CATE Board Reports for April 30-May 2, 2016 Board Meeting at Hyatt Regency Santa ClaraDenise Mikkonen, PresidentSince we last meet, first and foremost thanks to a terrific board we had a fantastic CATE Conference! The halls were brimming with happy learning faces.? Great conversations ensued. There are a great deal of behind the scenes jobs that are happening 24 hours a day once we arrive at the convention from bag stuffing to coffee ordering.? Registration was packed the first hour and things ran much more efficiently than last year- it was a team effort! ?Speaking of team, Michelle, Jan and I were in constant communication, and constant problem solving in regards to timing of functions, speeches and announcements. ?The speakers were terrific; our award winners were very happy and gave wonderful inspiring speeches.? Our Distinguished Service Award was received by Jayne with grace and provided us with much to remember and think about and celebrate. ?The California Writing Project is deeply embedded in all that we do at CATE, many of us being Writing Project Fellows. Thanks to each and every one of you for your hard work, get it done, do it all, never give up attitudes. It is an honor to work with you all. We had our advisory call last week, to prepare for the May meeting.? All deadlines were met for California English and I hope by our meeting your will be able to read some of our talented writers work.? Before our meeting I will be meeting with Michelle and the Hotel/Convention to work on next years convention.? Mary and I plan to meet to add her name to our CATE banking in her capacity as CATE co-treasurer. I’m working on summer writing camps for San Marcos Writing Project, we have 10 camps planned and hope to serve more than 600 students from 2nd to 12th grades.? In as such, I was featured at CWP leader for April HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" have one more session of our Close and Critical Reading Professional Series in PUSD, it is so great to have time to collaborate K-5 about reading.? I have just submitted a proposal for next year using Growth Mindset in the classroom.? I’m also changing grade levels next year moving up with my class to 5th grade, so I am deeply reading and thinking about the standards and curriculum for next year. ?We had our last day with Nancy Frey preparing professional development for next year, focusing on assessment.? We will present to our sites in August. ?It was most enjoyable to work with her this year. Liz McAninch, Past PresidentTrevor Guina, Vice PresidentCarole LeCren, SecretaryAs secretary, I’ve sent out the draft of the board minutes, put together this board report, and looked through the old CATE Macbook that Carrie used as CATE Secretary for old files.Greg Johnson, TreasurerHello All,I just finished up my financial report and thought I’d give you all a chance to look it over prior to arriving at the board meeting. Since I saw you last I have paid lots of bills, combed through convention budgets to make sure line items are properly allocated, and worked with Cindy and Nancy to make sure my figures are accurate and correct. I have also invested in a new printer so hopefully there will be no repeats of the problem I had prior to the last board meeting. I now have several ink cartridges for which I have no working printer, so if you need Canon 225 or 226 ink, please let me know. :)As you know, we will be setting the budget for the next fiscal year at this board meeting, so please take a minute to look this over and consider what we need to do to make next year’s budget more accurate and useful than previous versions. Also, since we had such a good year financially due to the hard work of many on the board and high attendance at CATE 2016, consider what kind of investments or expenditures we can make to ensure CATE continues long term.Thank you,GregAngus Dunstan, Capitol RepCapitol Council’s new six-member board met last month to begin planning our 2016-2017 school year activities. Each one is well informed and enthusiastic, which is especially gratifying since they are all former students of mine! Our newest board member is ready to revitalize the writing contest, and our Vice-President has been approached about chairing CATE 2019 in Burlingame. We have set up a calendar of board meetings, and we’ll begin the new year with a September workshop featuring the five local teachers who led sessions at CATE 2016. See y'all soon,AngusSusan Dillon, Central Rep/CATE 2017 Co-ChairCCCTE Representative ReportMay 2016Greetings,The Central Council enjoyed hosting a reception at the wildly successful CATE 2016 convention in Costa Mesa. Thanks to those present who made it work. We enjoyed