Participation in Government “Current Events” Homework

Participation in Government

“Current Events” Homework

Every Friday throughout the semester, there will be a “current events” homework due. These homework assignments are designed to keep students

up-to-date about governmental issues that are occurring on the federal, state, and local levels. Some of the events that you write about may be discussed in class.

Where do I find articles? Your best bet of finding articles about federal, state, and local governmental issues will be Newsday, however, you may also use other reliable sources. For example, The Long Island Advance, will have many articles about local government issues. You may also use web sites for these various papers. Please be sure that you are using legitimate news sources. Articles should be no older than two weeks.

What is expected of my article summary? Each week, you will be required to summarize an article on any level of government (federal, state, or local) for your summary. Articles summaries should be a minimum of two paragraphs. The first paragraph should be a basic summary of the article. Focus on: who, what, why, when, and where. Is it a federal, state, or local governmental issue? The second paragraph should give your reaction to the article. Do you think this is an important issue? Why? Do you agree or disagree with whatever the issue is? Why or why not?

What do I have to hand in? When you hand your articles in on Friday, you MUST attach the article with your summary. Summaries not accompanied by an article will not be accepted. Please write the name of the article, author, and date published on the article summary. Article summaries will not be accepted late.

If you have any questions about the current events homework, please do not hesitate to ask.
