Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese

holidays. It is a time of feasting with family, celebration, fireworks,

and gift-giving. The holiday begins this year on February 14, the first

day of the new moon. The celebration lasts for 15 days, ending on

the day of the full moon with a Lantern Festival and the familiar

dancing dragon performances.

2010 celebrations mark the Year of the Tiger. Legend has it that in

ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese

New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one.

He announced that the people born in each animal's year would

have some of that animal's personality. Those born in tiger years

are natural leaders and excel as actors, pilots, writers, and managers.

They are authoritative, courageous, emotional, and intense.

New Year programs being offered this month at East Anaheim,

Canyon, Euclid, and Haskett branches.