welcoming our council’s winners of the CATE creative writing contest April 24 at Rist Hall, Mercy High School. We are grateful to Frannie Chamberlain, our contest coordinator, for making it work. Will Hudd taped the event, as usual, and we will be able to feature the readings very soon on our Facebook account. CCCTE has been very supportive in assisting the CATE 2017 chairs. We had a meeting last Sunday with program chair Bill Foreman, autograph chair Liz McAninch, local registration chair Charles Schaefer, and new teachers table/welcome chair Frannie Chamberlain. We also welcomed a new member to the board, Heather Eastwood, who agreed to be hospitality chair. Thanks, Joan, for forwarding Heather’s contact information to us. We are planning to host some beverage hours throughout our many counties, and, after imbibing or sipping, we will have an unconference. Part of the CATE 2017 vision is to have a running unconference session, so we believe this will be a way to build momentum. We also need to have an election for CCCTE rep to the board. Central is richly represented on the state board, but, in fairness to our members, we need to have a rep who will honor the board meeting commitments. We will get that going asap. [see CATE 2017 Co-Chair report under Kathy Nichols]Janina Schulz, FACET RepFACET Board ReportThe CATE conference was a wonderful experience! I hadn't attended for approximately six years, and I was so energized by the speakers.?We held a spring mixer on March 31 at Gazebo Gardens in?Fresno. This local venue hosts food trucks and has a beer garden on site. We had contacted a young adult author, Heather Demetrios, who enthusiastically agreed to send signed copies of one of her books, I'll Meet You There, for us to give away at our event. We will be reading this book as a small group and meet during the summer for our book club discussion. Heather went to high school in Clovis (city by Fresno) and her book is set in the central valley along highway 99. Many FACET members showed interest in the event, but our turn out ended up rather small. We are hosting a reception for our two CATE award winners, Dr. Alison Mandaville and Irene Santos, on May 5.We are having difficulty recruiting board members. Marina Santos and I have been the only board members in attendance for most of our spring board meetings.?Tonight is my last class for the semester teaching in the credential program at Fresno Pacific University. What a learning experience! I will continue on during both the fall and spring semesters of next school year. I also will be transitioning roles at Edison High. Next year I will teach 2 classes, and during my other 3 class periods I will be an AP Coordinator.?I look forward to seeing you all this weekend.Janina Schulz FACET PresidentJeannine Ugalde, GSDCTE RepThe Greater San Diego Council of Teachers of English celebrated our local winners of the CATE Creative Writing Contest. ?On Friday, March 4 students, parents, teachers, and SD CATE Board Members relished in the presentation of the First, Second, and Third place local recipients in each category. Connections made at recent CATE conventions with San Diego teachers will add four new members to our board this year. ?Carole LeCren and I, Co-Chairs for the 2018 CATE Convention, met to begin early planning, especially gathering key speakers.I gear up again to direct and teach our San Marcos Writing Project's High School Writing Camp in July. ?As August opens I will be participating in SMWP's Advanced Writing Institute ?for NWP's College Ready Writers' Program.??Jeannine UgaldeGSDCTE PresidentKim Flachmann, Kern RepCATE: KERN COUNCIL May 2016Board MembersPresidentKim Flachmannkflachmann@csub.eduVice PresidentJill Hamilton-Bunch jhamilto@pointloma.eduResolutions Chair Robert PolskiRobert_Polski@khsd.k12.ca.usTreasurerGreg JohnsonGreg_Johnson@khsd.k12.ca.usSecretary Crystal Huddlestonchuddleston@Writing Competition Chair Katie McNamaraKatie_Mcnamara@khsd.k12.ca.usMembership Chair Lori CampbellLori_Campbell@khsd.k12.ca.usKHSD Liaisons Vickie SpanosVSpanos@khsd.k12.ca.usKCSOS Liaison Teresa Twisselmantetwisselman@AVID LiaisonBrad Ruffbruff@khsd.k12.ca.usMiddle School LiaisonJulie Paulsenjpaulsen2621@Writing Project Liaison Mark OlsenMark_Olsen@khsd.k12.ca.usPublicity Joan SwensonSwenson@bak.MeetingsFeb 10, 2016: Prep at the Padre for people presenting at CATEMar 8, 2016: Board MeetingMembership DrivesFeb 13, 2016: Kelly GallagherEssay ContestsOn-going in the schoolsOne Book/One Bakersfield: The Big Thirst by Charles FishmanERWC Module distributed to high school and college facultyBook Club MeetingsSept 25: The International Bank of Bob by Bob Harris (One Book/One Bakersfield)Dec 11: Go