Making Beats - Rutherford House

Making Beats

This week we are concentrating on how to make beats, looking at the detail of what makes a good beat in different styles as well as getting used to using software to create music.

We are going to go through a series of lessons designed by the makers of Ableton Live software, which is used by professional producers and DJs to create all different kinds of music.

Go to the following page:

The lesson starts with a game to get you warmed up, mixing different loops to create some dance music.

Feel free to play with this for as long as you want, it is a good introduction to live looping.

When you are ready, click the next button to start learning about how to create your own beats.

There are really good instructions on each page to explain how to develop your beat-making skills, so I won't repeat them here. You can take your time over each task, and there is no need to try and complete all the tasks in one day.

Your aim is to work through all the 10 "chapters" on Making A Beat.

The last chapter in the beat section is called Play With Beats, and this is where you can freestyle, creating a beat in whatever style you choose. When you have something you like, you can take a picture of it to show what you came up with and share it on ClassDojo. You could even share a video of your beat playing!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
