|As outlined in the agency statute, the Chief Science Officer is a physician, licensed by the State of Washington, who serves at the pleasure of the Secretary and |

|reports directly to the Secretary of Health. The position is a member of the agency’s Executive Team and provides the voice of science and medicine at the policy|

|tables (whether internal or external to the agency) on all matters pertaining to the health and safety of Washington state residents. |

|Under the supervision of and in direct support of the Secretary of Health, the Chief Science Officer (CSO) will provide the Washington Department of Health with |

|key science, health, and medical expertise to provide public health recommendations to promote the health, safety, and well-being of Washingtonians. |

| |

|The CSO will support the Secretary of Health in serving as the State’s primary science expert and a key spokesperson on public health issues. This position is |

|responsible for being versed in the latest science, public health practice, and medical knowledge, making policy recommendations, and helping set evidence-based |

|strategic direction for the agency, as well as the public health system, on critical public health topics. |

| |

|The Chief Science Officer will oversee the Office of Science, Health, and Informatics (OSHI) working in close partnership with key positions such as the State |

|Epidemiologist for Communicable Disease; State Epidemiologist for Non-Communicable Disease; as well as other statewide health and medical personnel as assigned. |

|The CSO will provide leadership across the organization for all medical and epidemiological staff on science, health, and informatics. In this capacity, this |

|position is responsible for setting best practices and strategies supported by science and best practices for public health and informatics across the department.|

|When the Health Secretary is unavailable, this position will be expected to provide back-up responsibilities in coordination with other key departmental executive|

|leadership. The individual will be expected to provide leadership within DOH and beyond providing content expertise on relevant issues. This position will serve |

|as a key liaison with external health partners and organizations that will assist in the department’s mission especially during emergencies. |

|Supports the Secretary of Health in advancing the priorities of the State of Washington and the Washington Department of Health. |

| |

|Stays informed about emerging science, supports a strong scientific basis in the use of best available science, and provides evidence-based public health insights|

|into key departmental policy issues including key response challenges during emergencies. |

| |

|Represents the agency at local, state, regional, and national forums, committees, and workgroups for a variety of high-level public health issues. |

| |

|Assists in the development of evidence-based public messaging and serves as a key agency spokesperson for a variety of public health issues including during |

|emergencies. |

| |

|Oversees the State Epidemiologist for Communicable Disease and the State Epidemiologist for Non-Communicable Disease in promoting the health and well-being of |

|Washingtonians. |

| |

|Participates actively in the development of agency strategic goals, state public health improvement plan, coordinates the Health of Washington report, and |

|responsible for agency response to relevant external public health reports. |

| |

|Provides leadership to agency public health programs to ensure effective linkages with private and public provider groups so that disease is reported timely and |

|important changes in practice of medicine are communicated to providers. |

| |

|Serves as key agency liaison to county and state professional groups including medical societies and plan medical directors; Washington State Agency Medical |

|Advisors; local health officers and local boards of health. |

| |

|Provides clinical support to internal agency programs consistent with clinical experience and specialized training. |

| |

|As directed by the Secretary, represents the agency to the Governor’s Office, State Board of Health, Legislature, and others on high profile public health issues.|

|Doctor of Medicine from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy in the United States, or an equivalent degree from a foreign medical institution. |

|Completion of three years of medical residency program/patient care training with preference given to preventive medicine or primary care-related training |

|programs. [Note: a residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a |

|recognized body for the American Medical Association (AMA) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).] |

|Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Washington, by start date, or within 30 days. |
