WELCOMEWelcome to the 47th Eastern Economic Association Annual Meetings that will be held virtually. Our incoming President-Elect Judy Chevalier, session chairs, organizers, and review committee have done a superb job putting together this year’s program, which I hope you will find as intellectually exciting as I do. The program furthers the EEA’s tradition of encouraging intellectual debate, open to all points of view. I would particularly like to welcome those presenting at the conference from other regions of the country and other parts of the world. The Eastern Economic Journal, our Association’s publication, has continued to flourish under the editorial leadership of Cynthia Bansak and Alan Zebedee. Two officers of the Association, Alexandre Olbrecht, our Executive Director, and Natalia Smirnova, our Treasurer, deserve special thanks for their ongoing work tending to the business of the Association. Finally, I would like to thank The Anisfield School of Business at Ramapo College of New Jersey, the College’s Board of Trustees and its President, Peter Mercer, for providing a home base for the EEA. The Eastern Economic Association Board of Directors wishes Peter Mercer a happy retirement. Ramapo College has given the Association a warm welcome. As I look back on our conference in Boston, Massachusetts, which was held one year ago, I am reminded at how different the world and our conference looks like. Yet despite all the challenges faced by the EEA members, a large contingent has managed to continue our Association’s history of presenting new and exciting research, including sessions discussing the economic effects of Covid-19.I have greatly enjoyed and learned from my experience as President. Keeping the EEA functioning well for its role in the intellectual life of our profession is an important task and one handled very well on an ongoing basis by the officers, editors, and members of the board of directors. I am proud to have been part of this effort.Peter DiamondMITEastern Economic Association PresidentEASTERN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATIONBoard of DirectorsEXECUTIVE COMMITTEEPresident: Peter Diamond, MITPresident-Elect: Brad Humpreys, West Virginia UniversityVice-President: Judy Chevalier, Yale UniversityPast-President: Joseph Altonji, Yale UniversityExecutive Director: Alexandre Olbrecht, Ramapo College of New JerseyTreasurer: Natalia Smirnova, University of ConnecticutEastern Economic Journal Co-Editors:Cynthia Bansak, St. Lawrence University Allen Zebedee, Clarkson UniversityDIRECTORS Amelie Constant, Princeton UniversityDhaval Dave, Bentley UniversityFrank Gunter, Lehigh UniversityJoyce Jacobsen, Hobart and William Smith CollegesRobert Scott III, Monmouth UniversityAlice Sheehan, University of New HampshireEmeritus Members and ex officio to the board of DirectorsMary Lesser, Executive Director Emeritus, Lenoir-Rhyne University and Emeritus, Iona CollegeAlexandre Olbrecht, Executive Director Emeritus (2015-2017; will reinstate when term as Executive Director ends), Ramapo College of New JerseyPARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONSAssociation for Integrity and Responsible Leadership in Economics and Associated Professions (AIRLEAP)The Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE)The Committee on the Status of Women in Economics Profession (CSWEP)Global Labor Organization (GLO)Issues in Political Economy (IPE) The NYC Computational Economics & Complexity Workshop (NYC)The Union for Radical Political Economics (URPE)2020 Program Organizing CommitteeChair: Judy Chevalier, Yale UniversityClare Battista?(battista_clare@smc.edu), Santa Monica CollegeAmelie Constant?(afconstant299@), Princeton UniversityTerry-Ann Craigie, Connecticut CollegeGermán G. Other session organizers and those listed as the program committee did much of the work. A continuing thanks needs to be made to our organizing committee who through the years have been an instrumental part of building the conference program. Those individuals are:Ari Belasen, Southern Illinois University- EdwardsvilleJuan Cabrera, Ramapo College of New JerseyConstance Crawford, Ramapo College of New JerseyNancy Fox, Saint Joseph’s UniversityJulio Huato, St. Francis CollegeAnna Ichim, Missouri State UniversityDonn Johnson, Quinnipiac University Jane Ruseki, West Virginia UniversityAlexandre Olbrecht, Ramapo College of New JerseyRobert H. Scott III, Monmouth UniversityAlice Sheehan, University of New HampshireThe content for this guide and its online version were produced at the Anisfield School of Business at Ramapo College of New Jersey. The Association thanks its Webmasters, Robert Josic and Angela Moore, and its very sleep deprived volunteer student assistant, Alejandro Ramos. Organizing this year’s conference has been an interesting challenge for me and some of the other major contributors, Al Campbell, Terry-Ann Craigie, Steve Deloach, and Jimena Gonzalez-Ramirez. I’d like to thank them for their support, patience and contributions in making this year’s program happen. I’d like to personally thank everyone who contributes their time and energy in making this Association be successful. I usually mention the enormous help of Donn Johnson at this time, but I’ll also give a hearty congratulations to Hudson Olbrecht, who at 7 years old is starting to provide technical support to me. It is only a matter of time before he knows how to use technology that I will never understand given my advanced age of 42 years old. In closing, I hope you enjoy this conference and your time in your living room, den, home office, or sadly if you have been relegated to the basement. If my staff and I can do anything to make your time at the EEA meetings more enjoyable, please let us know. Alexandre OlbrechtEEA Executive DirectorAbsenteeism / ProfessionalismThe Eastern Economic Association does its best to ensure that sessions are filled at the time of acceptances. However, we cannot guarantee that presenters, chairs, and discussants fulfill their professional obligation of attendance and performance. In the case of a chair being absent, the first available presenter shall act as chair. Please inform the EEA staff of any non-participation by a scheduled presenter, chair and discussant, as this information contributes to subsequent acceptance decisions by the program committee.
