The Catcher in the Rye Final Projects

Literature Circle Creative Project Options

Movie Promo

Consider the action/events in the novel, as well as the important themes. Who would star in it? What would be the tone (i.e. humorous, sad, action-packed, etc.)? Then, create a two-part promotional campaign for the film.

• One part of the promotion should be a trailer for the movie. The purpose of a trailer is to show the viewer exciting and important snippets from the film without giving away the story. You want people to come see it, so how will you go about creating something that people will want to see? Your trailer should contain a minimum of five small “scenes” and should include narration in the style of those you see on television and at the movies.

• The second part of your movie promo is a movie poster. The poster should be “poster-sized” and should capture the spirit of the novel (film). How will this visual sell the novel (film)? How does it represent what the novel (film) is about? Use the themes, plot, and emotional responses elicited from the novel as your inspiration. Include at least two powerful quotations from the novel to entice readers/viewers.

• All group members must be active participants in the trailer and contribute to the poster.

Children’s Book

Your novel choice is for mature readers for a variety of reasons (language, drinking, smoking, adult themes). Your task is to rewrite the novel as a children’s book, complete with illustrations. In order to do this, you will need to focus on the important aspects of the novel (themes, symbols, character interactions) and include them in a child-friendly version of the story. You may write the story in first person or third person.

• Distinguish important action from trivial, and follow the story from beginning to end, introducing characters and places as you go. Include dialogue in simplistic form, slang, etc.

• Remember to include important action/symbols from the novel.

• Each group member must author and illustrate at least two pages in the book.

Music Soundtrack

Create a soundtrack that captures the major themes of the novel or one that focuses on the chapter action.

If you would rather focus on plot than theme, select at least ten chapters from the novel and give each a title. Then, compile songs that reflect the content of the chapters. You may either write your own lyrics for each “song”, or you may find songs already in existence that fit with particular aspects of the novel. If you choose to find songs, their connection to the novel must be obvious. In addition, you will include the lyrics of each song and an explanation of how the song ties in with the chapter or theme from the novel that you are representing. Each group member should contribute at least two songs to the soundtrack with lyrics and explanations.

Your finished product should contain:

• a recorded CD (if you are not using your own lyrics)

• a jacket insert complete with titles and lyrics for each song (10 song minimum)

• a cover that reflects the content of your album/soundtrack

• anything else you feel might add to the creativity and comprehensiveness of your soundtrack

Scene Study

Act out five separate scenes from your novel that are linked by a unifying idea (i.e. one of the themes). Film your “movie clips” to be presented in one video. Choose this project only if you have access to (and are allowed to use) video equipment at home. Be sure to indicate the theme you are presenting and that it is obvious what scenes you are acting out. Include with your video a script that outlines the themes and the action you are presenting. Also include an explanation of how the themes are evident in each scene. The more creative, the better! All group members must be active participants in the videos and contribute to the explanations of the themes and scenes.

Poetry

Capture the novel in poetic form. Compile a reflection of poetry that focuses on different themes or scenes in the novel. Your collection should contain a minimum of two poems per group member, each focusing on a different theme/idea. Each poem should be a minimum of 16 lines, and each must contain identifying characteristics/ideas from the novel. You may change poetic style/format if you wish, but all should be reflective of the literature.

Visual Interpretation

Create an “Action Map” that details all of the main events in the story in pictorial form. Create a “Start” and a “Finish”, and add visual representations of events into a detailed map of story events. Include pictures of people, places, and events that are significant. Your map should not contain any blank space, and should include ALL of the main events in the novel.

Quilt

Story Quilt—Each group member must complete two quilt squares. Talk to each other so no one is covering the same scene, event, character, chapter, or theme.

1. Choose a key scene, main event, character, chapter, or theme to illustrate.

2. Squares can be made from construction or copy paper cut into a square 8 x 8 inches.

3. Draw a draft of the quilt square on scratch paper. This will help plan the spacing and arrangement of the visual and written responses.

4. Around the edges of the square, draw a one-inch border. Each individual square can have its own border, or you can agree on a similar border for the whole group.

5. Inside the border create your illustration. Include a sentence or two explaining the significance of the illustration, and include a quote directly from the book that supports the illustration.

6. Your quilt will need a square with the title of the book and author. One person can do this, or you can do it as a group.

7. Each group will present its quilt to the class. Each group member will explain his/her own square.

8. If your group needs an additional square to even out the quilt, you can create an extra one as a group. Another option is to create a square for the title of the book and a separate square for the author.
