Job Title: HVAC Technician JourneymanJob Category: Non-Exempt PCLS: 60047Salary Grade: FSummary Incumbents in the HVAC Technician series install, maintain, and repair campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and controls. Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe HVAC Technician Journeyman is distinguished from the HVAC Technician Apprentice in that incumbents in the Journeyman level use advanced level skills to perform more complex and technical tasks with more independence. Reporting and Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThe HVAC Technician Journeyman reports to a Foreman. This classification may train and guide less senior technicians. Typical FunctionsRepairs and maintains general HVAC systems and their components to ensure cost effective operation with minimal down time. Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and associated computer automation controls.Monitors and maintains HVAC control, automation and associated systems in campus buildings.Installs all HVAC and energy management automation.Identifies and repairs HVAC system and control problems in coordination with customer’s needs.Maintains records, including disposal of hazardous materials and treatment chemicals, work orders, time cards, and billing. Assists in the review of plans and specifications for new systems and/or controls.Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the repair, maintenance, and installation techniques of the HVAC trade.Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and associated components.Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment and control systems.Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing all types of HVAC systems, equipment, and elements.Ability to analyze building heating and air-conditioning requirements and recommend systems or modifications.Skilled in the use of test equipment common to trade.Ability to use computer-based monitoring and control devices for maintenance and troubleshooting.Knowledge of various testing equipment and techniques.Ability to read and interpret blueprints for designing projects.Ability to use hand and power tools common to trade.Basic computer skills.Ability to work with limited supervision.Customer service skills.Ability to complete trainings to stay current with the trade.Minimum Qualifications Four years of directly related work experience in the HVAC/refrigeration trade is required. Work Environment and Physical Requirements The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
