NEW DOCU-SERIES EPISODE | 10/15 The Pandemic Paradox - HIV on the Edge: The Magic YearsEmail not displaying correctly?View it in your browserDear colleagues,We are pleased to announce a new episode of our docu-series "The Pandemic Paradox - HIV on the Edge". Over five episodes, we explore the risk of a resurgent HIV/AIDS epidemic four decades after the first case was reported. The documentary features many of the world’s most prominent and impactful voices on HIV/AIDS, and includes interviews with those most at risk from HIV/AIDS in South Africa, Ukraine, and the United States.Today, we launch the third episode:"The Magic Years"?In the third episode, we look at the period of “The Magic Years”, when antiretroviral drug therapies became “game-changing” tools in fighting HIV/AIDS after several years of struggle. These drugs were first far beyond the reach of developing nations, most notably in Africa where AIDS was destabilizing societies and economies. Activists drove down pharmaceutical pricing, and joined forces with African leaders, the United States and other G-7 heads of state, UNAIDS, industry and foundations to press for the launch of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Shortly thereafter, “The Magic Years” saw President George W. Bush launch the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In combination, the Global Fund and PEPFAR have saved millions of lives. The episode closes on the question: why have the lessons of the “Magic Years”—particularly the centrality of U.S. global leadership in battling the AIDS pandemic—gone missing in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic now striking low and middle income countries?? "The magic years were a historic response to a dangerous pandemic. They created PEPFAR and the Global Fund, two monumental structures which for two decades now have guided the global response."Look for the other chapters as they launch through 2020 here: 1: "I Am Worried"Episode 2: "The Plague Years"Episode 3: "The Magic Years"The Pandemic Paradox is the third collaboration between myself and Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist Justin Kenny (Small Footprint Films). Our first GHPC feature film, The New Barbarianism (2017), was awarded the Best Documentary prize at the LA Film Festival, aired on PBS, and was featured in the Christian Science Monitor, PBS NewsHour, and PBS’s Story in the Public Square. As always, I welcome your questions and comments.Sincerely,J.