Set a Watchman by Harper LeeMar 4: The Girl on the Train by Paula HawkinsRecruitmentApril 20, 2016: Postcard Blitz for previous membersUpcoming EventsAugust 19, 2016: Back to School Party at LengthwiseSeptember 23, 2016: Ernest Morrell speaking on At-Risk StudentsMay 27: Book Club, Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi Kern Online Presence KERN CATE: by Kim FlachmannPresident of Kern CouncilMay 2016KERN COUNCILCALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH2015-16 ACTIVITIES2015-16: Jill delivers recruitment speech for CATE at all RIAP activitiesSept 18, 2015: Back-to-School party at Temblor Brewing Company; every Kern County board member brings at least one guest; honor our Writing Project participants and our CATE Excellence in teaching awardees; drawing for paid conference registration and 3 Runner Reader books; 1 ticket per guest; 1 ticket for members; Starbucks cards for those who join CATE on the spotJanuary 2016: Advertise writing competitions, including Runner Reader (see list below, compiled by Tammy McDonel)*Feb 2, 2016: Presenter Prep Night at the PadreWine and Cheese social “Basket of Books” drawingsFebruary 18-20, 2016: CATE state conference; sponsor memberships for college participants; free membership through AVID newsletter; “ditto exchange” for Kern meeting at conference.March 8, 2016: KCTE meeting; debriefing after conferenceLori: Recruit members from BTSA w/ Jan KenneyKeep Facebook presence updated (Lori)Send Summer Recruitment postcard (Lori)*Writing Contests and Possible Rewards: Forthcoming (Katie)[vacant], Redwood RepWell Howdy,I don't know if Joan has already done this but I'll add to the reporting...Redwood Council does not have an acting president or vice-president. ?Bob Chapman had offered to attend CATE BOD meetings representing Redwood for Gini Wozny, but soon afterwards she resigned as president. ?Bob is not willing to be acting president again (he's too busy traveling and/or playing with trains). ?So currently, there is no official leadership for the council. ?However, meetings continue, mostly thanks to Joan Williams but others are chipping in as well. ?We recently had a planning meeting to decide what to do about this issue. ?This Thursday, RCTE is hosting a reception at Plaza Grill in Arcata honoring our Classroom Excellence awardee, Stefanie Watson. ?We are expecting about 30 people, and we have the event catered and a no-host bar. ?We are working on recruiting leadership but it may be a committee style system of leadership for the council for some time. ?As a result, we are not offering a writing contest for this year. ?For the time being, Joan and/or Bob will attend CATE BOD meetings to keep Redwood active on the state level.I think, that about covers it. ?Have fun this weekend! ?I'll be in DC. ?My heart stuff is stable right now but I still do not know if the ablation was successful or not. ?I should know by the end of May. ?I am allowed to travel but not yet to places with questionable health care. ?Miss you folks!BobCourtney Lockwood, Southland RepWhile the SCTE hospitality suite at the CATE Convention was not very effective -- 9:30 at night doesn't work well, especially when the suite room is changed twice -- we did add several interested potential board members to our contact mailing list during the convention.? We are always looking -- during meals, workshops, on the forms filled out -- to find more professionals who are interested in being involved in their regional organization.? Our Henke scholarship honoree, Dr. April Parker, who had not previously been active in SCTE, has agreed to be the membership chair for SCTE.? We are in the process of elections, and we have four persons on our ballot.? Chris Jacobson for TreasurerJennifer Collison for Secretary? April Parker for Membership Chair Felicia Heck for Member-at-LargeWe are conducting the election via e-mail, and ballots are due by the first of June.? At our last board meeting,we discussed how to further celebrate all the SCTE honorees that were recognized at the Convention, but timing is a challenge.? We may invite the honorees to our fall conference to recognize them again publicly. Tracy Sprague, our vice president, has gotten commitments from the major speakers for our fall conference:? Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O'Dell, authors of Writing With Mentors will be keynote speakers and will provide a workshop.? YA author Carrie Arcos (Out of Reach; There Will Come a Time) will be our author speaker.? The fall conference will be October 22 at the UTLA building near downtown Los Angeles. We just had our Spring activity (April 16) -- a private tour of the Robert Mapplethorpe photography exhibit at the Getty Center.? Our tour guide was perfect, and 12 persons is a very good number for a tour.? (Twelve was fewer than we had hoped for, but this seems to be a busy season!)