Late Start Times for Warm-Up & Cool-Off – Skip Rutledge – Recommended PASSES The proposal would be to start no earlier than 9:30, or even better 10:00.?The rationale would be to spare those of us with a long drive from the south, east or north from getting up before dark to drive into our campuses for our students.? I’m sure others appreciate another hour of sleep as well.?Further rationale is that the day is very short with just four preliminary rounds and the shortest awards ceremony possible, so we still get out pretty early.? Meaning those of us who then drive back home still get in at a good hour even after a meal.An additional benefit is that this helps our wellness effort, and more sleep promotes safer travel and smarter performance and learning in rounds.2. Judge Constraints Proposal – Rolland Petrello- Recommended PASSES 1. These requests are granted at the discretion of the Tournament DirectorA. Tournament Director will make every effort to accommodate reasonable requests whenever possible.B. In the event a Tournament Director rejects a request, it can be appealed through the standard PSCFA appeal process (Ombuds, etc…)2. Requests must be submitted in writing with explanation (via Email, Entry System Message, etc…)3. Request Types (not an exhaustive list):A. Affiliation1. Current coach of student2. Former Coach (within last year)3. Perception – Past coaching relationship would be perceived as a conflict of interest.B. Personal Connection1. Close personal relationship (family, romantic, etc…)2. Former teammatesC. Code of Conduct (Title IX, etc…)1. If this is based on behavior related to PSCFA Code of Conduct, PSCFA’s procedures must be followed.2. If this involves a formal process on campus, nondisclosure rules and confidentiality rules are respected.D. A judge may request a constraint for themselves against schools or competitors they feel unable to judge fairly. 3. Mental Health and Student Wellness Proposal - Amanda Ozaki – Recommended with number 4 PASSES COMBINED with proposal 4 Proposal: The PSCFA should adopt a statement expressing its commitment to promoting student well-being and mental health. This statement should encourage tournament directors to take material steps towards accommodating and valuing student well-being and mental health during competition.?Statement for Adoption:The PSCFA is dedicated to excellence in communication, competition, and academic achievement. To promote student well-being and mental health at high levels of competition, the PSCFA encourages tournament directors to make every effort to promote mental health and student safety. This dedication should?be materially expressed by tournament accommodations. These accommodations can include but is not limited to the following:-emphasizing the importance of self-care and awareness at tournaments?-accommodating students by providing a quiet room at tournaments-accommodating students by not penalizing them via judge ranking for leaving before, during, or after competing speeches?(We discussed removing the “during” from this recommendation, but in the event a student has a panic attack during a speech, I believe leaving would be less distracting than a student having an attack during the round. Thus, I think there should be further discussion on this.)?-accommodating requests for reasonable time for practicing grounding methods if triggering events arise.?4. PSCFA Open Door Policy – Ashley Cuevas NuckelsProposal: To add language into the bylaws to encourage PSCFA Tournament Directors to adopt specific measures to support mental health of the community during a tournament. Justification: In order to codify and encourage the prioritization of mental health within our community and following the precedent of other National Organizations.Proposed Language:PSCFA tournament directors should make every effort to support and encourage the maintenance of the mental health of the community by doing one or more of the following:Have a designated quiet room.Incorporate language onto Individual Event ballots that the judge reads in the round which includes the following statement.PSCFA acknowledges that the topics and literature of certain pieces can be very triggering for certain audiences. In the interest of supporting and encouraging the maintenance of the mental health of students, audience members and competitors are allowed to quietly leave the room in between speeches if triggered by a performance in order to ground and collect themselves. Competitors should be allowed to re-enter the competition room in between speeches. Judges should not punish or reprimand competitors for doing so. If the competitor requests it, Judges should give students a moment to ground themselves before a speech. From the New Ideas Meeting-Ad Hoc Committee to revise the Scholar Award – Roger, Mike K., Kevin, Ashley, Das, & Christian From the Ballot Panel - PSCFA president to appoint an ad hoc committee to create potential ballot standards for future PSCFA tournaments – Allison will do so.
