| |This lesson incorporates skills and vocabulary |

|Essential Skills Focus: |learned in previous measurement lessons. |

|Computer Use (using a website), | |

|Continuous Learning (knowing how to gain |Put the following units of measure on the board in a random fashion: millilitres, cups, ounces,|

|access to resources) |pounds, grams, kilograms, miles, kilometres, meters, feet, and yards. Also put two headings on |

|Numeracy (copying numbers, rounding) |the board: Imperial and Metric. Ask students to tell you which units are metric and which are |

| |imperial. Ask students when they use these units: i.e. shopping, cooking, sewing, construction,|

|Task: Use a website to convert measurements |driving, etc. |

|between metric and imperial | |

| |Ask students which unit they are most familiar with. Ask them which one they see most often in |

| |Canada (at the store or at work). Ask them if they ever wanted to know how much an imperial |

|Purpose: Students will |measurement was in metric or vice versa. Explain that we will be using the internet to change |

| |one to the other. |

|Navigate to a website. | |

|Read the questions on the paper. |Show students the website: (click on calculator) on the LCD projector. |

|Put in the number into the correct place on |Have students tell you the units of measure they see on the screen. Have students guess/explain|

|the website to convert it. |what the titles “Length”, “Weight”, and “Volume” mean by looking at the units in that category. |

|Write the required information on the paper.| |

|Ask and answer questions, such as “How many | |

|cm in a foot?” |Have students give you conversion examples they want to know (For example: How many cm in a |

| |ft?). Put in those conversions into the “conversion calculator”. Ask students to read out the |

|Materials: |answers to you from the screen. |

|Sheets, computers, LCD projector | |

| |Do the questions on the sheet together (Students do not have the sheet yet). Ask students to |

|Learning Style: |read out the answers to you. |

|Visual, auditory | |

| |Hand out the sheets. (Note: There is a spelling variance in the website and the sheet in meter |

| |and metre, etc. because it is an American site.) Have students work in pairs sharing a computer|

| |to complete the sheet. |

|Time: |When they are finished, have students work with their partner asking each other different |

|60 minutes – first day |conversion questions. |

|30 minutes – second day | |

| |On the next day, for a listening/speaking activity, have students who were away listen to |

| |students who did the activity and write down the numbers |

| | |

| |As a whole class activity, round the answers to the nearest one decimal place (For example, the |

| |exact number 1.60946 given on the website is about 1.6). |

| | |

| |Debrief: |

| |Language Component: |

| |What skill did you use in this activity? (I used the computer to convert/change measurements.) |

| |What questions do you ask if you want to know what a measurement is in metric? |

| |Examples: |

| |You are reading a recipe. It says 8 oz. You want to ask your friend how many ml that is. |

| |(How many ml is 8 oz?) |

| |You are grocery shopping. The price is $2.39/lb. You want to ask your friend what this is in |

| |kg? |

| |(About how many kg is 1 lb?) |

| |You are at work. A memo says you need to say back 3 feet. You want to ask your co-worker how |

| |many metres that is. |

| |(How many metres is 3 ft?) |

| |Your co-worker says that Brandon is about 120 miles. You want to know how many km that is. |

| |(How many km is 120 miles?) |

| | |

| |Transfer: |

| |Ask students when they might want to use this website (to understand prices, distances,|

| |lengths, amounts better at work, at the store, or with friends). |

| |Follow-up: |

| |Practice measuring things in the classroom in imperial. Ask “About how much is this in metric?”|