? The Mapplethorpe photos are beautiful, artistic, surprising, and some are rather disturbing, but all are memorable.?? After the tour, most of us joined for lunch in the Getty cafeteria and enjoyed catching up and sharing experiences; we had some new teachers and guests join the group, so it was a good time to get to know them.? After lunch, six of the SCTE-ers stayed and continued to tour the museum, while the others had commitments off the Getty campus.? Our next board meeting is June 11 at Mary Adler's home in Camarillo, where we will hone plans for our fall conference, start to put together our workshop leader list, and discuss what we will do to promote the event.? I will be unable to attend the May CATE board meeting since I am proctoring practice AP tests each weekend.? After May 11, my schedule should lighten up somewhat.? I continue to serve as lead teacher for the Venice High STEMM Magnet and am English department chair.Courtney LockwoodSCTE PresidentCarol Surabian, TUCATE RepTUCATE has been quiet since the convention. ?We are planning a reception soon for our Classroom Excellence Award winner Anabel Reveles. ?Carol Surabian?TUCATE PresidentGina Cole, Upper RepHello Everyone,I want to begin by saying that my colleagues really enjoyed the?CATE Conference.? They always bring back with them some great classroom teaching activities and strategies.? Upper Council has been discussing ideas for a local writing contest.? The English department at Sutter High has been involved in writing and grammar workshops through Clark Consulting.? These workshops focus mainly on meeting the needs of ESL students.? We have also been busy setting up meetings for the 2016-2017 school year.? Upper Council has been reaching out to our current and past Excellence in the Classroom winners to generate more interest in CATE.? Hopefully, we will be able to increase the number of?CATE?members in the Upper Council region.? Patrick Keough, MAL ElementaryBoard Report April/May 2016: MAL ElementaryI enjoyed attending the CATE Convention in February. I had the opportunity to attend a couple of workshops while there, and they seemed to be well received by other attendees. I also gained some valuable experience working in the New Teachers and Membership booths.I have accepted a new position as an “Exploration Teacher” for next year. Our district has committed to developing a model for job-embedded collaboration time for our elementary teachers. Exploration teachers will support this model. We will develop curriculum this summer, and then during the school year, we will be working with students while their teachers are collaborating with colleagues. We will be seeking to give students additional learning experiences around PE, Visual/Performing Arts, and STEM. As part of our curricular development, I will continue to advocate for a strong literacy component in these content areas.Kristy Orona-Ramirez, MAL MiddleMAL Middle UpdateMy site leadership/department chair position on site will continue for the 2015-16 academic year.? I just recently professionally presented at the California Conference on American Indian Education and have secured full funding for professional conference attendance once every school year from the Superintendent of Alvord schools.? I have just recently applied to present at two conferences (NEA, Conference on Ethnic Minorities and Women and National Indian Education Association) and? and I am waiting to hear if my proposals will be accepted.KristyMarina Santos, MAL SecondarySue Sommer, MAL SecondaryMary Adler, MAL College; Co-TreasurerHi everyone,I spent time at the CATE Conference learning more about co-treasury duties from Greg and helping out as best I could with checks, university credits, and registration issues. I presented with a ?high school colleague on "Coaching Writers Toward Improvement.” We had about 50 people come and as far as I could tell, nobody left (yeah!).?I have continued to work with the ERWC Middle School advisor committee to refine resources for regional workshops, and in February-April we conducted a complete middle school series upon request up at beautiful San Luis Obispo, while finishing up the last day of our local middle and high school ERWC workshops in Ventura County.?We have had a good deal of tumultuous news on our campus recently—come Fall 2017, we will have a new President, Provost, and Dean of Academic Affairs. It looks like I will probably continue serving as Interim Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences for