We are linking arms, standing in solidarity with each other on that special day. The theme is Life! Standing Together, Unified Amidst Our Beautiful Diversity!

2020 VIRTUAL ANNUAL MEETING

NOVEMBER 9 – 10

Due to the nature of this year’s meeting, no formal business will be conducted and therefore, churches do not need to elect messengers. However, registration will still be required in order to access all meeting presentations and breakout sessions. This is an opportunity for all of us to experience the excellent programs planned! Go to for details and to register.

N. T. Wright is the Keynote Speaker. He is one of the foremost New Testament scholars with an unparalleled ability to interpret and apply scripture in a way that reaches through the local church to engage society as a whole. Music will include a preview from Kate Campbell, featured singer/storyteller.

There will be an Evening Worship Service on Monday, November 9, featuring both Wright and Campbell, as well as an exploration of BGAV’s “Deep Roots, Green Shoots” with Executive Director, Dr. John Upton, and a Memorial Service. On Tuesday, there will be several breakout sessions:

• Racial reconciliation issues and how the BGAV has historically handled race relations

• How the pandemic can create new opportunities for church innovation

• Forming a new church in today’s world

• Reaching children and youth during the pandemic

FROM YOUR MODERATOR>>>

A big shout-out of appreciation to the ones that came to the JRBA Executive Board Meeting and gave a report on their office or committee they serve on. Also, to our Field Strategist, Skip Wallace, for traveling so far (over the mountain in the fog) to be with us and install our officers for another year of service to our Lord Jesus Christ.

We’re starting a new year. If for some reason, you cannot remain on a committee that you served on last year, please let me know. Committees will be approved at the January Executive Board Meeting.

With all this year’s difficulties, a lot of good came out of it. Please continue to pray for our association, churches, your neighbors, country, and world - that souls would be saved by the Grace of God.

Then he said to his disciples, “ The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” Matthew 9:37

JRBA Quarterly

Executive Board

Meeting

October 12, 2020

Mrs. Marilyn Snoddy, Moderator, opened the meeting by sharing a devotional on Matthew 14:29-31. “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked o the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “Why did you doubt?” In thinking about this experience Peter had with Jesus, it’s interesting to think about the range of emotions he must have experienced: excitement, belief, and then fear! During this pandemic, we too, have, and are, experiencing a wide range of emotions: fear (we don’t want to see others get sick or be sick ourselves), frustration, doubt, and confusion (conflicting media reports on validity of many things), rebellion (not wanting to wear face masks, can’t enjoy the fellowship of church, etc.), isolation (having to stay in), and a sinking feeling (as we see riots and protests that often end in violence and destruction of property). As time has gone on, we must also see the blessings that have resulted from the pandemic. Most of our churches have been able to send out the Gospel in new, far-reaching ways! People are hearing the Word as never before. We must remember that Peter experienced many of those same feelings, but that when he refocused on Jesus and trusted in him, he felt secure! We, too, must keep our eyes on Jesus and He will see us through. Remember the words to the hymn, On Christ the solid rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand. Marilyn led us in a prayer asking God to help us keep our eyes on Him and to bless our time of doing business for the association.

Marilyn then called the meeting to order and Frank Breault, Clerk, had the roll call of churches. There were 17 representatives, from 7 churches, plus 1 visitor, in attendance.

The minutes of the July, 2020, Executive Board Meeing were presented. A motion was made to amend the minutes to state that the Leadership had decided to change the October meeting back to the 12th. It was seconded and approved. The minutes were then approved as amended. The Treasurer’s quarterly report was presented by Judy Ownby, Treasurer. As of September 30, 2020, the checking account balance was $37,183.99, which included the following: Additional Missions - $1,100.00, Rise Against Hunger - $6,107.39, Missions Blitz - $975.09, Missions Trips - $1,850.00, Christian Life Baccalaureattes - $200.00, Christian Eduation/Training/Evangelism - $500.00. Total Disbursements were $3,932.70 and total receipts were $4,441.37, which included church contributions of $4,081.00, Rise Against Hunger - $350.00, Interest on checking - $1.50, and an Amazon Smile donation of $6.74. The Saving Account stands at $4,306.17. The report was approved as presented.

The Treasurer then presented the Year-End Report along with the proposed budget for 2020-2021. Seventeen of the eighteen churches gave to the regular budget during 2019-2020, contributing a total of $20,988.11. The Alma Hunt State Mission Offering contributed an additional $213.91 and an individual and other contributions totaled $527.94 for a grand total of $21,729.96. Total reciepts (including designated receipts) were $32,649.80; total expenditures were $24,846.51, leaving a year end general fund checking account balance of $37,183.99 and a savings account balance of $4,306.17.

