2019 ICM Contest

2019 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling? Press Release--April 19, 2019

COMAP is pleased to announce the results of the 21st annual Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM). This year 11262 teams representing institutions from fifteen countries/regions participated in the contest. Nineteen teams were designated as OUTSTANDING representing the following schools:

Central University of Finance and Economics, China (2) (INFORMS Award & COMAP Scholarship Award 1916704)

Chongqing University, China Duke University, NC, USA

(Leonhard Euler Award & COMAP Scholarship Award) Emory University, GA, USA Lanzhou University of Technology, China Nanjing University, China Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, China Northeastern University, China Renmin University of China, China Seattle Pacific University, WA, USA Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, China (2)

(Vilfredo Pareto Award 1916375) Sun Yat-Sen University, China United States Military Academy, NY, USA

(Rachel Carson Award) University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, China University of Virginia, VA, USA (INFORMS Award) Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University, China Xi'an Jiaotong University, China (INFORMS Award)

This year's contest ran from Thursday, January 24 to Monday, January 28, 2019. During that time, teams of three students researched, modeled, and wrote a solution to an open-ended interdisciplinary modeling problem. The 2019 ICM was an online contest, where teams registered and obtained contest materials through COMAP's ICM Website.

ICM teams chose one of the following three problems: The D Problem involved developing an emergency evacuation model for the Louvre Museum to explore options to evacuate visitors from the museum, while also allowing emergency personnel to enter the building. Teams had to identify potential bottlenecks that could limit movement towards the exits. The E Problem asked teams to create an ecological services valuation model to understand the costs of land use projects. The model helped to perform a cost benefit analysis of land use development projects

of varying sizes, from small community-based projects to large national projects. The F Problem sought to identify the viability and effects of a global decentralized digital currency model that could identify key factors impacting the currency's growth, access, security, and stability at individual, national, and global levels. For all three problems, teams searched for pertinent data and grappled with how phenomena internal and external to the system needed to be considered and measured. The student teams produced creative and relevant solutions to these complex questions and built models to handle the tasks assigned in the problems. The problems also required data analysis, creative modeling, and scientific methodology, along with effective writing and visualization to communicate their teams' results in a 20-page report. A selection of the Outstanding solution papers will be featured in The UMAP Journal, along with commentaries from the problem authors and judges. This year's judges remarked that due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the problems, teams solved these problems using a variety of methods and tools. This allowed teams to showcase their strengths in many diverse areas including information science, geography, economics, finance, optimization, networks, ecology, environmental sciences, public policy, and simulations.

ICM is associated with COMAP's Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), which was held during the same weekend. ICM is designed to develop interdisciplinary problem-solving skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and the humanities, as well as competence in data science and written communication. Over the years the ICM problem topics have included environmental science, biology, chemistry, resource management, operations research, information science, public health, and network science. Each team is expected to include team members from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary interests in applied problem solving and modeling. To obtain additional information and a listing of all the team designations, please visit the ICM Website at: .

Major start-up funding for the ICM was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation (through Project INTERMATH) and COMAP. Additional support is provided by The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). COMAP's Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling are unique among modeling competitions in that students work in teams to find a solution. Centering its educational philosophy on mathematical modeling, COMAP uses mathematical tools to explore real-world problems. It serves the educational community as well as the world of work by preparing students to become better informed--and prepared--citizens, consumers, workers, and community leaders.
