Prayers are said daily at St Peter’s, at 8.30am and 5.00pm. We invite you to request prayer for people or situations that weigh heavily on your heart and mind at this time so that we can include them on a regular basis. Unless you ask otherwise, we will pray for them for two weeks from the time we receive your request. You would also have to let us know if you would also like the prayer to be used in Sunday services.
If you would like to ask for a prayer, you may telephone, email or write to the Vicar (see back cover; emails may also be sent via St Peter’s website), or you may prefer to leave the prayer on the board beside the door in church. If you name somebody, please be sure that they are happy for this to happen; you may choose to use just a Christian name or be even less specific. You are; of course, welcome to join us for daily prayers at any time.
Gary writes………
Shining a Light
The recent Panorama programme on the historic abuse by Bishop Peter Ball, Bishop of Gloucester, was both vile and sickening. Whilst there was nothing new in the programme to the previously released Gibb Report, ‘An Abuse of Faith’, it has re-shone a light on the failings of the Church and the bravery of those who were willing to speak out.
The way it was handled was inexcusable and shows how much we don’t want to hear bad news, don’t want to act on it, are afraid of seniority, and how there are countless victims of abuse still out there who have kept quiet for years. I urge anyone affected by the programme to let me or the Diocesan Safeguarding Team know if one of those victims is you, or whether you have been a victim of any sort of abuse from clergy, past or present:
And then there was the College of Bishops statement about ‘Living in Love and Faith’ which baldly underlined the traditional teaching of the Church that heterosexual marriage is the only appropriate context for sexual relationships, inappropriately timed to coincide with the announcement that heterosexual civil partnerships had been legalised; perhaps setting the Church back years in terms of its inclusivity and how it interacts with modern society. The publication of this document was criticised by Bishop Rachel, and the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have both apologised for the release of the statement, but for many the damage has been done.
Our job as the Church, in all denominations, is to share the transforming love of God in Jesus Christ, so that all may come to know the Good News of Christ crucified.
Jesus said, “So let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works.” (Matt 5.16)
Revd Gary
Electoral Roll Revision
The Electoral Roll is due shortly for its annual revision. If your name is not listed and you regard yourself as a regular worshipper at St Peter’s, I encourage you to add your name. Being on the Roll is a sign that you regard yourself as a full member of the church. The Roll ought to be an accurate reflection of the size of the congregation, and this is useful for a variety of purposes. Another function is to give the Parish Office names and addresses to contact (subject to data protection) for urgent or important notices. So it could be to your advantage to be included. Application forms are available from the Parish Office or at the back of the church.
These days many people use email as the most efficient means of contact. Therefore, although you don’t have to do anything if your name is already on the Roll, on the other hand if you haven’t mentioned your email address, would you please consider sending it to the Electoral Roll Officer (Eric Miller – ehmiller@) not later than 9 March.
Revd Gary

ST. PETER’S WELCOMES YOUNG PEOPLE
The Tuesday Club is for babies and toddlers aged 0-4 years, with their parents or other carers. We meet every Tuesday during term time from 10 to 11.30am in the Glebe Cottages next to St Peter’s
Each session includes time for play, a Bible story, craft, drinks and songs.
The adults are a very friendly group and enjoy a good chat and a cup of tea or coffee, as well as joining in with the playing and craft activities. We use a lot of glue! For more information, contact Helen Shill 007580 637767
Young children, with their parents, are always welcome at church, particularly for the Sunday 10am Family Communion service. On special festivals, we hold All-Age Worship; usually at 10am (see ‘Calendar’). St Peter’s has a spacious carpeted ‘children’s area’ near the front where parents and children can sit together, play with the toys, and take part in the worship. Just turn up!
For older children, Junior Church takes place in the Glebe Cottages during the 10am service. Children attend the start of the service but leave after the first hymn, returning to church at ‘The Peace’. The activities at Junior Church are based on the same Bible readings as the adults are learning about.
For information about SCC Youth activities: please speak to Liz Johnson (Youth Management Committee rep) or Hanna Sturcken (Youth Leader)

