Exploring Cultures Around the World
Exploring Cultures Around the World!
In Nectar in a Sieve, we learn about the Indian-Hindu beliefs through Rukmani and her family as they struggle to escape poverty. Unfortunately, poverty is not exclusive to small villages but runs rampant throughout the world. This is just one shared experience between languages, cultures, and countries. The widespread use of technological advances like the Internet and cell phones, has exposed the world to many traditions and values from small corners of the world that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Your assignment is to explore a culture through several different avenues: the Internet, magazines, books, television, and interviews. You will need to use at least two of the sources (different ones) above to complete the assignment (if you would like to use more than two, please do!).
Directions:
Within your group of three or four people you will explore a culture of your choosing from the approved list. Then, each member of your group will be assigned a different aspect of the culture to research, and prepare a presentation. Each person will be graded on the quality of his or her own presentation and work.
Below each section is listed along with the topics that person is expected to present.
1. Traditions 2. Entertainment 3. Politics
-Religious traditions -Music & Dance -Type of Government
-Holidays -Movies & Television Programs -Political Parties
-Languages -Sports: professional & recreational -Political Affiliations
-Foods -Theatre -Prominent Policies/Laws
-Clothing -Health Care: availability, cost, quality
Project Components:
Each group member will need the following 4 components for the project:
1. A bibliography
- A typed list of your two sources. Remember, they must be from different types of media! You may use the Internet, magazines, books, television, and personal interviews.
- The bibliography is due on February 15th
2. A written report
- Must by typed, at least two pages (double-spaced).
- The written report is a short, typed report of the information you will be presenting on your portion of the project. Each person will turn in their own portion of the written report.
- The written report is due on February 22nd
3. A visual
- To be used during your presentation.
- Use your imagination (and your research, of course!) to decide what you will use. Things like authentic food or clothing, photographs, charts and graphs, or short powerpoint presentations are acceptable. Remember, it needs to be school appropriate!
4. The presentation itself!
- Make sure you cover all of the aspects outlined for your section of the culture.
- Must include a visual of some sort.
- Use good presenting skills, such as; projecting your voice and speaking clearly, making eye contact with the audience, good posture, no gum chewing, etc.
- Your group will present on February 23rd or 24th. All digital materials that you may be using for your presentation are due on February 22nd NO EXCEPTIONS!
You and your group members will become class experts of a culture from the following list. No country/culture will be used more than once, so please come up with a few options.
