 2:53 left.

Galloway then got the game-winner off a scramble in front in the final minute.

Darien girls hockey erases two-goal deficit to earn tie at Ridgefield

RIDGEFIELD -- Regardless of the sport, ties often leave both teams feeling less than satisfied at game's end. To a certain extent, that was indeed the case for the Darien and Ridgefield girls hockey teams, which skated off the ice with a 2-2 tie Wednesday at the Winter Garden Arena in Ridgefield.

On the other hand, the tie was a result of Darien erasing a 2-0 second period deficit, so this one may have felt a bit better the average tie for the Blue Wave.

"We just kept it together, came back and they weren't able to get one on in, so it's good," said Darien goalie Shannon Hall, who made 10 saves. "Playing these tough games makes us better as a team. We don't want to have easy games; we want to have games that challenge us."

Each team had several opportunities at a potential game-winning goal in the extra frame, but Ridgefield goalie Heather Ogden and Hall were up to the task of keeping their respective teams alive.

With 12 seconds remaining Ridgefield's Cara Lockwood came as close as anyone to netting the sudden death goal, but Hall denied two consecutive short-range shots before covering the puck.

"As a goalie, you want to react; you don't want to think too much. If you over-think, you can mess up, so I was just reacting," Hall said. "I knew I had to get there and I stopped it."

With 2:23 remaining in overtime, Darien's Ellie Bennett appeared to score the game-winning goal after her shot bounced high off the blocker pad of Ogden and narrowly stayed out of the net. However, a penalty shot was awarded to Bennett after a Ridgefield player covered the puck in the crease. Ogden came up big with a save on the penalty shot.

Prior to the tense eight-minute overtime period, Ridgefield opened the scoring when Anna Marcus sent a long pass to Kerry Sheehan-Delany, springing her on a breakaway. Sheehan-Delany made some nifty moves and got the puck past Hall for a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game.

On the powerplay early in the second period, Ridgefield's Megan Galloway sent a quick pass to Lockwood, who blasted a one-time slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle for a 2-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Darien cut its deficit in half on a goal by Bennett. Controlling the puck behind the Ridgefield net, Sara Shaker got the puck in front to Bennett. With her back to the net, Bennett backhanded a no-look shot past Ogden to get the Blue Wave on the board.

"After we made a few adjustments, we carried the momentum. I think the scales were tipped to our side after we made those adjustments," Darien coach Al Gurney said. "We played well, we stepped up and they're a good hockey team. We wanted to gain some momentum from this game, carry into Saturday and carry it into (the FCIAC playoffs) next week."

With 2:52 remaining in the middle stanza, Darien pulled even on a stuff-in goal by Shaker.

"We had our lapses in the second period, but in the third period we definitely improved. Obviously, any overtime is going to be intense," Ridgefield's Missy Hutchings said. "We played Fairfield, then Wilton and then Darien, so it's kind of been a step up every time and I think it's preparing us for the playoffs. I think if we can get some more shots, we can capitalize on more of them."

Hutchings was alluding to the shot totals for each team in which Darien held a 25-12 advantage.

The tie left both teams with matching 9-3-1 FCIAC records, but due to Ridgefield's 4-1 win over Darien on Jan. 12, the Tigers would hold the tiebreaker over the Blue Wave if the two teams finish the regular season with the same record. Both teams are already in the FCIAC playoffs, but the No. 4 seed -- Darien, Ridgefield or 10-4 Greenwich -- will have to open against New Canaan, which is unbeaten in FCIAC play.

Darien closes out its regular season at the Darien Ice Rink against New Canaan on Saturday at 8:40 p.m.

Ridgefield ends its regular season by playing host to Staples at the Winter Garden Ice Arena on Thursday at 3:50 p.m.

Curnan, Kurnan, Curnan...whoever she is, she is a TIGER!!!

RIDGEFIELD -- As one of the youngest members of a Ridgefield girls hockey team that's done its fair share of lamp lighting nine games into the 2011-12 season, sophomore forward Katie Curnan has grown accustomed to the role of cheerleader.

Wednesday, Kurnan found herself the recipient of a pair of celebratory group clenches for once, her reward for crashing the net to clean up after her high-scoring teammates.

The second of two second-chance goals to come off Kurnan's stick in the second period against Wilton served as the game-winner in a 4-2 Tigers triumph at Winter Garden that wasn't quite that close.

With four straight wins in the wake of their only two defeats, the Tigers (7-2) are a confident bunch top to bottom.

"Usually I'm the one cheering on my teammates," Kurnan said. "It was nice to contribute. My teammates are really skilled, so I was just looking to get myself in position for a rebound."

Forced into second line duty by an injury to senior tri-captain Allie Schiffer, Kurnan said the Tigers might have struggled initially with chemistry before finding their stride. Leading 1-0 on Dana Cerone's goal late in the first period and dominating possession, Kurnan's putbacks appeared to put the game away.

