Students will experiment with various forms. Students will write daily in class. Class activities will include reading models of professional writing, writing from a variety of prompts, reading personal compositions to the class, and commenting on the compositions of others. Success in this class will depend on the ability to synthesize techniques studied in class with original thinking, employing the necessary grammar, usage, and punctuation to make the composition clear and precise. Each student will compile a portfolio of his work. General Expectations Since this is a creative process class, students will strive to do the following:read a wide range of good works to serve as models for best crafting practices;write daily practicing the writing genre of the six week term;think critically and differently about the creative writing process and raise relevant questions and perspectives that allow insight into writing development and problem solving;participate with maturity and insight in peer editing and writing discussions, paying consistent attention to the comments of others, offering questions, and constructive criticism.Mission StatementThrough creative writing students will learn to communicate theme (statements about life) using figurative language in various genres including poetry, short story and drama.Required Supplies: DUE DATE: September 11, 2017Blue/Black ink pens DAILYLoose-leaf wide-ruled notebook paperComposition book or notebook1 ream of white copy paper1000 Most Important Words by Norman Schur - FIRST SIX WEEKS 9/11/17Classroom Management PlanBe on time and dressed in appropriate school dress code attire. Students missing a bell ringer or warm up must report to after school tutoring. Students will be given at least two days for every day missed to complete the assignments or tests missed after an absence. It is your responsibility to obtain makeup work from tutorial, class blog site, or classmate immediately upon return from an absence. Daily makeup assignments must be turned in promptly. Makeup Exams must be taken during tutoring hours by appointment within a one-week timeframe.Re-Test Policy: To ensure that test grades reflect content mastery, a student will be permitted to retake any major test that he failed within five school days of the date of the failing grade was earned or no later than ten days of the date of the test. If the test is passed on the second attempt, the failing grade will be removed from the grade book, and the passing grade will be recorded. Late Work Not Related To An Absence: Students must be given at least one opportunity to submit late work not related to an absence. Late work will receive a 10-POINT deduction for each school day late (whether class meets or not). After 40, have accrued, the work may not be accepted and an “F” grade is earned. THIS POLICY IS FIRM.Extra Credit may be offered in addition to, but never INSTEAD of, assigned work. If a student is failing the class, extra credit will NOT be an option. EC is designed to enhance performance, not substitute the work.Ongoing Assignments:Academic Journal – students are required to keep a notebook of quick writes, response to literature prompts, and literary notes focusing on a particular element or skill students are expected to learn.
