Welcome home to the Chip!

We're Glad You're Back, Buffalo Chip Visitors!

It's been a long winter and we missed you! We've been cleaning up Mother Nature's mess, filling in potholes and rearranging things and we hope you like the new layout. If this is your first time to the Legendary Buffalo Chip, or even if you're a seasoned Chip camper, there are a few things you ought to know!

The Top Shelf VIP area, located at the amphitheater, is where all the cool kids go to watch the concerts. Now offering an extended deck with seating, catered food and cocktails to round out a remarkable concert experience, you'll be thrilled with the unobstructed second-story view so check with the box office on how to arrange that special night of watching your favorite band.

While you're at the box office, be sure to get your tickets to this year's 12th Annual Legends Ride, the 11th Annual Biker Belles Ride and the 1st Annual Rusty Wallace Ride. Tickets are available up to the day before each ride, or you can get them on site at the start of the runs, but don't miss any of these exceptionally worthy charity rides. The grey building located in front of the Freedom Field is where each of these special events will end.

Just across Flag Avenue, over at the CrossRoads where entrance is FREE, is the newly redecorated Big Engine Bar! You'll find $2.00 beers, $3.00 cocktails, craft

beer on tap, live bands and fun stuff like bikini babes to wash your grubby bike so be sure to check out the haps right under the BIG engine.

The famous free pancake breakfast has

been relocated! Chip campers will find Sons of Light Motorcycle Ministry flipping flapjacks inside the fenced area on the corner

Woody's Welcome

Welcome to the Chip's 38th consecutive Music & Motorcycle Festival. Holy Smokes! You have for 37 successive years made the Chip the centerpiece of the world's largest gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts, the Sturgis Rally. The 37th was a hoot and left us excited for your return.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the 2019 changes at the Chip. Frankly, with the late and substantial springtime snowfall followed by 6 flash floods in early July and constant rainfall through mid-July, the entire crew is relieved you're here and we're no longer having to fix washed out roads and such.

Thanks to all that snow and rainfall, the grass is greener than ever and the trees are smiling. And so are the Chip's 27 permanent and approximately 500 temporary event staff. Remember, please, that we're all here to serve you. Every chance you get to compliment a staff-member for having been courteous or having done something right will be appreciated.

This is going to be one fantastic party and, yes, practice for the 80th annual Sturgis Rally that holds such great promise for 2020. Today's the gift, so let's all enjoy it to the max as we renew old friendships and build new ones. Thank you for being part of the Chip's family of friends.

``My job with the Sturgis Buffalo Chip

is basically anything to do with dirt. It's all about safety while having a good

time!"

Thrill-a-minute entertainment

Meet the Director of Motorsports, Ed Beckley

If you're into racing, hill climbs and anything at all to do with speed, the famous Buffalo CHIP TT American Flat Track races and Hooligan races, both presented by Indian Motorcycles, Gambler 500 Rallycross, Dirt Riot races, Hooligan Hill Climbs, Gambler 500 Mini Bike Showdown, and the Vintage races and Street Drags, are a guaranteed rush offered right here at the Buffalo Chip! The common denominator in all these exciting activities is the Chip's Director of Motorsports, Ed Beckley.

"My job with the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is basically anything to do with dirt," Ed chuckled. "It's all about safety while having a good time!"

Coming from a family of motorcyclists, the Beckleys did their dirt racing and hill climbing on the same bikes they did their street riding, proving out that biking is in his blood. Beckley's

first trip to Sturgis was when he was 4 years old and by the time he was 15, he was riding a 1953 KK Harley-Davidson from Kansas to Sturgis with his parents on their Harley dresser. The family camped in City Park, well before there was a Buffalo Chip Campground.

Ed's family was friends with Pearl and Pappy Hoel, returning year after year, not realizing he and his family were making history. As far as they knew, they were just enjoying the camaraderie of 1,200-1,500 other motorcyclists in celebrating motorcycling in the Black Hills.

By 1973 Ed was jumping cars on his bike, making a name for himself with his daring jumps, most notably because of his 6'3"stature, and eventually decided the Legendary Buffalo Chip was the place to be. Ed called Woody and introduced himself as the "World's Largest Motorcycle

Saturday, August 3, 2019

Jumper." He was shocked to hear Woody say, "Hi! I've been looking for you!" And so began a life-long friendship.

