CRIME STATISTICS SCAVENGER HUNT

Use the UCR and other credible websites to find the following information below. Be sure to include a print out of any charts and data used as well as your sources. Type or handwrite your information into a word document and print out before you leave.

1. List at least 3 characteristics of the UCR. (What does it do? How is it used? Where does the info come from?)

2. Each of you where assigned either Violent Crime or Property

Crime:

a. Provide a brief definition of your category.

b. Explain how the data was collected.

c. A couple of brief statements from the overview.

d. An explanation of the trend, if applicable.

e. A hypothesis that you believe addresses the trend.

3. Within each of these two categories, there are four offenses listed. Pick one offense and gather the following data:

a. Brief definition of the offense

b. Brief overview of the offense

c. national data and brief analysis of what the information could mean

d. comparing two regions or one state with another and brief analysis of what the information could mean

e. local and brief analysis of what the information could mean

f. data on race, sex, and age and brief analysis of what the information could mean

g. any trends and brief analysis of what the information could mean

4. Pick one of the following countries to compare your data. If you would like to use a different one, you must obtain teacher permission. Before you start gathering information, make a general hypothesis about what you think you will find. What did you find? What was the source? How was it organized? Was it credible? Analyze the information and form a conclusion about crime in this country.
