William and Francis Graham

William and Francis Graham

Early Lack Township Cumberland County

Spruce Hill Township – Present Day Juniata County

1st Generation William Graham and his wife Ann

2nd Generation – The Youngest Son

The son of William and Ann is known in many biographical sketches of himself and his children, as Squire Graham or William Graham Esq. It is very important to understand this reference.

• “…William was born in that part of Cumberland County now included in Juniata County. He was through life a farmer, cultivating and improving the extensive land purchase of his father. He also owned a flourmill and a distillery, and erected the first stone building in that section. He was for many years a justice of the peace, and was known far and wide as ‘Squire Graham. He participated in the Revolutionary war, being an Ensign and later as Captain in the Continental army, and in the spring of 1780, after arriving in Kentucky, was drafted and remained for one year to fight Indians. ‘Squire Graham married Fanny Lyons, a native of Ireland, who came to this country when she was twelve years old, and was a sister of William Lyons, the husband of Rebecca, sister of William Graham. The children of William and Fanny Graham were: John; James; William; Samuel; Alexander; and Nancy (Mrs. James Turbett). ‘Squire Graham was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, in which he held the positions of elder and trustee. He voted with the Whig party. His death occurred April 4th 1813; his wife died May 4th 1839. (Runk 1897)

• “…Fanny Lyon married William Graham, Esq., already mentioned, and they are the grandparents of Dr. G. M. Graham, of Port Royal.” (Ellis and Hungerford 1886)

• “… James Lyon emigrated from Ireland in 1763, and in 1768 was in possession of two hundred acres of land near what is now Anderson Station. On March 4, 1787, he took out a warrant for one hundred acres, and again, July 9, 1787, another hundred. James Lyon lived and died on the land he located, and left seven children----William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Nancy, Isabella, Mary and James----of whom Margaret, his second child, married John Oliver, who located near the Lyon homestead, now Oliver township. William, the eldest son, warranted four hundred acres of land March12, 1794, and lived on the present Silas Glasgow farm. He married Rebecca Graham and died in 1827. (Ownes 1886)

This establishes that William, the son of William and his wife Ann, is also known as William Esq. in biographical sketches, but not all sketches. This causes some confusion, which requires more detailed assessments of the various sketches and their context. William Esq. was cultivating and improving the extensive land purchase of his father, William. William Esq. is also the grandfather of William Patton, who is the son of Samuel Graham and Isabelle Patton. Samuel is the 4th and oldest son of William Esq. and Francis.

Another William Graham: Who is this William?

There is another reference of a William Graham in current day Juniata and Mifflin Counties. “William Graham married Jean White of Rye Twp on April 5th 1784.” (Perry 1778-1793). William Esq. family records and all other sources show William Esq. and Francis married in 1779, and that they were still a union until William Esq. died in 1813. William Esq.’s father, William who was married to Ann, if he married a 2nd time, would have been at least 64 years old in 1784. Finally, source references have both William Esq. and his father being in Lack Township in the 1770’s, and there is no record of either men being in the Kishacoquilla Valley Mifflin County area at this time.

• We don’t know this William’s age in 1784. One reference made it circa 1757, but this can not be validated. We know he was from the Kishacoquilla Valley in 1784. Kishacoquilla Valley is to the North and West of the Tuscarora Mountains through Derry Township, adjoining Lack and Fermanagh Townships Cumberland County. Today this Valley runs through Armagh, Derry, Brown, Oliver, Union and Grandville Townships of Mifflin County, from Milroy to Lewistown. Rye Township was part of Cumberland County, which adjoined Tyrone Township, and is today Rye Township Perry County, adjacent to East Pennsboro Cumberland County.

Rebecca Graham: Is Rebecca William Esq.’s Sister?

• “…William Lyon married Rebecca Graham, sister of William Graham, Esq., of Tuscarora, and did surveying under Armstrong in Juniata. His son, George A., was cashier of the Carlisle Bank…” (Ellis and Hungerford 1886)

• “…William, grandfather of William P.; John; James; Alice (Mrs. William Stewart), of Turbett Township; and Rebecca (Mrs. William Lyons), of Carlisle, Pa. William Graham was a devout member of the Presbyterian Church.” (Ellis and Hungerford 1886)

According to the tax-lists for Milford Township on slaves and servants within the present limits of Juniata County, William Graham is listed as having a servant in 1775 and 1776. No value was listed.

