Applications are invited for two Locum Consultant posts in Paediatric Intensive Care at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) Glasgow. One 12 month post and one 6 month post which will carry 2 transport sessions.

It is an exciting time for Children’s Services within Greater Glasgow & Clyde for the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) which recently relocated to a new site within the South Glasgow Tri-Hospital campus. RHC is one the largest children’s hospitals in the UK and unique within Scotland. The PICU has 22 flexible critical care beds and admits approximately 1100 patients per year. An extensive range of paediatric sub-specialties is provided for which includes congenital heart disease surgery, interventional cardiology, ECMO / Ventricular Assist Devices, complex airway surgery, neuro-surgery, trauma, oncology, stem cell transplantation, renal transplantation, immuno-deficiencies and metabolic medicine. The intensive care team collaborates with the amalgamated Scottish retrieval service (ScotSTAR) to provide advice, support and the transfer of critically ill children by road or air (helicopter / fixed wing) throughout Scotland including many remote and rural locations.

The successful applicant will join 11 consultant colleagues. The Paediatric intensive care unit benefits from a strong, ambitious and dedicated team, supported by management that is keen to embrace vision and promote the reputation of the hospital. The unit is busy, continually running on a very high occupancy rate with high acuity patients. Consultants are supported by junior medical staff comprising middle grade paediatric trainees, PICU National Grid trainees and post CCT anaesthetic and international trainees. The pursuits of collaborative personal interests that compliment the unit’s comprehensive strategic service development are encouraged. The hospital has a strong traditional academic / teaching relationship and many consultant staff hold Honorary contracts with the University of Glasgow.

Glasgow is an exciting and vibrant city with close proximity to the great outdoors and has hosted the Commonwealth games, Ryder Cup celebrations, Euro-ELSO and the MTV awards. It has an excellent transport infrastructure facilitating easy travel both home and abroad.

Applicants should possess full GMC and a licence to practice. Postgraduate qualification (MRCPCH or FRCA equivalent) and have undertaken accredited training in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine.

The Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow.

The Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow is one the largest children’s hospitals in the UK and offers a complete range of paediatric supra-specialities within a single institution. It provides secondary care for more than 900,000 people resident within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area and tertiary/quaternary care for some 5m people living across Scotland. The hospital is unique to Scotland providing care for a complete range of paediatric and surgical specialties (including metabolic medicine, rheumatology, renal, GI, infectious diseases, haem-oncology, stem cell transplantation, neuro-surgery, trauma, renal transplantation and complex airway). It is also the Scottish National Centre for Congenital Heart Disease with interventional cardiology, an ECMO programme which is now in its 23rd year allowing the treatment of most types of congenital abnormality. The hospital will soon be a designated Major Trauma Centre plus the Scottish Burns Centre.

It is an exciting time for Children’s Services within Greater Glasgow & Clyde for the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) which recently relocated to a new site within the South Glasgow Tri-Hospital campus. This will enhance service developments to deliver state of the art medical care, in purpose built surroundings, where children’s physical and emotional needs have been prioritised. Critical care unit has expanded to 22 funded beds.

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) is commissioned by the Scottish Government Health Department to operate the SCOTSTAR retrieval service for Scotland.