another year to help out with the transition. I was also nominated to serve as secretary of the Academic Senate. At the end of March I attended the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference in Los Angeles, where I had the privilege of seeing Simon Ortiz, one of my favorite poets, be recognized for his contributions.?On Friday, April 22, I chaired the first ever Regional Writing Conference, attended by composition faculty from five community colleges and CSU Channel Islands, on the theme of Fostering Equity in Composition. The event was sponsored by a federal HSI grant called ALAS (Aligning Learning with Academic Success) and organized by five colleagues and me. We had eight panel sessions and a wonderful keynote speech by Dr. Sugie Goen-Salter (Chair of English at San Francisco State University) called, “Hanging Out With Us Long Enough: Equity and Opportunity in Composition.” Over 50 faculty members attended, and it looks like there is enough momentum to continue the conference next year.At the end of this week, prior to the board meeting, I will attend the High Impact Practices conference at CSU Fullerton.I am currently gearing up to facilitate a faculty writing retreat in early June, teach a summer class, ?and collaborate with my fellow CWP teachers in the summer writing camp at the CLU campus in Thousand Oaks. It’s rewarding to know that one of my former student teachers, now a seasoned middle school teacher at Frank Intermediate in Oxnard, will be joining us as a co-teacher this year.Looking forward to seeing everyone at the end of the week!Best,Mary AdlerRichard Hockensmith, MAL UnspecifiedCarmen Carrillo, MAL UnspecifiedJill Hamilton-Bunch, MAL Small CouncilJoan Williams, MembershipCATE MEMBERSHIP REPORTMay 2016# COUNCIL5/148/1412/142/155/159/1512/152/16 5/16+/-1 Redwood333526223433342624-22 Upper18171812222114616+103 Capitol727162319290903272+404 Central238233274245412406472302333+315 Fresno312832177476711936+176 TUCATE11912193128261016+67 Kern373941619988973662+268 Southland307301274169278281310232618+3869 San Diego12311711258656664109140+3150 Out-of-state141516141722231526+11 55 Libraries151514141414 141112+1 99 Comps444332221-1TOTAL 9018848856621141112712188001356+556Worked with Precision and council membership chairs to edit and update the rosters. This is an ongoing challenge, but with local councils looking at their individual rosters too, we are making significant progress in having an accurate roster.Received Precision’s monthly roster updates and bad addresses and worked to resolve the inaccuracies and inconsistencies.Assisted members with questions and concerns regarding their memberships. NOTE: Councils need to follow the procedures outlined in board policy regarding reporting new and renewed memberships. Please check CATE Board Policies for instructions regarding submitting names and payment for new and renewing members. Send these memberships to Precision as soon as possible and send me a copy of the report. Memberships have still not been reported for some of the conferences. We must do a better job of serving our members!Participated in the Advisory Board conference call.Submitted our roster to NCTE for consideration for an award for membership growth.Assisted Redwood Council in planning a reception for our classroom excellence award winner.Reviewed membership section of cateweb and will suggest some changes and updates to make the membership section stronger.Reviewed the membership information on evaluation forms to update and pull together a list of individuals who are interested in becoming more involved CATE. I will pass the information on to councils and request that they contact the individuals as soon as possible.Michelle Berry, Convention CoordinatorBoard Report – Convention Coordinator May 2016CATE 2016We cannot give enough credit to Jan Stallones, CATE 2016 Chair, for her incredible work ethic, which resulted in our most successful convention in recent memory. While we’ll hear specific numbers (attendance and profit) during the meeting, suffice it to say that her reaching out to schools and districts, personally delivering flyers and “selling” CATE’s professional development opportunities, made a huge difference. Her work paid off in an attendance boost of almost 50% over last year. Collaborative problem solving, and flexibility when things don’t go as originally planned, are critical gifts in the dance of chairing a convention, and she is a master of those qualities. I cannot give enough thanks to each of you who came forward to drive books to convention, work the reg desk, membership or new teachers’ booth, host hospitality, assist whenever and wherever needed, especially but not limited