NAACP PA REQUEST MEETING WITH SENATOR EICHELBERGER

Media, PA: The NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference of Branches has contacted the office of State Senate Education Chair, John Eichelberger and requested to meet with the Senator over remarks made at his Town Hall in western Cumberland County. “We take this very seriously,” stated Dr. Joan Evelyn Duvall-Flynn, state president of NAACP PA and chair of the Education Committee for the organization. We spoke with the Senator’s office last week to express our concerns and to request a meeting with the Senator.”

“It is the obligation of the NAACP to collect facts prior to taking direct action on any issue,” Duvall-Flynn said. “Because the chairman of the Senate Education Committee drives educational policy decisions in the Commonwealth, it is critical that the person in this position understands basic education civil rights. NAACP PA wants the Senator to fully explain his thinking and his position on education in Pennsylvania. We do not want anyone with negative perceptions about our children to have power and influence over matters of life and death for them such as the nature and quality of their education. We also want to understand his theory on school funding,” stated Duvall-Flynn.

NAACP PA believes that school children are especially vulnerable to the kinds of cruel statements that are becoming common in public rhetoric today. The public should be aware that following the Nov. 8 election, the Association has received a noticeable increase in the number of reports of overt acts of racism and racist remarks being made in schools across the commonwealth.

“Direct threats to children have caused Governor Wolf and the Department of Education to develop an emergency intervention plan for schools to employ when such events occur,” Duvall-Flynn said.

Governor Wolf’s Safe Schools Response Plan is available on the home page of the NAACP PA web site at . NAACP PA urges anyone knowing of racists behaviors in a school to have the school administration access this plan and also to report the incident to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

According to the Governor’s Safe Schools Response Plan, “This supportive resource has been developed in collaboration with the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP), and is available, at no cost, to students, parents/guardians and school districts across the state of Pennsylvania. Messages can be left 24 hour a day, seven days a week, and will be returned Monday-Friday during normal business hours. The Consultation Line number is 1-866-716-0424.”