St Peter’s Men’s Group
2020
Men of St Peter’s started meeting together a year ago in February. So far, this has largely taken the form of meeting on the first Thursday of every month in the Wheatsheaf on the Old Bath Road, for lunch or in the evening in alternate months. There has been no hidden agenda, and the purpose of the meetings has been entirely social, to get to know each other better over a drink
Apart from January, when the weather was decidedly inhospitable, there have been 10-12 men at every meeting, lunch being slightly less popular than the evenings.
A questionnaire was distributed to ask people what extra activities they might like. As a result, a visit was organised one evening to Favourite Beers – Cheltenham’s Award Winning beer shop in Hewlett Road. Another request was for walks, and the first of these took place in February of this year on a beautiful morning. Seven men walked from the Wheatsheaf to the top of Leckhampton hill and back before joining four others back at base for lunch. No mishaps occurred in spite of a small navigational error on the way down.
Future walks and excursions are planned for the coming year.
1st Thursdays @ The Wheatsheaf 12.30pm or 7.30pm
5-Mar - 7.30pm

Local churches strengthen emissions target after climate emergency declared
On 1 February, the Church of England in and around Gloucestershire called on all parts of the diocese to work towards an 80 per cent reduction in emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases no later than 2030. They also supported an ambition for the diocese to be carbon neutral by the same date. The agreement brought forward the date from 2050 to 2030, meaning that a fast and extensive shift in our current practices will be needed.

Pilgrimage for conservation along the ancient trails
What is the best way to help raise money for a church dedicated to a patron saint of pilgrims? A sponsored walk to the ancient pilgrim destination of Santiago de Compostela.
DAC Secretary Adam Klups is fundraising for conservation work to the unique wall paintings at the church of St James the Great in Stoke Orchard. Starting in the Spanish city of Ferrol, along the Camino Ingles, (‘The English Way’), the walk will take six days, finishing on Easter Sunday.
He said, “It will be an amazing adventure to add my footsteps to those of the pilgrims who have made the journey over the centuries before me.” Sponsor Adam and help his cause gf.me/u/xjm4wj and follow him on Instagram at @adam_and_liz_walking_to_santiago
The Inaugural Gloucester Pilgrimage, Saturday 25 April
If you can’t stretch to Spain, how about joining the new pilgrimage route from Tewkesbury Abbey to Gloucester Cathedral. This route has been devised by the Gloucester Cathedral Ramblers on behalf of the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral. 2020 has been designated ‘Year of the Pilgrimage’ by the Church of England English Cathedrals group.
In addition to the 15 mile route from Tewkesbury to Gloucester, there will be options to join the walk at various intermediate points, providing an opportunity for people to walk a distance that they feel is comfortably within their capabilities.
All intermediate joining points, as well as the start in Tewkesbury, will be accessible by public transport. For more information please contact GloucesterPilgrim@.
Youth Conference—from Thorpe Park to Lambeth Palace
For the first time ever the Diocese of Gloucester is organising a youth forum with young people from across the world visiting our diocese over 10 days. This forum ties in with the Lambeth Conference and is an opportunity for young people to come together, learn about different cultures, and have fun.
It takes place from 18 to 29 July and will include small teams of young people from our partner dioceses. We are looking for young people from across our diocese to be part of this incredible opportunity. More details from garygrady@
Cheltenham Science and Literature Festivals
Did you know that a team from the Diocese of Gloucester runs family activities at the Cheltenham Festivals each year? We're aiming to give people a good experience of the Church of England, even if they would not normally step into a church building. It's a great chance to connect with new people from across the county and beyond.
We would love to recruit some more volunteers to our fun and friendly team - if you can chat confidently with children and their parents and teachers and would like to be involved, get in touch with Kerry Pateman kpateman@.uk for details.

We are seeking volunteers to help run our family tent in the heart of the Cheltenham Festival Village for both this year’s Science Festival from 2-7 June and the Literature Festival from 6-14 October.
Bishop Rachel, alongside others, has developed an exciting partnership with Cheltenham Festivals to run a family space, called ‘The Chatterbox.’ This is a colourful, informal and fun place where children and families can gather to get creative with ideas and words. (Please see attached pictures - you are welcome to use them!)
This is a fantastic opportunity for the churches in our diocese to engage and be in conversation with the thousands of families and young people who attend the Festival every year.
To run the family tent we are seeking volunteers who will help us take care of the families, help with making arts and crafts and be happy to chat with lots of people! As you have volunteered before, we are hoping you may be willing to help again, and invite others along with you!
