Jonathan AlvaradoStreet LawDay 5 – Criminal Law Lesson PlanGoalsIt is the goal of this lesson to introduce the subject of criminal law, explore the students’ view and opinions on the guilt of alleged “criminals”. Methodology and Timing Begin class by giving out a quiz over Unit 1. Collect the quizzes and notes for Unit 1. Have a discussion about current events, things that happened over the weekend, etc… Have Trump’s tweets about Kaepernick and those who kneel during anthem ready via powerpoint. After talking about current events, transition immediately to showing the music video “Sound of da Police” by KRS One. (need to find out how to play video if the HISD filter blocks it). Show some quotes of the lyrics on the screen, and ask if the class agrees or disagrees and why, have a lengthy discussion. Have more discussion by giving the class scenarios of different crimes and asking them on a scale of 1 to 5 from not serious to very serious their opinion about the crimes. Have a lengthy discussion here. If students give a scenario a 1, ask if that should be a crime at all?If the same students keep giving their opinions, start cold calling on people asking their opinions. Ask for 6 volunteers who want to participate in a debate on Thursday at the beginning of class. Give those volunteers a handout that comes from the Street Law textbook on different policy approaches to war on drugs. If at this point there is still a substantial amount of time left, go into some of the important definitions from the slides and handout some fill in the blank handouts. Materials Note HandoutsHandouts on Drug WarPowerpointYoutubeEvaluationThe Quiz seemed to go well. Not too easy not too hard. We had some folks come in from a non-profit that were trying to get kids to register to vote. That kind of messed up my timing but it was cool to see the kids sign up for registration because that was one of the things we had been talking about in our class this entire time. Now we’re on criminal law. Today was very discussion based and the kids were super into it. This should continue. I’m going to be gone the next two classes, but Mr. Rodriguez has promised to keep teaching while I’m gone, focusing on crime in America. ................