to Denise, Carole, Jayne, Richard, Joan, Bill, Angus, Trevor, and the rest of the Board who made this convention a success as well. Thanks also for your patience and understanding as we dealt with hotel issues that no one could have foreseen: rooms not available though reserved, ceilings falling, substandard food, for example. Most importantly, thanks for your support of attendees: giving directions, offering advice, being accessible, presenting workshops – all these things and others make for the success of CATE 2016. As for the Hilton OC/Costa Mesa, the hotel bill, 34 pages long and rife with errors in multiple drafts, has finally been sorted out and paid. Joan and I gleaned convention evaluations for correct emails and phone numbers of members. Further, we kept a list of those who stated they were interested in being more involved in their councils/future conventions, and those names will be given to council reps to follow-through.In addition to issues hotel-related, there are some we should discuss. CATE lost potentially serious money because the registrar had no way to verify when someone said they were a member and therefore paid member registration. As Joan has stated, not getting the list of attendees at local council events who pay for membership hurts CATE. Another issue: there were very large crowds the first two hours at the registration desk. It has been suggested we reconsider opening reg Thursday evening for a few hours as we have in the past, to take some of that burden off Friday morning. The Pearson reception will be discussed in committee as well, and we’ll likely have some recommendations after talking about these and several other suggestions made at and since convention.CATE 2017There is a hotel tour scheduled on Friday at 4:30, which was scheduled at that time for several reasons. I’m thrilled with the progress of co-chairs Kathy and Susan for 2017! Their speakers are confirmed and contracts are coming in! The two of them, and sometime myself, meet weekly on Google Hangouts to go over duties performed, status updates, to brainstorm additional ideas. This next convention is in very capable hands! CYRM has assigned CATE “our” award winner, so we are good to go! I have successfully renegotiated the contract to increase our room block, previously at 450, and some additional breakout rooms. Moving forwardAs her previous contract expires this year, I will be offering an action item that our registrar’s contract for 2017-2019 be renewed. At our President’s request, given the resignation of our exhibits manager, I have sent out inquiries to various organizations (Groups360, Curtin, other subject associations) for recommendations on exhibits/advertising/sponsorship manager candidates. Additionally, I have been given a few names of people who may be interested in the job from members of the Board. After the convention committee meets, reviews, and makes recommendations on the present job description and commission rates, I will be asking the Board for two things regarding this: the acceptance of a subcommittee to help select the person CATE hires, and the authority to hire that person, hopefully by July 1. In the meantime, Cindy has temporarily changed the contact for exhibits inquiries to my email address. She has also had to rebuild that website on a new server as it has been hacked three times in the past year, wreaking havoc on CATEweb as well. Also at the President’s request, I have created and distributed a survey to our exhibitors of this 2015 and 2016 to solicit suggestions and comments about their relationship to our convention. I will report those at the September meeting when I hope to have received more responses.CATE 2019 and 2021 hotel contracts with the Hyatt Regency SFO (Burlingame) have been signed. As that site is undergoing major renovation and doesn’t reopen until May 24, I will do a site visit after that week. For CATE 2020, Groups360 sent out RFPs to 24 SoCal sites. We’ll discuss the successful proposals in committee and report out our recommendation after that. Groups360 has also been helpful in contracting our Board meeting sites for the upcoming year, one of which will be at convention, and another at our 2018 site in San Diego. The other two meetings will be divided between south and north. I should have those nailed down by Saturday’s meeting.Again, thanks to ALL Board members for your commitment to CATE, and to your hard work in creating the success of 2016 and future conventions!Cindy Conlin, Webmaster/RegistrarNancy Himel, Exhibits ManagerJanis Stallones, CATE 2016 ChairKathy Nichols, CATE 2017 Co-ChairWith a fantastic CATE 2016 behind us, we are now working in high gear to get ready for 2017.
