Higher fines for not chaining up

Commercial truckers will now face higher fines for not carrying chains when required, as well as not installing them during mandatory chain ups on BC highways. Drivers will now be fined $196 for not carrying chains when and where required, and $598 for not installing chains during mandatory chain ups.

These fines will go into effect Oct. 1, 2019, when winter tire and chain-up regulations begin on most B.C. highways.

Watering restrictions relaxed

Late last week, the City relaxed its watering restrictions. Residents are now permitted to water up to 3 days per week, based on civic address. Odd numbered houses are permitted to water on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, and even numbered homes permitted to water on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Watering times are from 6-8am & 7-10pm. Those with automatic sprinkler systems are encouraged to water between midnight & 4am.

Washing cars and hand watering using a controlled flow nozzle is permitted at any time.

Barring a significant change in the weather pattern, all watering restrictions will be removed on September 30, in accordance with the City's Outdoor Watering Conservation policy.

"I am thrilled to see rain", said Mayor Linda Brown, "Though there was plenty of water in our aquifers, it was extremely concerning to see such limited flow in the Coldwater River. Whether it be flood or drought, water management will continue to be a priority for this Council".

Public info meeting: Effectiveness of watering restrictions

Through this process, the City received many questions about the effectiveness of watering restrictions, the health of our aquifers, and the actions that were being taken by water users outside the City of Merritt.

We understand the impetus for these questions and have arranged a meeting on October 1, 6pm at City Hall where Council will be discussing these questions and other groundwater matters with experts from the Fraser Basin Council, & Min. of Forests, Lands, Nat. Resource Operations, & Rural Devlt.
