As primary care nurse practitioner I provide comprehensive advanced nursing care for children ages 0-21 years of age. I manage care for well children as well as those with an acute illness. In my role as provider, I evaluate, diagnose and treat per national guidelines. For children with complex healthcare needs, I provide referrals to specialists and coordinate care with an interdisciplinary health care team.

I coordinate program curricular changes and annual program assessment activities and report submission to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program Director. I organized and taught on-line courses for the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner program. I evaluated student achievement of course objectives and submitted grades. I coordinated skills days in simulation labs, for acute care nurse practitioner students. I collaborated with the program director to evaluate course and teaching effectiveness. I maintained close communication with the students. I participated in the school of nursing faculty graduate studies committee meetings, pediatric nurse practitioner team meetings and participated in university campus wide events. I analyzed and implemented scholarly work into the courses and participated in community events to promote the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner role. I collaborated with several community resources in an effort to find opportunities for students to obtain employment after successful completion of the program.

As an acute and primary care nurse practitioner I provided comprehensive advanced nursing care for children ages 0-21 years of age. I managed care for pediatric oncology/hematology patients in collaboration with pediatric oncologist/hematologist. Along with collaborative physician, I served as a provider for general inpatient pediatric patients and perform invasive procedures necessary for diagnosing and treatment. Procedures included punch skin biopsies, simple suturing, incision and drainage of abscesses, lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspirations, placement of central lines and arterial lines, placement of chest tubes, and with assistance of intensivist endotracheal intubation. I provided outpatient clinic care for pediatric patients with chronic illness and complex needs. Some disease processes included autoimmune disease, hematology disorders, immunodeficiency disorders and solid organ/bone marrow transplant patients. I monitored chronically ill patients during their medication infusions. I coordinated care with multidisciplinary team for chronically ill patients with complex needs. This included collaboration with members of social work, managed care, local agencies, home health, out of town facilities and third party payers. I performed peer to peer evaluations with third party payers on denial claims. I coordinated billing activities with collaborating physician. I referred patients for specialty consultations and treatments. I assessed and implemented a plan for needs of patients’ family members and/or caregivers. I participated in performance improvement processes at the hospital and outpatient clinic. I read current literature, discussed treatment guidelines with colleagues, and participated in professional organizations/conferences to keep abreast of developments in pediatric primary and acute care. I was an active member of the Sierra Providence Health Network - Pediatric Tumor Board and an active member of the Sierra Providence Health Network - Cancer Committee. I was a volunteer speaker for the Sierra Providence Health Network – Moderate Sedation Course: Pediatric Sedation. I served as a mentor for numerous Pediatric Acute Care NP Students
