INSTRUCTIONS FOR METHACHOLINE CHALLENGE STUDY

Methacholine challenge is a study whereby your physician can determine the presence of or the severity of asthma.

This study is a series of breathing tests done after various dosages of the drug Methacholine has been administered. The drug is given via a hand held nebulizer in the presence of a Licensed Respiratory Therapist. When the maximum dosage has been met, a bronchodilator will be given to reverse any of the effects of the Methacholine. A physician will be within the office during the test should any problems arise.

1. YOU MAY EAT A LITE MEAL PRIOR TO TESTING.

2. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANY COFFEE, TEA, CHOCOLATE OR ANY OTHER PRODUCT CONTAINING CAFFEINE FOR AT LEAST 8 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST.

3. DO NOT SMOKE ANY THING WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE TEST. IN ADDITION, NO SMOKING 24 HOURS AFTER THE TEST.

4. DISCONTINUE ANY INHALED BREATHING MEDICATIONS, Please check list of medications on the reverse side of this form. IF YOU BECOME SEVERELY SHORT OF BREATH, PLEASE TAKE YOUR MEDICATION AND INDICATE THAT AT THE TIME OF YOUR TEST

5. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM WEARING PERFUME.

6. TESTING WILL TAKE AT LEAST AN HOUR. PLEASE PLAN ON AT LEAST THAT LONG OF A TIME PERIOD.

PLEASE, if there any questions prior to the test, call this office and ask for the RESPIRATORY THERAPIST.
