For any UW student, living on or off campus, The Ave is a great place to hang out, grab a bite to eat, or go shopping. On the way to The Ave, point out the bus stops (on Campus Parkway, 15th, and The Ave) and explain where they go and how to use your UPASS.15TH and Campus Pkwy: 43, 44, 48, 49, 70, 167, 197, 271, 541, 542, 556, 58612th and Campus Parkway: 31, 32, 49. 70, 83The Ave: 45, 71, 73, 83, 373As you are heading toward 42nd, point out some of the restaurants and tell them about your favorite restaurants and foods (pho, gyros, burgers, etc. )On the corner of 42nd, point out the copy centers (RAM and Professional) and tell them that some of their classes will require course packs from these locations. On the corner of 43rd, there is the U-District Post office. If you are sending packages, need stamps, etc. then this is the closes location to campus for those services. Halfway between 43rd and 45th, point out some of your favorite locations. Next, stop by the Bookstore. Visit the Tech Center and mention the Buy Back program, Comparison Shopping online, and the 10% Rebate. On 45th, point out Wells Fargo and explain where other bank locations are. (US Bank in the Bookstore, Bank of America on 47th, Chase on 45th, Wells Fargo on 45th, as well as 41st.)As you cross 45th, tell them about other great restaurants not on the The Ave (Qdoba, Quiznos, Kyoto Teriyaki, Mama Melina’s, Cedar’s, etc.)The closest grocery store is the Safeway on Brooklyn & 50th. There is a Bartell’s and Walgreens in the area also. Trader Joe’s, QFC, and Whole Foods are not too far away either. End up at Yeti Yogurt for a nice treat! Other Places to Visit Not in the Tour:U-VillageU Village is an upscale outdoor shopping center. It has dozens of high end shops, restaurants, and cafés. Stores and Shops: Free People, Madewell, Pandora, H&M, Coastal, Gap, Apple Store, Sony Style, Kheil’s, Lululemon The North Face, Banana Republic, Crate & Barrel, Sole Food, InSpa, Victoria’s Secret, and Sephora. Restaurants in the village include Specialty’s Café & Bakery, The Ram, Johnny Rockets, Delfino’s Pizzaria, Zao Noodle Bar, Sonrisa, Blu C Sushi, and Jamba Juice. (there are also 4 Starbucks locations) Just a walk down the viaduct or a stroll from the IMA will take you to UVillage. Just a few blocks from the Ave on 50th and Roosevelt is Scarecrow Video. They have a huge collection of films, including documentaries, foreign films, and independent films. This store isn’t your regular Blockbuster.Sundance Cinemas (9th and 45th), Neptune Theatre (45th and Brooklyn), Varsity Theatre (Ave and 45th): The Sundance houses several new films year round with 10 screens. The Neptune closed as a single-screen movie house in January 2011 and is now operated as a concert venue by the Seattle Theatre Group. The Varsity Theatre features an eclectic mix of Hollywood favorites, independent film and foreign language cinema. Fun Facts!:The University District Farmer’s Market is open Saturdays year-round, 9am to 2pm, at the corner of University Way & NE 50th, in the playground of the University Heights Center for the Community. You can find some of the freshest fruits and vegetables, organic foods, and fun gifts to give! The Ave got its name because it was formerly called 14th Avenue before they changed it to University Way.Blue Scholars wrote a song called “The Ave.” The members are former UW students. In May, The Ave is blocked off for a U-District Street Fair. There are tons of food and gift vendors, live music, and comedic and magician acts.