In 1988 or '89, Ed first performed in the Amphitheater. He'd jump cars and trucks, but one year a jet dragster was placed with old bike frames behind it. The jet was used to set the frames on fire like a giant cutting torch. Beckley jumped the fire and the dragster and was pelted with flying chunks of hot pot metal. Ed chuckles at the memory. "It's been great fun with good friends."

For 2019, the fun continues with Ed Beckley at the motorsports helm. He promises more thrill-a-minute kind of entertainment, including what he's calling, "Heathens and Hooligans." Check the schedule for daily race activities. You'll not want to miss Wednesday's vintage races at the Buffalo Chip Amphitheater with an antique bike show and a chance for spectators to don a helmet and ride their own bike down the dirt track! Just like the Beckleys, the Legendary Buffalo Chip family of campers continues to make motorcycle history! Be sure you're a part of it!

``I found my people, and I never felt like I was alone afterward.

A Word from Assistant Editor Madeline Woodruff

This year, I was inspired to seek out and interview several incredible women bikers who've been out on the long and winding roads worldwide, kicking up dust on the racetracks, making history, and making a name for female bikers wherever they go. I wanted to celebrate them, these fearless women, and what they bring to the epics of motorcycling. I wasn't disappointed. I'm forever inspired by these ladies on two wheels, and I'm excited to present this year's Sturgis Rider Daily special, Inspiring Women Riders!

growing pains Alicia elfving

ALICIA ELFVING/MOTOLADY

MotoLady is a website created by Alicia Mariah Elfving as a way to encourage current and aspiring women riders and replace the bad reputation the sport/hobby has racked up over the years with a positive sense of community for men and women motorcyclists alike.

Alicia uses her own photography, video, and design alongside the content of global talents to give a rounded reflection of the motorcycle industry and culture around the world. Real women who ride, motorcycles in art, design, marketing, motorcycle fashion, gear reviews, industry news, and one of a kind editorials are a few of the things covered. Check out her website here:

SRD: How long have you been riding? Alicia: I stopped counting after 6, but I think I'm going on about 10 years now! I got my endorsement when I was 18, my first bike at 23.

SRD: Do you have a favorite ride you've done?

Alicia: A few years ago I did a video with a guy from Australia, he takes riders and their custom bikes and susses out. It was through him that I was able to decide my favorite ride. I lived in Ventura, California, just south of Santa Barbara and the Los Padres National Forest out there is just glorious. Through it is highway 150 and 33, which is a very twisty road. It's my favorite partially because I lived like three blocks off the 150 and 33 entrance, so I could ride it anytime. There's not a lot of vehicles, so it's a good place to

Saturday, August 3, 2019

Sturgis

eat, get coffee, see some beautiful vistas -- take a look at the ocean and sunsets. It's truly a bucket-list ride, as I tell everyone.

SRD: What challenges have you faced as a woman rider?

Alicia: I find that, right now, the biggest struggle is that women bikers are taking over so quickly that it's getting harder for women as competition grows. It can be hard to create long bonds with women riders, and I cant wait until we crest the hill so we don't always feel like we're competing with each other.

If you're trying to be serious as a woman rider, it's harder. It's frustrating. We're growing so fast that we're having growing pains right now. People's perspectives haven't adapted yet. The gear industry especially; there isn't enough protective gear for women.

SRD: How about biker fashion, and the vintage look? What's the scene

for women's gear today?

Alicia: I am a huge proponent for safety gear because I, personally, have much less anxiety when I'm fully geared up. I like to ride hard, so my knee is 2 inches from the ground and I don't want to, you know, scrape it off.

When it comes to ladies, it's been a slow burn to get companies to make proper gear for women. There's a lot of problems with the gear on the market right now, like, the men's version will have four more parts of armor than the women's do.

Women riders have been growing so quickly and we're overall becoming a younger demographic. We have more buying power. So, we're changing how companies think about women's gear and they're now noticing the problems. It's not because we're louder or have more money, it's because we're occupying the space.

SRD: If you could speak directly to the women reading this interview, what would you tell them about what it means to be a Moto lady and to ride with the same passion as you do?

Alicia: Try to help people navigate motorcycling. Include them, invite them to events, share the things you learn. The more we share and the more we collaborate, the faster we will keep growing.

Also, don't let anyone tell you what kind of motorcycle or gear you need to ride in. When I started, people told me what to ride and everyone had an opinion, and most of them were wrong! Their opinions are not based on what's best for you, especially as a woman.

With bikes, the beautiful thing about it is that we all recognize our tribe members. Not a lot of people have that just in passing. You can't know someone is a salsa dancer without asking them, right? That's why I became so attached to motorcycling. I found my people, and I never felt like I was alone afterward.