There are a number of references that Rebecca Graham, who married William Lyon, as being the sister of either William Esq. or William Graham. But there are also other sources with no references between Rebecca and any William. It is not clear which William is Rebecca’s brother. Family records do not support William Esq. having a sister William, nor do the records of William’s Esq.’s father William.

Since Rebecca Graham did in fact marry William Lyon, and that William Lyon is in fact related to William Esq.’s wife Francis Lyon. William’s father James is Francis’s brother. You can assume this family connection is how Rebecca married William. But then there’s the Lyon family, and their physical locations at the time the relationships may have been developed.

In the 1850 census for Cumberland County, John and Mary listed a Martha Sheffler, age 20, born about 1839, living with them.

In 1860 John and Kate were living next door to John and Mary. Also living with John and Kate in 1860 were Ann M. Hoover, age 19, born about 1841; Martha Whitmer, age 8, born about 1852; and Alexander Lereigh, age 17, born about 1843. In 1880 while in Nebraska, there is a Melinda Graham, age 18, born about 1858 in PA, living with John and Kate, and her relationship is listed as servant. The entire family of John and Kate moved to Nebraska sometime during the 1870s. Of John and Kate’s children: John A. S. married Mary Griffith, and they had three children; their home is in Oak Precinct. Thomas T. married Josie Lineback. Mary N. married James Griffith, they had two children, and their residence is in Colorado.

It is unknown how many of John’s and Mary’s 12 children stayed. We know of Alfred, Thomas, John, and George, but we don’t know about any other men before 1850. That’s four men out of 12 kids, and who knows how many females there were were. We do know that John Edmund and George McCulloch Graham left Cumberland County, and their families were raised elsewhere. So, I will need to know more about John’s and Mary’s family before 1850, and track Alfred and Thomas to see who stayed in Cumberland County and populated the area.

I believe that John Edmund B. Graham is the son of John and Mary. It starts with the similarities between John and Mary’s son George’s biography, and the biography of John of Nebraska. This includes the dates and relocation to Carlisle. Finally, their mother’s names; In George’s biography it’s Mary, and in John’s it’s Polly. Polly was a common girl's name, and it is a diminutive form of Mary. I’m certain that John and George are brothers.

John E.B. Graham

[4] “…born June 25, 1826, in Juniata County, Pa., in which place he also received the rudiments of his education, which was afterward somewhat more completed in Cumberland County, where his father moved when he was about fourteen years of age. …It was on the 1st of March, 1855, that the hopes and desires of our subject and Miss Kate Hemminger were consummated in plighted faith and recorded vows, which bound them as one until death should separate. Their union has been gladdened by the advent of eleven children, of whom six sons and two daughters are still living--John A. S., Thomas T., Jacob H., Mary N., Samuel L., Edmond B., Fannie E. and George H. From the time of marriage until the year 1869, our subject continued to reside on the old homestead and to work the home farm, but at that time he turned westward, settled at Lincoln…

…The father of our subject was John Graham, born in Juniata County, Pa., about the year 1780, removing to Cumberland County, same State, in 1840 where he continued to reside until 1866, when he went to his rest, at the age of eighty-seven years. His lifelong occupation was that of farming, in which he had been fairly prosperous. The partner of his life was Miss Polly Turbett, who was born about the year 1788, and died Sept. 1, 1861. Their home circle comprised twelve children, and it was their privilege to bring all but one of them to maturity.”

“ [5] Obituary for Dr. George McCulloch Graham: DR. George McCulloch Graham was the youngest son of John and Mary Graham, and was born March 21, 1829, in the Tuscarora Valley, on the farm now owned by Jonathan Swartz. [Died August 2, 1894] He first went to school in an old clover mill on the Hedding place, which is now owned by Menno Esh. After that he was sent for a short time to a school house near where Samuel Hoffman’s coach shop now stands, until the first school house at Spruce Hill was built, which was much nearer to his home. Among his earliest teachers were James S. Patton and James Liggett, whom he often spoke of with much respect.