The total Propsed Budget for 2020-2021 is $33,233.00. This amount includes $7,082.00 of carryover funds for Rise Against Hunger and Missions Blitz. Therefore, the actual budget remains the same at $26,151.00. The Finance Committee agreed to recommend no increase to the budget. Included in the Proposed Budget:

Missions Blitz: Last year’s budget and donations will

be carried forward, plus the regular budgeted amount

of $250.00 (Total $1,225.00)

Rise Against Hunger: Last year’s budget and

donations will be carried forward, plus the regular

budgeted amount of $500.00 (Total $6,607.00)

Additional Missions: Donations remain the same

($100 each) to Southside VA Pregnancy Center,

GraceInside Prison Ministry, Gideons, Baptist

Collegiate Ministry, and Southside Fellowship of

Chrisitan Athletes. Added this year is BGAV Disaster

Relief and Piedmont Habitat for Humanity. (NO

INCREASE TO THE BUDGET)

There were no changes made to Office Expenses or Payroll. The Proposed Budget was approved as presented. (See pages 12 of the newsletter.)

Betty Toney, Benevolence Fund Chair, presented the quarterly report. During the past quarter, a donation was given to an individual who lost most of his belongings in a fire. There were no contributions. The Balance-on-Hand (9/30/20) stands at $6,392.28, with one outstanding check of $100. Funds available for use: $6,292.28.

Our moderator then introduced and welcomed Austin Williams, the Interim Campus Minister for Longwood

and Hampden Sydney Baptist Collegiate Ministry. She noted that a tentative JRBA schedule for 2020-2021 was included in the packet. Annual church profiles have

9

been sent to church clerks and are due October 21. Officers and committee chairs should also turn in their Annual reports by that date for the Book of Reports.

Rev. Skip Wallace, our BGAV Field Strategist, brought us an update on BGAV and spoke about the upcoming Virtual BGAV Annual Meeting. He encouraged everyone to go online and register and participate in Monday night’s worship, November 6, and the breakouts on Tuesday, November 7. He also mentioned that a Virtual Pastors’ Conference has also been planned with Travis Collins, from Huntsville, Alabama, as the keynote speaker. Information will be sent to the pastors so that they can participate. Skip also mentioned that although we had not been able to hold our Revitalize Conference due to the pandemic, he is hopeful that we can reschedule that as soon as it is safe to do so. He noted that we just don’t know exactly what the ministry of the church will look like in the future, but we do know that the church continues to grow during this time and minister to those in our communities. God is in control and we should not get discouraged.

Betty Toney, JRBA WMU Director, noted that the WMUV Women’s Get-Away was cancelled, but there will be a Virtual Women’s Conference on November 6 – 7. The JRBA WMU sent a $50 Walmart gift card (+ individual donation of $50) to the Eastern shore Migrant Ministry.

Gwynn Tyler, BGAV Mission Council Member, distributed copies of John Upton’s year-end report on all that BGAV has accomplished. He also noted that JRBA has two folks in positions made possible through BGAV: Austin Williams – BCM and Skip Wallace’s daughter, who is serving as a Venturer in Lebanon.

An update was presented from the Nominating Committee, noting that we no longer have a Representative to the BCM, but are getting regular updates through Austin. Rev. Jimmy Dunn, Chair, reported on Missions. He thanked the churches for their innovative mission work in difficult times and talked about the opportunity available to speak a word of encouragement to those who receive food at the Blue Ridge Food Distribution twice a month. He noted that there are numerous opportunities to assist our schools during this time and encouraged contacting them to see how your church can help. He also noted how important it is to pray for our educators. He noted that FBC hosts the Bloodmobile and encouraged all of us to find ways to utilize our church buildings to help our communities.

Rev. Woody Moore thanked everyone for all that is being done through JRBA to further the ministry of Hope for Appalachia. Things have had to be done differently due to the pandemic, but Hope continues to minister to the students, primarily in Kentucky. In the spring, he, Rev. Roger Woody, and Wayne Gough delivered the Hope boxes to 4 schools in one day. Some boxes were delivered via school buses delivering lunches. At Bell Elementary, the principal and teachers assisted with getting the boxes out to the students. The Fall items will also be distributed, but the team will not get to meet with the students as before. The team will deliver the clothing items, Kindergartern bags, and blankets November 4 – 7. Hope for Appalachia also assists with providing Christmas for students who would otherwise receive no gifts.

Rev. Jimmy Dunn, Sunday School Director, asked that our churches continue to emphasize Sunday School and do it in any way that you can. He appreciates the creativity of those churches who have resumed Sunday School and encouraged all churches to find a way to have Bible Study, whether it be virtual, in-person, outside, etc.

There was no New Business or Old Business. Rev. Skip Wallace then installed the JRBA officers for 2020-2021. He called each one by name and had them to stand. He asked them to respond to acknowledged their willingness to serve, to accept the challenge of leadership, and to promise to give it their best. He asked the other attendees to respond to acknowledge their part in commissioning these leaders to serve and to pray for, encourage, and support them. He then prayed for the officers.

Rev. Michael Khol noted that Austin Williams had been hired as an Associate Pastor at Mulberry Grove. Jimmy Dunn announced that FBC would be hosting the Bloodmobile on Wednesday, October 14.

Rev. Michael Khol closed the meeting in prayer.