"We really got a boost from our second group out there today," said Tigers coach Paul Fabbri. "(Katie's performance came) out of nowhere. She doesn't play regularly but she's played in spots and she hustles all the time. She's got a good motor. She's feisty."

After the Tigers stretched their lead to 4-0 on Melissa Hutchings' goal early in the third, it was the Warriors who proved feisty. Despite getting outshot 27-6 for the game, the Warriors made a couple of their offerings count. Madison Hendry and Perri Blicht scored consecutive goals for Wilton to cut the deficit in half. Their efforts, combined with the netminding of Vanessa Pagano (whom Fabbri lauded as one of the state's best), made for an interesting finish.

For the Warriors, a relatively young group, skating with the Tigers was yet another measuring stick.

"The effort in the third says a lot about our character," said Warriors coach Kerry Leonard. "We talked about bringing that intensity from the start. (Ridgefield) is one of the better teams in the league. We're building our confidence, and the nice part is we get to see these teams again."

Ridgefield rallies in third to beat Greenwich

David Fierro, Staff Writer

GREENWICH -- With the score tied near the midway point of the third period and his team about to take a faceoff against Greenwich High, Ridgefield girls ice hockey coach Paul Fabbri opted to call an early timeout and set up a play.

"Our players had been out there for two or three minutes, so we thought it was our opportunity to take a timeout and a chance for us to cash in," Fabbri said. "We put them where they wanted to be on the ice and we hoped they would execute."

Did they ever.

On the power play, the Tigers scored on a set play off the faceoff, as forward Cara Lockwood blasted a slap off a cross ice pass from Anna Marcus inside the left post, giving Ridgefield a 4-3 comeback win in a well-played FCIAC matchup at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.

"We couldn't have dialed it up any better," Fabbri said. "They were where they wanted to be on that play and did it on their own, which is what you expect from veteran players."

Though disappointed, Greenwich (1-1, 1-1 FCIAC) exited the game knowing it gave one of the premier teams in the league all it could handle.

"We really battled hard," Cardinals first-year coach Brett Farson said. "It's a good sign early in the season that we were in a close game against a strong team like Ridgefield. Tip your hat to Ridgefield, they played a good third period and won the game off a set play off a faceoff after taking a timeout. That's good coaching."

On the power play, the Tigers' winning goal off the faceoff was initiated by Cerone, who moved the puck to Marcus. Open on the left wing was Lockwood, who received the pass and beat Cardinals sophomore goalie Dart Freccia stick side, putting the visitors ahead, 4-3 with 8:06 remaining.

"Anna made a real clean pass to me and set me up for a good opportunity," said Lockwood, who applied plenty of pressure in the Cardinals' zone throughout. "After being behind, we were able to calm down and play like we normally do in the third period."

Trailing 2-1 after the first period, Greenwich came out like a team on a mission in the second. Displaying crisp puck movement, the Cards outshot the Tigers 7-3 and seized a 3-2 edge. Junior forward Ciel McDermid knocked a rebound past goalie Heather Ogden at the 6:58 mark of the second period, evening the score at 2-2. Senior forward and tri-captain Hannah Jeffrey put the home team in front, 3-2, stealing a pass deep in the Tigers' zone before flicking a wrist shot past Ogden with 3:48 to go in the second period.

"That was a big comeback for us," Jeffrey said. "We showed that we weren't going to give up in this game."

Goals from Allie Schiffer and Cerone gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage 8:57 into the opening period. Skating down the left side, Schiffer dropped the puck off to Vindhya Rao, whose shot deflected off Freccia's pads. Skating hard to the goal, the opportunistic Schiffer knocked in the rebound with 6:30 remaining in the first period. Cerone's goal came 27 seconds later off a slap shot. Senior Meghan Spezzano, who centers the first line, gave the Cards momentum, tallying on a rebound off a shot from freshman Madeline Graves, cutting the Tigers' lead to 2-1 with 2:08 to go in the opening period. Behind the aggressive play of Spezzano, Jeffrey, McDermid, Erin Ferguson and Skylar Jayes, Greenwich carried the play the majority of the second period.

Spezzano saw some action on defense, as Cardinals junior defenseman Caroline Lee tweaked her knee in the third period.

"We were short on defense, but we all stepped up," Spezzano said. "There are a lot of positives to take out of this game. We stayed together as a team and showed a lot of communication. I feel like every time we play Ridgefield it's a close game."

Lockwood's shot in the 5-hole knotted the score at 3-3 4:56 into the final period.

"Greenwich is a very good team and I thought they wanted it more for a couple of periods," Fabbri said. "But we responded in the third period and played defense the way we are capable of playing."

Freccia was solid in goal, making 18 saves, while Ogden stopped 12 shots for the Tigers.

"There were certain plays in the game in which they were a little bit more disciplined, so that will be our focus in practice," Jeffrey said. "We definitely had some great moments. We just have to fine tune our mistakes."

Said McDermid: "We put up a really good fight and we communicated well for the most part. Although we lost this gives us a lot of hope."

