TheStreet Ratings' Top 45 Dividend Picks

With risk-free U.S. Treasury securities and bank certificates of deposit generating virtually no return, investors are taking another look at dividend paying common stocks in order to generate income. As not all dividend paying stocks are created equal TheStreet Ratings' screens the universe of dividend paying stocks to select the best investment candidates for your further consideration.

Here are the criteria for assembling the stocks in our Dividend Select screen:

Dividend yield for the stock must be greater than that of the S&P 500, currently near 2%. After all, why risk owning individual stocks when an index could generate a better level of income.

Each listed stock has a dividend payout ratio less than 60%. This helps to eliminate REITs and MLPs, which are required to pay out a majority of their earnings.

As judged by our model, a stock must have at least moderate financial strength, show the ability to meet overall debt requirements, and have above-average returns on capital over time to make our Dividend Select list. These stocks must also be sufficiently liquid with a quick ratio above 1 and have a market capitalization above $1 billion to eliminate most smallcapitalization stocks.

Lastly, Dividend Select stocks must have earned a `Buy' recommendation, based on ratings from TheStreet Ratings' unbiased stock model. All of the stocks on the list are rated in the `Buy' range of A+ to B-.
