Excel Crossword Puzzle

Format your worksheet:

1. Select columns A thru X: Click on the A and holding the Shift key, drag to the X column

2. Format>Column>Width 3

3. Format> Row> Height 18

4. Format>Cells> Alignment tab. A. Click down arrow under Horizontal and select Center.

B. Click down arrow under Vertical and select Center.

C. Click OK.

Put in your words:

1. Click on a square (cell) in the first line. Click the B on the menu bar at the top.

2. Type a name for your puzzle.

3. Put on your Caps Lock from the keyboard. Starting two rows down, type intersecting words on the grid, 1 letter per cell. Use arrow keys to navigate to adjacent cells.

Add your lines:

1. Holding down Ctrl key, click all the cells with letters in them.

2. Click Format > Cells > Border tab. Click the Outline button and Inside button.

Add your corresponding numbers:

Click on the first letter of a word. Retype the letter, putting a number in front of the letter,

such as 1K. Do this for each beginning letter.

Format a numbered square:

1. Select the number only by dragging your mouse pointer over it in the formula bar.

2. Click Format >Cell>Font

3. Check the Superscript box.

4. Click OK

5. Repeat for each numbered cell

(make sure the Formatting toolbar is visible - View>Toolbars>Formatting (checked))

6. Holding down CTRL key, select

all numbered cells

7. Click the left alignment button.

8. Hit the “Enter” key.

Click File>Save

Create your clue lists:

Below the crossword puzzle create separate Down and Across lists of clues. Type in the clues to each answer, using the numbers that correspond to each word.

Color the background of your crossword puzzle:

Holding down the Ctrl key, click all the blank cells around your puzzle.

Click Format>Cells>Pattern Pick a color and click OK.

Outline your puzzle:

1. Click and drag your mouse until

the entire puzzle is selected.

2. Click Format>Cells>Border.

3. Click the Outline button.

4. Click OK.

Create Student Crossword worksheet:

Copy the worksheet by clicking the blank gray cell in the

upper left corner of the worksheet.

1. Right Click>Copy

2. Go to another blank worksheet.

3. Click the gray blank cell in this worksheet in the upper left corner.

4. Right Click>Paste

Blank out the answers:

5. Holding down the Ctrl key, select all the non-numbered squares.

6. Press “Delete” key.

7. Go back to each numbered square and delete the letter, leaving only the number.

Click File>Save