What's the Skinny?

MAA exhibit opens today

What: Motorcycles As Art: What's the Skinny? Motorcycling Without the

Fat When: August 3?9, 2?10PM

Daily (Closed Sunday from 3?7PM)

Saturday, August 3, 2019

World-famous motorcycle photog, Michael Lichter, has curated motorcycle exhibits at the Buffalo Chip's Motorcycles As Art gallery show for 11 years, with a new theme each year during rally. Themes have ranged from the caf? racer culture to choppers, baggers and everything in between and draw guests from around the world with his elegant bike displays accented by theater lighting and elevated pedestals.

Motorcycles As Art has become a hallmark of The Best Party Anywhere during the Sturgis Rally and is offered free to the public. For 2019's theme of "What's the Skinny? Motorcycling Without the Fat," Lichter features bikes that are the stylistic opposite of the thousand pound custom bagger. Light, lean and sleek with no rules on how a bike should look, a builder's inclusion in the show was based on their past builds, leaving it up to the audience to determine if their interpretation fits the exhibit title. One builder, however, was chosen from a last-minute contest open to the public. The single Wildcard winner is

Brandon Keene from Traverse City, Michigan, who entered his rigid 1976 HarleyDavidson FXE, named "Showtime," and won the honor of displaying his bike at the Buffalo Chip's Event Center. In addition to the 20 artists and 35 other builders entered in the exhibit, Keene's Showtime special build will be an exciting machine to check out. Equally exciting is that this is not only Brandon and his wife Amy's first trip to the Buffalo Chip, but it's the couple's first trip to Sturgis, as well! Be sure to give the Keenes a warm Buffalo Chip welcome as you enjoy this year's Motorcycles As Art gallery show.

How to find this free exhibit

We really want you to find the compelling Motorcycles As Art Exhibition. As the preeminent custom motorcycle display in the country you owe it to yourself to spend some time checking out some moto-art and fabulous fabrication creativity.

So, here's the deal: The dedicated home for Motorcycles As Art is inside the Chip Event Center on the east side of the Buffalo Chip campground. You don't have to pay to get into the Chip to visit the exhibition. The entrance to the Event Center is on 132nd Avenue, a road you can access on the north of the campground via Alkali Road, or on the south of the campground via 207th Street.

The map here shows you how to follow Alkali road to the exhibit. If you're a Chip camper, the Event Center is easy to find; it's between the Hot Leathers store and zipline tower in the amphitheater. If you're coming from I-90, navigate like a local and take the Pleasant Valley Road exit to new Ft. Meade Way. Follow that about 4 miles, turn right on 207th then left on 132nd. You'll arrive without hassle or traffic.

Ethanol:

the big consideration

If you're still not sure what to do about using ethanol fuel when pulling up to the pumps, here's a bit more information. E10, approved for use by ALL motorcycle manufacturers, is a 90% gasoline, 10% ethanol mixture that is in use at gas stations all across the country. Ethanol, an alcohol made from corn, sugar cane and other grains, is used as an oxygenate in fuel.

Ethanol can absorb water in your fuel tank, helping to limit the corrosion water might cause, which is only a problem if you get too much water in your tank, which is an issue if you store you bike for long periods. In that case, it's advisable to either completely empty your tank and fuel system or fill it all the way up and add a fuel stabilizer to avoid any problems. Which is recommended with or without ethanol in your fuel.

If you're a long distance rider, though, chances are good that you filled your tank with E10 and didn't even know it since many states, like California and Ohio, do not label blends of ethanol at or below 10 percent.

However, fuels with higher ethanol ratios like E15 and E85, do require labeling and are easy to avoid since they are usually pumped from different colored hoses but the two are also branded with bright orange warning labels.

E15 is only recommended for cars from 2001 or newer and E85 is meant for flex fuel vehicles only, not for motorcycles. E10, however, is perfectly safe. The ethanol in E10 is a solvent that will loosen sludge, varnish and dirt that has built up over time. Ethanol increases octane and cleaner burning emissions. But, if you're still not certain, be sure to check your

bike's owner's manual for your manufacturer's guidelines.

The Best Place to Fill Up with E10 is at the Buffalo Chip Stop and Fuel Gas Station located near the Freedom Field!

Offering 93-octane E10 for less than most stations in the area sell 91-octane premium.

Open 24/7/365 days a year, just slide your card, fill up and off you go!
