Dear Puzzler,

Welcome to the sixtieth and last in our series of twice yearly puzzles which so far, including Gift Aid value, have raised just over £676,000 for a wide range of charities. We have been producing Rainbow Charity Puzzles now for 30 years and have very much enjoyed doing so. However, we are both now aged 85 and as you can imagine, there is a fair amount of time and work involved and it is with some reluctance that we have decided the time is right to draw the puzzles to a close. No back numbers will be available and there will be no shorter puzzles at Christmas. (A number of you had sent us SAEs for the next Christmas quiz and we are returning these .herewith).

The Charity The profits of this quiz will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) - Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal (Reg Charity: 1062638). As you know the conflict in Ukraine has forced many families to flee their homes. People have left behind jobs, belongings and loved ones. DEC charities are working in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, meeting the immediate needs of refugees and displaced people by providing food, water, health assistance, protection, trauma care etc. Your donation will make a real difference. For more information visit . Let's hope that we can give Rainbow Charity Puzzles a good send-off by raising a substantial amount for the poor people of Ukraine.

The Puzzle The puzzle is entitled “The FINAL Puzzle” and there are 20 solutions starting with each of the letters of the word FINAL.. (The clues ARE in a particular order). We should emphasise that you do not need a specialist knowledge of the subject to be able to find the answers. We have as usual compiled a set of clues that are a mix of cryptic and general knowledge and, as before, there are some that are likely to involve research. The number of words and letters in each answer are indicated. There may be the odd hyphen or apostrophe, but these would not occupy a dash and their inclusion is not critical to earning a mark. Incidentally, Chambers Dictionary (Revised 13th Edition) is our main, but not sole, source of reference for definitions.

Marking One mark will be awarded for each correct answer. Half a mark may be given at the judges' discretion for a good try. Half a mark will be deducted for each spelling mistake. Alternatives are not permissible (i.e. in the event of two solutions being given the one directly above the dashes will be accepted as the entrant's answer). Only one entry is allowed per person. The judges' decision in all cases is final.

Prizes First prize: £50, second: £40, third: £30. If two, three or four competitors tie with top marks the relevant prizes will be divided between them. If five or more tie, a draw will be made to decide the winners. To encourage everyone to send in their puzzles we will award five consolation prizes of £10 each chosen at random from the remainder of the entries – regardless of score.

Entry Fee We are asking for an entry fee of £1, but if you have enjoyed the puzzle additional donations would be greatly appreciated. Even if you do not manage to solve all the clues please do send in your entry. Even if your score is on the low side many others may have done no better and each unsubmitted entry means not only that you have had your fun for nothing but also, more importantly, there will be less to donate to the charity.

Gift Aid If you are a UK taxpayer your donation (but not your £1 entry fee) can be increased by 25% by making a Gift Aid declaration. If you wish the charity to benefit in this way please complete the slip at the foot of this page. The slip will be submitted to DEC - Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal..

Copies We do not object to photocopies of the puzzle being taken for friends or relations who wish to have a go - or, indeed, copies being downloaded from the Internet on our Rainbow Charity Puzzles website (at ) - but we will also provide extra copies for this purpose if you send a stamped, addressed envelope. We should perhaps emphasise that the puzzle should not be reproduced for any other purpose, charity or otherwise, without our written permission.

Closing Date Entries must be received by 30 November 2022. We hope that you enjoy our final puzzle.