In the spring of 1843 the family moved to Cumberland County to a farm near Carlisle. Here he spent seven happy years of boyhood. He enjoyed farm life and work. During this period of his early life a plowing match took place under the management of the Cumberland County Agricultural Society, where he appeared as a competitor, won the highest prize, and received a certificate, naming him as “the best ploughman in Cumberland County.”

William Graham Family

I located a William Graham, age 43, born about 1807, and who lives in Greenwood Township Juniata County in 1850. Greenwood is two townships to the north east of our William’s origins. Here’s where it gets weird, this William has a wife Frances. [6] There family is as follows.

William: age 43, farmer, born about 1807

Frances: age 40, born about 1810 – In the 18609 census Frances age is listed as 52

Enos, age 22, born about 1828

Susannah, age 12, born about 1838

Nancy, age 10, born about 1840

Ellen, age 8, born about 1842

Delilah, age 6, born about 1844

Rebecca, age 4, born about 1846

Frances, age 2, born about 1848, male

Elizabeth, age 7, born about 1853

If this William and his wife Frances is William Esq. 3rd son, he would have been born 6 years before William Esq. died. But I can’t get over the coincidences between the wives name. This may or may not be father and son. There is little or no other data on William Esq.’s son William; other information of his occupation, or most likely his holdings in Turbett, Spruce Hill and Milford Township areas of Juniata County. [7] “…William, son of William Graham, erected grist and saw-mills in 1813, which were continued by his sons, then by Yost Yoder, John Esh; now Benjamin Hertzler; but the mills have been abandoned for several years.” If this is William Esq., son of William of Tuscarora valley, the William Esq. built a grist and saw mill the year he died; 1813. [8] “Taxable Industries - The tax-lists of Milford Township from l763 to 1831 show assessments on the following in addition to lands and stock. Those that fell into Turbett in 1817 are marked "Tt." Spruce Hill was formed out of Turbett and Beale out of Milford at dates later than these lists.

Grist Mills: Graham, John, William and Samuel, Tt., 1817-28, and Graham, William, 1813-16.

Saw Mills: Graham, William, Tt., 1813-16, Graham, John, William and Samuel, Tt., 1817-28, and Graham, William, Jr., Tt., 1829-31.

Stores and Merchants: Graham, William, 1776. (Squire Graham), Stuart, William, 1794-1804. (Married Alice Graham)

Distilleries: Graham, Hamilton, l794-1804 (Who is Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton, William’s (Squire) son?), Graham, John, Tt., 1809-31, Graham, William, Tt., 1787, '96, 1809, '15 , and Graham, William, Tt., 1823-25

Turbett Distilleries after 1817: Graham, Samuel & William, 1820-22.

Except for Hamilton; Squire Graham died in 1813, so this references to the other Graham’s would have to be his sons; John, William, and Samuel.

There is now two other Graham’s in the same area as William; Peter and Hamilton.

[10] Samuel: Fourth son of Squire William Graham, was born in Juniata County, and received his education in the subscription schools of Spruce Hill Township. On attaining manhood, he made farming his occupation, in which he continued throughout, his life. Be owned and cultivated 184 acres of land in Spruce Hill Township, which he greatly improved. Mr. Graham held various township offices, including that of school director. He was a Whig, and subsequently became a member of the Know-Nothing party.

He was married, on the farm on which William P. Graham now resides, to Isabella, daughter of William Patton, a native of Spruce Hill Township. Her father was an ensign and quartermaster in the Revolutionary War, under Generals Porter and Armstrong. This Mr. Patton was the great-grandfather of W. A. Patton, of Port Royal, Juniata County. The children of Samuel and Isabella (Patton) Graham are: Rebecca, deceased; Frances; Martha; William P.; Samuel, of Spruce Hill Township; and Payson, who resides on the homestead farm; besides two who died in infancy. After the war, Mr. Graham remained on the homestead farm until 1870, when he removed to the farm of ninety-one acres on which he still resides.
