the back country' The BC Wildfire Service has closed 230 rec sites & trail systems in the Cariboo Fire District, but is also encouraging people to stay out of the back country across the province. They are still assessing an official back country closure, but no decision has yet been made on that.

As of yesterday, there were 188 fires throughout BC, with 16 new ones overnight Wednesday. That, happily, is trending down from last weekend. Total fires since Apr. 1 is 613, with 111,000 hectares burned. Just the Wildfire Service alone has spent $66.6 million on fire suppression, but that does not reflect expenditures by other agencies.

More than 3100 personnel -- firefighters, support staff & contractors -- are in the forests, including 392 out-of-town personnel. 178 aircraft are also at work, not including military equipment.

In our area yesterday, the Ashcroft Reserve fire had grown to 11,500 hectares. The Princeton fire was at 2700 hectares and 10% contained.

There was a break in the weather these last couple days with lighter winds that helped firefighters. But forecasters are watching the weekend, when a cold front is expected to come through, causing significant winds. Smoke advisory is still on.
