English 305 Essay #3---The Research Paper Spring 2014

The Assignment: Because it is always more fun to tackle a subject in which we have some interest, you may choose the topic for your Research Paper. Keep in mind your essay must not simply report on an issue, but be written in the form of an argument.

Therefore, choose an issue with clearly opposing points of view which allows you to take a position in your thesis statement. Certain topics are not acceptable for this assignment including: abortion, the death penalty, gun control and legalizing drugs.

Suggestions: Find an issue you wish to research in depth, avoiding any you have already formed an opinion about unless you can be completely objective and willing to change your mind. You must discuss all aspects of the issue in your essay, especially those contrary to your own. Since your essay must present opposing sides, do not concentrate only on finding evidence to support your point of view. Complex issues rarely have simplistic answers. Present necessary background information in a brief introduction; then state your opinion in a clear thesis. [Consult Structure Argument Usually Takes handout]

Guidelines:

• Essays must be 5-6 pages---not including a Works Cited page.

• Quote from a minimum of five outside credible sources.

• Introduce and cite sources using MLA format.

• See KW: 237-38 for a sample Works Cited page.

Sources: On Wednesday, March 19 we will meet in Oviatt Library for a lecture on accessing the library’s databases to find articles in scholarly journals, books, newspapers,

and periodicals. Cite sparingly----about two quotes per page is sufficient. The essay should not be a collection of passages from other writers, but an analysis of sources in your own words. Although you may cite from legitimate/credible Internet sites, anonymous sources such as Wikipedia do not count toward your minimum credible source. See KW: 133-35 for evaluating sources especially Web Sites.