Fast start for RHS girls hockey team

Written by Tim Murphy

Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:52

It took all of two days for the Ridgefield High girls hockey team to make an impression.

Controlling play from the opening face-off both times, the Tigers began the 2011-12 season with a pair of victories over co-op squads on back-to-back days last week.

The Tigers defeated Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe, 5-2, in the season opener last Friday afternoon in Bridgeport and then added a 7-2 triumph over North Haven/Amity/Cheshire on Saturday night at the Winter Garden.

“We looked good in both games,” said Ridgefield head coach Paul Fabbri. “We were able to dictate play from the first period on.”

Dana Cerone had two goals and linemate Cara Lockwood contributed two assists in Ridgefield’s win over Warde/Ludlowe.

The Tigers led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second period.

Freshman Kerry Sheehan-Delaney, who is playing with Cerone and Lockwood on Ridgefield’s top line, added her first varsity goal, while Vindyha Rao and Maggie McSpedon also scored for the Tigers.

Allie Schiffer, Erica Guider and Rao added assists.

“The combo of Dana Cerone and Cara Lockwood is so dangerous, and Kerry Sheehan-Delaney is a skilled player who is going to benefit from playing on that line,” said Fabbri. “Getting goals from the second group (Rao, Schiffer and McSpedon) was encouraging. That’s what we need to be successful.”

Ridgefield goalie Heather Ogden finished with 17 saves.

On Saturday night, Lockwood and Sheehan-Delaney each had four points as the Tigers routed North Haven in the home opener at the Winter Garden.

North Haven lost in the Connecticut Girls Hockey League championship game to Simsbury last season and also reached the state semifinals before falling to eventual champ New Canaan, which beat Ridgefield in the finals.

“They had a very good season last year but their coach told me they were in a rebuilding pattern this year,” said Fabbri. “But I was still thrilled with the win and how we played.”

Lockwood had three goals and an assist while Sheehan-Delaney added one goal and three assists.

Megan Galloway, Schiffer and freshman Isabelle Stafford had the other Ridgefield goals.

Cerone had two assists and Rao, Lucy Weymss, Missy Hutchings and Anna Marcus added one assist apiece.

Ogden had 15 saves as Ridgefield defensemen Hutchings, Guider, Marcus and Galloway limited North Haven’s shots on goal.

ls hockey preview: Tigers have pieces to be post-season factor

Written by Tim Murphy

Tuesday, 06 December 2011 12:40

By reaching the state finals for the first time, the Ridgefield High girls hockey team made sure the 2010-11 season was among the better in program history.

Take away New Canaan and it might have been the best.

The Tigers finished 14-8-1 last season, with four of the losses coming to New Canaan. Those defeats included setbacks in the FCIAC semifinals and the state finals.

But with nearly all of its top players back, Ridgefield looks poised to be a post-season contender again this winter. That could mean more showdowns with New Canaan.

“We’ll be solid,” said Ridgefield head coach Paul Fabbri, whose team opens the season Friday at Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe. “Rachael Morrison is a significant graduation loss, but we have a lot of skilled players returning and some good freshmen.”

Morrison finished second on the team with 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) and leaves a big hole on the first line, which otherwise returns intact with senior wing Cara Lockwood (25 goals, 13 assists) and junior center Dana Cerone (nine goals, 12 assists). Lockwood and Cerone should be two of the state’s most dangerous forwards this season.

“They are both very good players,” said Fabbri. “With those two on the ice we are a threat to score at any time.”

Morrison’s loss will be minimized if promising freshman Kerry Sheehan-Delany can become an immediate contributor.

“She has a lot of ability,” said Fabbri. “She should fit right in on that top line.”

The Tigers will also benefit from a second line that figures to be superior to that of most other teams. Senior Allie Schiffer (three goals, eight assists) will be the center for sophomore wings Vindhya Rao (four goals, eight assists) and Maggie McSpedon (two goals, three assists). Freshman Lucy Wemyss could also see time on that unit.

Seniors Julie Pierandri, Brenna Courtney and Caitlin DeBartolo and sophomores Erica Ely and Katie Curnan provide enough quality depth for Ridgefield to skate three forward lines in certain games.

The Tigers also appear strong on defense with the return of senior Missy Hutchings, junior Anna Marcus and sophomores Erica Guider (seven goals, nine assists) and Megan Galloway. Freshman Isabel Stafford could also contribute on the backline.

“The defense has looked really good during the pre-season,” said Fabbri. “We have skilled players back there who can also join in offensively.”

Although last year’s primary starter in goal, Jen James, has graduated, Ridgefield looks set with the tandem of senior Maggie Philbin and sophomore Heather Ogden.

“They are both capable goalies,” said Fabbri. “They both saw time last year and have gotten better.”

For the Tigers to win post-season titles this season, Fabbri knows his team will likely have to break through against New Canaan.

“They have Olivia Hompe, who is the state’s top player, back, so they have to be considered the favorites,” he said. “But I think we have the ability to play with them as long as everything comes together for us. I like our team a lot.”
