CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENT

Generally every other Friday (at least once a month)…

Goals:

• To improve research skills

• To improve reading comprehension of journalistic/media writing

• To develop a personal engagement with local, national and world events

• To discover how government and politics affect society, culture, economics and foreign relations

• To improve discussion skills (analysis, debate, listening)

Topic

Assigned by the teacher – i.e. same topic for the whole class

OR

Student choice – i.e. each student will have a different topic

Requirements

1. The Assignment -- Students will bring to class a newspaper or magazine article stapled to a one-page typed write-up that includes:

▪ Summary of the information and ideas

• Background: who, what, where, when, why

• The issues, the concerns, the problems, the proposed solutions

▪ Personal opinion and reasons

▪ Questions for stimulating discussion

2. Current Events Day -- Class time on the Current Events day will include

▪ Small group discussion

• Present your article

• Use questions to stimulate discussion

▪ Full class discussion

• Be prepared to share what you learned from your article

• Be prepared to offer a comment on how your article connects to your classmates’ articles or to what we’re studying in class

• Be prepared to discuss how the content of your article affects you personally or citizens in general

▪ Written reflection

• How do these current events topics connect to what we have been learning about government and politics?

• What are you now curious to find out?

• What opinions have you developed

1. The article (5 pts )

2. The article assignment (15 pts)
