COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help students understand basic concepts in chemistry. These concepts can be used as a foundation for success in college sciences and more advanced high school science courses.

MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course, each student will be able to:

• Relate topics in chemistry to their everyday life observations.

• Apply knowledge in chemistry topics to problems.

• Write a lab report.

• Demonstrate knowledge of current topics in science.

TOPICS COVERED:

• Unit One: Matter, Energy, and Atomic Structure

• Unit Two: Chemical Properties and Bonding

• Unit Three: Chemical Reactions and Quantitative Chemistry

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

• Three ring binder (at least 1.5 inch)

• Five dividers

• Bound composition book

• Pencil, pen, paper

• Scientific calculator

PROJECTS

• Informative Reports and Posters

• Internet Activities

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• Bring all necessary materials to class each day.

• Complete assignments on time with your best effort.

• Keep your chemistry textbook covered at all times.

• Review each night for at least twenty minutes.

• Ask me for help if you are confused.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

• Be seated and working on the warmup when the bell rings.

• Transition efficiently between activities.

• Maintain a respectful environment.

• Engage in sustained silent reading at specified times.

• Be on task until at least two minutes before the end of class.

• Absences from class while the student is in school must be approved by Mrs. Moore.

CLASSROOM RULES:

• Follow all policies listed in the Student Handbook and retain this handbook as your hallway pass.

• Respect yourself, your teachers, and your classmates.

• Follow all safety protocols.

• Maintain your integrity.

• Be kind and positive.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE:

Mrs. Moore reserves the right to use any combination of the following when a student breaks a classroom rule or procedure.

• Eye contact

• Proximity

• Verbal warning

• Detention

• Additional assignments

• Office referral

• Conference

HOMEWORK POLICY:

Homework will be assigned each day. Assignments will be checked periodically throughout the semester. Certain assignments are randomly collected and graded while others are checked for completion. Late work will NOT be accepted. Extra credit assignments may be offered at the discretion of the teacher.

• Participation grades are given weekly for following classroom rules. The grade will be lowered for the following misbehaviors at Mrs. Moore’s discretion.

1. Failure to complete warmup or wrapup.

2. Failure to complete classwork or homework.

3. Breaking classroom rules.

4. Failure to be an active participant in class.

5. Unexcused absences or tardies.

• Tests will be announced at least two days in advance. Quizzes may not be announced.

• Parents and students may check the status of their student’s grade online. Both parents and students should be aware that assignments will be graded as soon as possible. Your patience is appreciated.

• A class website is available and can be accessed through the Polytech main website.

• Mrs. Moore will be glad to help you with science or answer questions about grades. Please see or email Mrs. Moore to arrange a time to discuss.

MAKEUP WORK POLICY:

When you are absent, you should check the makeup folder for makeup work at the beginning of class when you return (or before), turn in any collected work, and have Mrs. Moore check any participation work. You must then fill out a makeup work form and hand it to Mrs. Moore for any handouts you see you are missing before the class goes over the warmup. If you fail to get the handouts at this time on the day of your return, you cannot get the handouts until the end of class. Your makeup work is due the number of days you were absent from the day of your return. Late work will result in a zero for each of the missed assignments. The only exception to this rule is work in the lab which must be made up a week from the date of absence. Labs, quizzes, and tests must be made up at a time arranged with Mrs. Moore and the agreed upon time must be written on the calendar.

INTERNET USAGE POLICY:

Internet use in the classroom must following the same protocol as listed in the Polytech Handbook. Students must also follow Mrs. Moore’s Acceptable Use Policy in order to use the computers. Failure to follow this policy will result in an office referral and a grade of zero on the assignment. If parents/guardians do not wish for their sons/daughters to use this technology, they must notify Mrs. Moore in writing when this syllabus is returned signed.
